DAVE Smith has quit after a tumultuous three years as the boss of the National Rugby League.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal he is scheduled to inform staff at League Central headquarters and the game’s key stake holders at 10am today that he would be stepping down from the chief executive officer’s role.

NRL chairman John Grant will take over Smith’s responsibilities as interim CEO.

The independent commission will undertake a world wide recruitment search to identify a new leader before the start of next season.

another one bites the dust.
Robbie Farah has a business degree, have a go.

John Grant as interim….whaaaaaaaaaat....He sell the rest of the game to Fox for fiddycent....

I don't think a worldwide search is really necessary??

Smith didn't understand the game or our culture and it hurt him tbh. I'm also not sure whether a foreigner could understand why so many of the current rugby league community are so keen to hold the game back / want the new money but keep old standards.

He needed to go but Greenberg is an even bigger must. Has been a disaster.

What does a new CEO need to change?
For mine: scrap this 'bunker' nonsense

Get the judiciary in order; set precedents and stick to them

Make the video ref less complicated and have microphone announced explanations of their decisions, the same as the NFL. On tv you get feedback, but not live at the game

Rule changes minimised, done well in advance of the season and NEVER during

Implement a trade system of players. They are getting paid more than enough now to suck it up if they get traded and they keep harping on about "football is a short career", so being moved unwillingly will only be for a short time.

Establish decent media coverage of the game. TV commentary and journalism is pathetic and caters to the lowest end of the spectrum.

NRL chief executive Dave Smith quits
10:24 AEST Tue Oct 20 2015

Dave Smith has quit as NRL chief executive, ending a tumultuous three-year reign. Smith said on Tuesday he would leave the job on November 30\. ARLC Commission chairman John Grant takes over as interim CEO.

Smith has been a polarising figure in rugby league since taking over from longtime CEO David Gallop ahead of the 2013 season. As a former banker he has been credited with improving rugby league's finances. However, he was constantly at odds with the clubs over the direction the game was taking and how the NRL's revenue was divided up.

Smith's exit was also being linked to a breakdown in negotiations over the NRL's lucrative broadcast rights. In August, Smith came under fire for his handling of broadcast negotiations when he signed a new free-to-air TV deal with Channel Nine before an agreement was reached over the pay-TV rights.
He trumpeted a $925 million five-year free-to-air-broadcast deal with Channel Nine for seasons 2018-2022 that increased the game's presence on the network to five games a week. However, that deal was soon shadowed by the AFL's reported $1.3-billion deal with its free-to-air and Pay TV broadcast partners as News Corp chairman Rupert Murdoch showed his displeasure about Fox Sports being sidelined by the NRL's deal with Nine.

Smith had declared one of his major aims in office was to conclude dealings on the new TV broadcast arrangement, something he will no longer have the opportunity to do, with the pay TV and digital rights for seasons 2018-2022 still to be negotiated to a conclusion.

Wales-born Smith was also criticised for his lack of accessibility to the media. He will perhaps best be remembered by league fans for bringing in the `one punch and you are off' edict following an incident between Paul Gallen and Nate Myles during State of Origin in 2013\. It was a ruling aimed at making the game more family friendly and eliminated the biff from rugby league overnight.

A 'worldwide search' for a replacement is a complete waste of time…..it is that same exact process that landed us Smith the flaccid peckerhead in the first place. John Grant will be even more useless in the role. It is a shame that someone like Sterlo would never get the chance to run the game, with the right people beside him he has the knowledge of rugby league both on and off the field that would ensure the greatest game of all really was just that. Can't wait to see what silver spoon-fed mummy's boy the NRL chooses as Smith's replacement but you can be sure that they will choose a pathetic one, RL seems to never have it any other way. Hell, they will probably run with Matty Johns as our leader, nothing would surprise me TBH. Good riddance to Dave Smith the blithering tool.

Gould

Yeah Gould would do a pretty good job but I don't think he would want the stress. Plus Rabbs would want in as well….....
The easiest thing for the NRL to do would be to officially hand over the running of the game to the Roosters, after all they have unofficially been running the game for the last 15 or so years. They wouldn't even have to change the name.... NRL = New Roosters League. The Rorters could still operate outside the salary cap while most other teams abide by it, the Rorters could still play outside the rules without recriminations ie Kane Evans merrily shoulder-charging his way through the season without punishment. The Rorters could get to handpick their opponents when it comes time to plan the draw every season. Only sticking point would be that the Broncos would still have the monopoly of every single Friday night game of the season. Easy.
