David Nofoaluma #164

Many still discounting the value of an outstanding winger such as JAC or Tuiaki just need to look at the highlights posted of TT, for example, to see how they can make something out of nothing and turn a game on its head. It’s an awesome trick to have as a team trying to play finals footy!

Time to move on from Nofa. He hasn't re-signed and the writing is on the wall.

In late November his manager made it known that he wanted more coin because it was (apparently) his last chance for a contract.

Which is rubbish, he's 27 and he has at least 2 NRL contracts left + an opportunity to play ESL at the back end of his career.

Since then all we've heard is dead air.

His managers attempt to lift his price was PR jargon and we were right to offer him what he's worth
- max $450-500K.

In my opinion that's even too much. One decent year versus five average years doesn't make you a quality top 5 NRL winger.

Nofa and his manager are playing games and we should stick to our guns and promote AJ /Talau or even Momo to the right wing if he decides to defect and sign up with the Eels or Bunnies.

Sorry for being ignorant, but when was that one good year again?

He won the Dally M winger last year, which I can't deny, however he hasn't proven to be a consistent strike winger across his entire career.

If he decides to leave us I feel confident we have the talent to fill his position.

Leck, I’m slowly losing faith in the value of awards as a means of evaluating performance. I guess I saw more of Nofa than I did of other wingers, but I don’t think that’s how he got the award is it? Didn’t he get the award because the DallyM judges gave him points compared to WT players performance? Our team performance was regrettable but Nofa’s highlight reel was a tribute to his skill and that of other players around him. A good winger competes for the high ball. Rowdy did a better job of that than Nofa. A good winger scores tries, which he did, 17 of them, but he let in 23, making him the worst defensive winger in the nrl . Jennings was so much better defensively than Nofa.
The DallM winger award carried no weight with Blues selectors.

I completely agree with you and in my opinion our Dally M points system is flawed.

It's solely based on a panel of three judges who can be biased at times.

I'd like to see it based upon a points system which collates data for both the front and back row.

For example -

**Primary Score**

**Most meters gained:** 1 point
**Most offloads:** 1 point
**Most line breaks:** 1 point
**Most line break assists:** 1 point
**Most tackles made:** 1 point
**Most kicks and effective meters gained:** 1 point
**Most missed tackles:** -1 point
**Most errors made:** -1 point
**Most penalties conceded:** -1 point
**Try scored:** 2 points

**Judges Score** (3 X judges allocate these points)

**Plays that change the game** (e.g. an outstanding attacking or defensive play, a kick from the sideline or a last second field goal to win the game): 2 points
**Overall player of the game:** 2 points

Whilst this might sound complicated we live in 2021 and can easily create algorithms which produce instant in-game data.

A system like this would ensure the Dally M was based on facts rather than just the opinions of judges.

In terms of Nofa, I think he should have made the NSW squad even if only on the bench, but I also think his defense was probably a liability that Freddy didn't want to take a punt on.

If the NRL produced weekly in-game Dally M data, who knows maybe the winners and our NSW squad would have looked different and won.

That SuperCoach point scoring is really no more efficient. In fact any individual accolades or selections will never be perfect in a team sport, because a great team makes individuals shine.

I'm not sure about that, I think we can refine it and make it much more fan friendly + interactive.

Imagine seeing each player judged live and in-game (+1 or -1 per player per criteria) judged by you?

You decide via a live app, the NRL collates your votes, and then 3 x NRL judges have the final 30% vote.

For me , it's a win/win and no-brainier for fans, the NRL and how we judge the Dally M in years to come.

Sounds better than being judged by judges who don't even watch the game.

Exclusive: South Sydney target Tigers star David Nofoaluma as Corey Allan joins Bulldogs

The Wests Tigers face a fresh fight to retain Dally M winger of the year David Nofoaluma with the South Sydney Rabbitohs poised to make a play to sign the robust speedster for 2022.

Nofoaluma had a breakout 2020 season for the Tigers, scoring 17 tries in 20 NRL matches and collecting the club’s best and fairest Kelly-Barnes Award award.

With Corey Allan switching from South Sydney to Canterbury-Bankstown effective immediately as of Monday, the Bunnies are now eyeing off making a play to lure the Wests Tigers winger for next season.

Queensland State of Origin debutant Allan trained with the Bulldogs on Monday after agreeing to a three-year deal to play under Trent Barrett at Canterbury-Bankstown.

Nofoaluma enjoyed his most consistent season in the NRL last year with Fox Sports Lab numbers confirming the Dally M winger of the year made 112 tackle busts, 19 line breaks and seven try-assists.

