Drugs, sex, domestic violence: football’s cover-up

16 clubs, 30 FG at each gives you 480 young, somewhat cashed up and time rich kids, pretty lethal mix.

Add to this, and I mean it in the best possible way as I love league, the players GENERALLY are not the smartest tools in the shed and given the working class game we support, is likely to come from a low / middleclass family and had some hardships in their younger years.

My point, if you grab that snap shot of society with that demographic, you will get scumbags. I'm sure we can all recall blokes that aren't footy players that have done the same thing. It sucks, but its part of our society unfortunately. The NRL covering up is just protecting their business like any billion dollar organization would. Again, this sucks but its part of a bigger issue.

People saying they are ashamed to wear a jersey? that's crazy, support the team, the game. The players should be ashamed, not the fans. I promise you, a tiger has never, ever been drunk in a gutter outside a brothel...Magpie on the other hand

It's the hypocrisy that gets to me. They dedicate a whole round to Women in League, though then simultaneously turn a blind eye to and encourage domestic violence. They ban players for drug use, though that's only if the proof goes public, whilst they then simultaneously cover up other players drug use, even making one of those players an Immortal. They ban players for match fixing, yet have gambling companies as big sponsors of the game.

I don't know if or how V'landys can fix this. Or if he even wants to fix this. Maybe it goes too deep.

The trouble with a lot of these players is that they have an unbelievable skill set and talent, therefore because the NRL is a huge business with huge monetary turnover and profit within the clubs and NRL itself, young players are recruited at a very young age, some targeted while at school...
This leads to them becoming in a sense "entitled"because they are or can be a draw card for the game..
The problem I see year in and year out is that they are given everything at their disposal and they dont have to work the way others before them had to eg,back in the eighties and early nineties most big name players had jobs as well as playing footy, nowadays the NRL is their job and with big,big money on offer the world seems to have no bounds for them because they are elite NRL players void of rules imposed on the ordinary folks of the community....
when your young and dont have to work per say as the rest of us to put food on the table or pay bills ,then you live in a sense of entitlement ,when a problem arises for them they have the club send out the troops to cover any illegality to help them maintain their elite status...
When the NRL finally come to see the faults within their great commodity and put in place higher penalties or programmes to help these players in a legal and professional manner then this behaviour will continue...the NRL must look at itself and then look at the cause and core of the major problems within the industry...not an easy task, but as has been said before many, many times .....
"Live by the sword, die by the sword"...

Just watched the 4 Corner story on Tinder dating .....it definitely isn't just footballers ...firefighters ...legal types ....

If you can watch it ...do so .....my daughter goes near Tinder ......rrrrrrrrr

Some absolute brilliant posts on here. Thank you for everyone's intelligent and well articulated views. I agree the problem is to entrenched to be able to be fixed. Young men with too much time and money on their hands spells trouble. Yes story about Tinder last night was scarry and a real eye opener. I have pre teen twins so very concerned about apps like this.

Its nothing new been going on since I have been following the game and that’s over 50 years. Clubs have been paying hush money and sweeping their dirt under the carport since day one and you would imagine HQ Had full knowledge.

In recent years the NRL created the integrity commission in order to be seen as doing the right thing, but in actual fact it was created for brand name protection and damage control. Maybe I am cynical but the integrity commission is like have the police head up the royal commission into police corruption. One shudder to think what might have happened under the previous regime at HQ. Anyway PV has to go hard at anyone that has done the wrong thing and any club. Although my gut feeling their will be the token fall guy and the rest will stay under the rug in order to protect the bottom line

Everyone knows PV is from Racing right?

To continue your analogy, that would be like appointing the Police to run the Royal Commission but the police being run by a previous employee of the mob

In the 80's and knew a few 1st grade footballers through a close mate of mine i grew up with an was invited to a party to catch up with him. Most of them were OK just liked to drink to excess, few had tickets on themselves that thought every girl would be thier conquest because they were footballers.
My mate's GF was away that weekend and the amount of women hitting on him at that party was an eye opener, there were 2 girls that stated at the bar that they were going to take him home that night and have turns.

I assume most guys were relish the opportunity, however he declined because he had moral principals.

Things have changed now, alot my drug use (Only really weed back then) and society has also changed with there preferences.

Not all footballers are bad there is also the temptation that comes with the profession, but i strongly don't agree with clubs covering up the facts like Sam Burgess.

See its all gone quiet now after the original story.

I'm waiting for more to come out about this. More as in the NRL actually addressing it. Allowing Souths to just say it didn't happen isn't anywhere near good enough.

Continued silence will just show us that V'landys has changed nothing. I'm being patient, but so far am very disappointed, as I thought this could be that monumental game-changing moment when things would actually be addressed, changed and could improve.

So far, it isn't. Just more of the old carpet sweeping.

Are they allowed time to investigate without splashing it all over the papers?

I couldnt agree more, if mudochs filth where splashing it all over their headlines it would probably mean Turdberg was still running the show.To use an old adage "No news is good news" (pun intended)

Yeah fair enough I suppose, I am being a bit impatient. I'm hanging for some good news to come out of the footy, be it Wests Tigers, NRL admin, something.

I wouldn't consider it good news, I'd prefer it didn't happen.

I'd prefer that too. So if it is happening, and I suspect it is, then hopefully some light on it will prevent it happening in the future. Can't change the past. If you could, I'd do what I've often dreamt about and give Chicka Ferguson food poisoning the night before that game in 89.

Do you remember the old beer ad with the 89 GF and some guy drinking beer dreaming of running on and getting the ball instead of Benny and running the ball and scoring to win the GF? lol, I hated that ad back in the day.
