'**Millions** of migrants'?

Demonstrably false.

From subsequent remarks (ie 'flood our country with migrants') you are clearly a shameless racist.

100% correct. As an Australian I'd like to see the levels of immigration increase significantly. Without checking the facts I am sure we've had minimal immigration over the course of the pandemic.

Immigration has helped this country significantly and I expect it will continue to do so in the future.

I am also 100% behind the Djokovic decisions. It's a privilege to come into our country and it should be seen as such.

Agreed on all counts.

There has been basically zero immigration during the pandemic. Many industries are now facing a skills shortage due to the lack of workers (whether skilled or otherwise).

Given the very bumpy 'return to normal' (how good has 'letting it rip' been?) this will take quite some time to turn around.

As far as the Djoker goes no doubt it was handled badly. A simple 'No, Novak, **really**: they are serious about vaccination requirements for visas, we can't do anything to sidestep this' would've gone a long way.

People within Tennis Australia need to resign.

You'd have to be either racist or extremely stupid to think we need to be tough on immigration now.

It's interesting that we are letting it rip and it is in some ways very similar to a lockdown. People are scared. I haven't been to the gym since prior to Christmas. I had a tiny cold and was tested but I didn't want to see mum and dad (both high risk) if I had COVID over Christmas. I haven't been back to the gym yet. I think I'll go tomorrow but my wife will freak out.

I'm an optimist and I think we are doing the right thing and that this will get better soon but never trust an optimist.

'Skills shortage' is basically Busines Council of Australia code for WE NEED MOAR APARTMENTS, and we don't want to fund TAFE or improve wages to encourage local workers. I have no issue with migration but I do have an issue with politicians using it as a lazy way to grow GDP while not growing GDP per capita, and business lobby groups encouraging it for cynical reasons.

elaborate please?
how would funding TAFE helping with unskilled labour shortage? It's not just migrants, it's also international students which formed a big part of the workforce.

As for improving wages, I can first hand guarantee you couldn't be more wrong. Small busineeses are paying almost 1.5x for the same physical labour than pre-COVID. Ask your local fruitshop or Asian grocer or anyone in the manufacturing/distribution industry.

At the moment as part of my job I am helping at a Federal level to get the minister to promote funding to help TAFE in WA so we can help The Afghan cohort of LEEs who helped the ADF and are skilled in truck driving to fill the gap with the skills shortage of truck drivers around the nation. The problem is TAFE are charging a lot for non PR/ citizens…just an example

My previous role was at TAFe, and tafe needs more funding for more courses to upskill people, better facilities, computers, digitise. Support our teachers, who are mostly all casuals, Everything at Ultimo for example is archaic

Hey there 'pal' - so no citation for the 'millions of migrants over the last few years' statistic?

Or the 'dreamlliners to flood our country with migrants on the 15th' remark?

Curious - What percentage were 'migrants' when compared to permanent residents or Australian citizens?

What caused you to use such language as '**flood our country with migrants**'? Gotta say I am struggling to find a non-racist inference when this term is used.

Re TAFE - I'm talking skilled, not unskilled. The corporate lobby groups and neoliberal ideologues who pull the strings of government would much rather import people than fund proper industry training. For the lobby groups they get the benefit of MOAR apartments, MOAR consumers! For the politicians, they get the benefit of artificial GDP growth, from which they can claim they are 'good economic managers.'

Wages are rising worldwide due to QE. This is a good thing.

As for small business, I am a small business owner and saying I can't get staff is a euphemism for I want lower wages or in this environment with Covid better to say I can't get staff than to say I can't get customers which is the real issue are people as scared witless.

And I repeat again I want less migration going forward. Many surveys done recently show over 70% of Australians favor lower immigration levels going forward than what has taken place over the 20 years pre pandemic. With students and visa holders migration was over 5 million, way too high a number. I don't want Sydney and Melbourne's skyline taken over by apartments and whole suburbs churned over in a short space of time which changes permanently the character of everything without giving the new people a chance to assimilate and enjoy a standard of living we expected for ourselves. We both loose and in the meantime you feel like a stranger in you own suburb.

As someone who's parents are migrants and who's current girlfriend is a migrant I stand by my views that I wish Australia to resemble the country I knew..

Yes and the skills shortages in the heavy vehicle industry also relates to people not being able to train and be tested because of COVID. It's worldwide.

On top of that a high percentage are isolating so migrating drivers for example will lead to an oversupply later.

I don't think it's so simple. I worked for years for a big bank in big databases. We've never been able to get skilled resources solely from Australia. This is the same even within the big consulting companies.

I'll add the pay to me is ridiculously high. I was a manager and a full time employee and I was well paid but I had contractors in my team earning up to $1000 per day.

We need migrant labour.

Haven't though about it before. However, driver shortages have been going on for years before COVID even. Unskilled labour shortages (factory line workers, cleaners, pick and packers etc) has been going on for years and it will continue. If it isn't fulfilled, the bigger corporations will move elsewhere.

You are under the impression that bringing migrants will decrease the socioeconomic status of your area, when in fact I feel all it will lead to is false hyperinflation and then a massive crash (that I feel we may see with the housing market soon)

Wasn't thinking of the socio economic status of the area. But look Australia into the 70s from the end of WW2 had a policy of providing a job for whoever wanted one and a unemployment rate of sub 2% as a target. Therer was industry and wage indexation which is not existent now. Locals don't want a low paying job on black money which dosent enable them to ever own anything. That's why it is said "we" don't want these jobs because for more than a decade due to high rates of migration wages have barely moved while houses have more than doubled.
The migrants you see working in cafes for example and boy they are unskilled tell me they generally get $16 an hour. 20 years ago it was $12. All black no super ,cover or anything.

So when we hear of skills shortages what they mean is that they wished for undocumented scab labour sadly.

Trust me skill shortages are a myth.