His 112 tackle busts ranked 4th in the NRL and the seven try-assists were equal first with NSW Origin flyer Josh Addo-Carr for most try assists from a winger.

Wests Tigers chairman Lee Hagipanetlis enjoys an extremely tight bond with Nofoaluma and is adamant the Tigers will do everything within reason to ensure the local junior remains at Concord.

“I had dinner with David last night where I reaffirmed the club’s commitment about how we want him to be at the Wests Tigers for life,” Hagipantelis said.

“We absolutely want David to be a one club player and he’s told the club this is also his preference.”

The sticking point for Wests Tigers is the length of Nofoaluma’s new contract. The club wants to sign the 27-year-old to a three-year deal until the end of 2024.

But Nofoaluma’s agent Sam Ayoub is pushing for a four-year deal.

The off-contract Tigers winger has been repeatedly linked with a move to the Parramatta Eels to replace Blake Ferguson at the end of this year but this has been strongly refuted.

Both South Sydney and Wests Tigers have also been linked with Panthers grand final winger Josh Mansour.

Mansour has been told by the Panthers he is free to leave to join a rival NRL club.

The Rabbitohs confirmed Allan’s release from the remainder of his contract on Monday.

“His preferred position, and his best position, is fullback and the opportunity to play in that position on a regular basis is not there with us.” Head of football Mark Ellison said in a statement.

“He feels he will have a better opportunity to play fullback at his new club, on an extended and improved deal than that which he had with us,”

“We felt it would be unfair to stand in the way of Corey progressing his career somewhere else, he will always be a Rabbitoh, and we wish him and his partner Teigan all the best for the future. “

The main takeaway from this article is the fact it sounds like Nofa wants to stay and the club wants him, but it’s down to the length of his contract. To be fair, if he got a 4 year deal (on presumably good money) he would be 32-33 by the final year of his deal which isn’t ideal for the club, so can understand them only wanting 3 years.

I don’t think Allan leaving means they’ll chase Nofa either. He was their backup fullback more than a winger, and they didn’t chase JAC earlier who’s a better winger and probably a similar price, so I don’t see how they’ll suddenly want Nofa now unless they’ve decided not to stick with Jaxson Paulo.

Not a chance in hell you'd give Nof a 4 year deal on 500k. 3 year deal max. No increases whatsoever. 3 years at 450k is the absolute highest we should possibly offer.

We have to learn our lesson from being played by managers in the past.

I hope so. If we offered 4 years it would be a big mistake.

Only an 'average' club would be pandering to a non rep / never played finals / no D player like Nofa.

He wants four years? On rep level pay.

WALK AWAY...now.

I wouldn't say we all hate him, I don't mind him however I understand why others don't.

I agree with the club on 3 years max. With the salary cap concession we should hold out other clubs advances unless he really wants to go which it sounds like he doesn't.

It's about the dollars. Nofa wants to get paid.

So the question is - What is Nofa realistically worth to our or another club?

How do you know ? I’d prefer a little less for 4 years if I knew I was a winger , and it’s definitely a young mans position. Especially when you see how 31 year olds are treated in the nrl . Sauce is exhibit A for this .

It's not about about the terms of the contract, or even the years.

It's about the dollars. Nofa wants to get paid.

So the question is - What is Nofa realistically worth to our or another club?

Realistically, I think he’s a $350k player.

✅ See ya

How do you know ? I’d prefer a little less for 4 years if I knew I was a winger , and it’s definitely a young mans position. Especially when you see how 31 year olds are treated in the nrl . Sauce is exhibit A for this .

Wingers are about speed more then most positions, and they get slower as they get older.Fergo slowed down noticibly last year,i think no one in this position should be signed past their 30th birthday.

Not a chance in hell you'd give Nof a 4 year deal on 500k. 3 year deal max. No increases whatsoever. 3 years at 450k is the absolute highest we should possibly offer.

We have to learn our lesson from being played by managers in the past.

Great post BB. It is ironic Mansour is mentioned in the article. If we sign Nofoaluma for 4 years, it will be Mansour Mk2 but our problem, not the Panthers.

His management and PR team have been pretty clear.

He wants more money based on being the 2020 Dally M winger of the year whilst he rolls into a potentially lucrative contract in 2022.

WTs offered him a new contract in late November, but we haven't heard anything since.

I'm going to make a calculated guess that we offered him $500k but he wants more.

Pretty sure we'll all know Nofa's decision by the end of the month.
