Dave Smith Quits as NRL CEO

lol… one of your best.

Ribot was still CEO of the Broncos when Quail & Arko started the war.

I love Fried Rice with Tiger Sausage

Agree with Watto. The CEO doesn't need a working knowledge of the game, they won't be invested in the day to day football operations as that's what the likes of Greenturd & Richardson are employed to do.

The CEO needs to oversee the growth of the game and the capital it brings in. You don't need a Quayle, Arko or Greenberg for that to happen. Every CEO of the companies I've worked for in the past have had no fundamental understanding whatsoever of how a refrigeration system works, but they were still able to get the businesses to remain financial and expand their market share.

Plotting behind the scenes no doubt…or did they just wake up one day and go ooooooh....I got an idea...

Ribot doesn't get off scot free in my estimation - he was one of the instigators.

Quayle and Arko were the good guys from my memory of events.

Then again it depends if you were a SL fan I guess.

I think its fair to say that the head honcho deals with a lot more complex issues than that though CB, the past few years being a pretty good example of this. He has to have the stomach for it (which needs plenty of genuine passion and love for the game itself), that is part of the reason why vanilla-spewing white collar types that we have had running the game recently don't last too long in the job.
Smith will enjoy it more twiddling his thumbs driving a desk for some company that doesn't have the trials and tribulations of the NRL top job.

I understand your point FTB, but I don't agree. In the NRL it's the trials and tribulations of player behaviour, in Smith's native banking industry it's complete collapse of the financial system which affects far more people on a whole host of levels, I would argue that the NRL is a far easier job when it comes to workplace risks. As I said, there are people employed in specific football operations roles who would have far more significant dealings with the clubs and game itself while the CEO is an administrative figurehead.

Im one of the few that actually liked David Smith.

Rugby league is a boys club and very insular. They like to believe that the way things are done are better than others and so forth.

David Smith approached the NRL like a business, this had some short comings, but I think he did a lot of good in securing some financial security for the game. Convincing the Government to chuck a heap of cash at the Stadia project being a good example.

I know he is copping some flak over the NRL TV deal, but until the AFL did their's we thought it was amazing. Like or not, the AFL is going to get more for their deal than us because they can sell adds in 6 markets, and AFL fans watch more related programing than league fans. The AFL shows on fox rate enough that they are of value. The league programs dont rate as highly.

I didn't mind Smith either for the reasons you listed as well Goose.

AFL fans have an entire channel dedicated to the game so there is a broader range of related programming. The league programmes on Fox don't rate because the Matty Johns show is another TFS type League themed entertainment show. If they did a show where they talked tactics and in depth analysis it would be a much bigger success IMO. A 90 minute show where it's 5 mins of football and 85 mins of former players backslapping, inside jokes and carrying on like peanuts is not a good formula. The only reason why TFS has survived is because FTA is starved of any Rugby League related programming and the casual fans consider that to be better than nothing.

Agree with all of this.

Sterlo started of as a combination of Open Mike and a 360 style show, but went down the footy show route a little.
NRL 360 is a decent show. I think they could do better with it all, but havent yet.

The AFL have a number of shows that rate terrifically, Open Mike is an outstanding show, I dont event know the guys on their most weeks and enjoy it, AFL 360, before the bounce and all those shows have a much better formula and of course rate much better.

The league could do that if they employed the right guys. Deep thinkers like Matt Elliot and Danial Anderson could partner with a Tony Squires type and put on an excellent show. There are a few good league journos that could put on a decent show
