Do we need more officials controlling NRL games?

There's an article in the SMH that states Tony Archer will use the Charity Shield Game as a trial to use 10 officials to control the game.
If successful, it will be used as early as round one

2 referees
4 sideline officials
2 in-goal touch judges
2 video referees
It might be a good thing, or it might create more problems. ( to many cooks spoil the broth) kind of thing.
What is your opinion on this ?

I like the idea of in goal touchies but I think we need to only have 1 main ref, having 2 isn't working.

Also, why 4 touchies?

In the old days,we had,
1 ref
2 sideline officials..
Many games were won and lost on their decisions, having the video ref stopped the uncertainty of a try or no try to an extent,it's a modern game now and technology has to play its part..

More than these will kill the game off with a lot of stop start play..

This is just my opinion and I'm no expert, but rugby league should be a free flowing game for 80 mins,no need to constantly stop play to check on something trivial and turn it into a 100 mins plus game…we will end up with more officialdom than players....

I'd be happier to see the game return to 1 referee in the middle. The fact of the matter is we're flat out getting 8 referees that are up to NRL standard, let alone 16.

2 touch judges on each side of the field. Two will mark the 10 metre
to assist referee.
The other two will help monitor forward passes.

If it means less video then they can have 100 refs for all i care.

I wanna watcha try…...and enjoy it...not wait five minutes while we go back and forth looking for a fingernail touch or the like.

I agree with Fraze23, to go with that the 2 referees causes a lot more penalties due inconsistencies between the 2 with each having an interpretation of a rule, experience, know how etc.

I like the 4 touchies idea, that to go with 1 Main Ref and only use the video referee when a decision can't be made in the middle.

no maybe in touch official , sack one of the refs back to 1 this nrl is being run by d******ds what a difference the commission was going to make that's a joke .keep it up and soccer and afl will run over us . all they are interested in is the mighty dollar b***er the fans .

I agree , how good was it having only one ref in the 4 nations !
By the sounds of it it'll get worse before the knobs in charge realise they've completely stuffed our game .
David Gallop must me sitting back in his chair laughing his ass off !

Agreed. Hopefully the in goal judges will be able to help the immediate decision and limit those that are reviewed.

Initial thoughts is that this is one of the dumbest things i've heard in a long long time!

However - it is an actual attempt to fix the two things that annoy me the most about rugby league officiating:
- video ref - just get rid of it
- continual forward passes out of dummy half mean that forwards running one pass off the ruck are already passed the markers when they get the ball. Extra touchies specifically tasked with watching for forward passes could make that boring, annoying one pass barge off the ruck a lot less effective.

Archer also mentioned that the NRL will experiment further, with the All Stars match that will see the in-goal-touch judges remain, but there will be a return to two sideline officials.
Other trials will involve 4 touch judges but no in-goal touch judges as he searches for the best system. :unamused:
I will be watching with interest to see how it all pans out!

Tigermama,I think hes heading for a major headache…but as you say if it works out to be a good system then fair enough...

Good God no! The ones we have now can't even get it right. I think the history of the game has shown that the more officials we have, the more mistakes there are made.
