Wests Tigers' Elijah Taylor credits gruelling Penrith Panthers pre-season as key for fitness improvement

Adam Pengilly

If Elijah Taylor comes back to bite the Panthers' finals aspirations with a crucial play at the death on Friday night, Penrith will only have themselves to blame.

Taylor will look around Pepper Stadium and think of sweltering summer days where, in black training kit no less, he slogged it out during pre-season.

All in the hope that when the season was on the line he would come up with a moment others couldn't.

"It was torture," Taylor smiled. "We just did time trials … so much running. It's really showing why Penrith is such a fit team because of all the work we did in the pre-season.

"Physically it was very demanding, [but] I feel good having that done this pre-season."

But probably not as good as Tigers coach Jason Taylor does about another team pouring a pre-season into his mid-year recruit – and then coming back to potentially haunt their finals aspirations.

As far as end-of-season games go they don't come much bigger than the Panthers (seventh) and Tigers (10th) clash. Penrith can all but seal a top eight spot with a win. The Tigers can draw level with their western Sydney neighbours with an upset.

Taylor, unceremoniously shown the door by Penrith coach Anthony Griffin during the year, has already beaten his old club once as a Tiger.

Beat them again and the joint venture will fancy breaking their finals drought with games against the Warriors (away) and Raiders (home) to come.

"There's probably no emotions as I've already played them, but it will be different warming up knowing that stadium so well during the pre-season," Taylor said.

The 26-year-old former New Zealand international remains unsigned beyond this season having agreed to head to Concord on a short-term deal.

The prospect of being at a third club in the space of six months is an unappealing one – particularly given Taylor's flourishing combination with returning halfback Luke Brooks and five-eighth Mitchell Moses.

"If I can it would be cool [to stay]," he said. "I've settled in really well with the boys here – it's a good crew and a young crew – and there's a good culture. I'm playing with some exciting players.

"I'm trying my best to stay here and get some stability. We've got heaps of young boys coming through and I just have to focus on playing some consistent and good footy.

"Some of the stuff [the halves] do at training … how do they do that? When you get up close and play with them you realise these players are elite players.

"These halves encourage me to get the ball, encourage me to hit them early, encourage me to hit them late. It gives me confidence because they're always confident. They've really helped my game grow and my confidence grow."

Obvious that he wants to stay, just have to come up with a competitive offer, here's hoping that he stays!!

I'm sure he'd have signed elsewhere by now if he was leaving. It's obvious he and the club are trying to work out a deal.

Not being critical but I'd like to see more from ET offensively tonight, I think he's our key but things just aren't working around him lately IMO.

I just hope he is not d/h when Deano takes a break

It will be Rankin.

I don't really like that idea, as we'll then be missing a fullback buzzing around supporting the halves through the middle - let alone acting as a 3rd playmaker when we're on the attack.
Wouldn't surprise me to see someone like Lovett pop in there.

Cohesion - replace a dh with a dh ,- or rearrange a team and play players out of position to fill the dh???? Win lose or draw still not buying it.

How about we do something crazy like, I don't know, play a recognised hooker at hooker?! I'm getting sick of all these position changes and they obviously are not working.
Pick a team with players playing where they are supposed to. Full stop.
Someone please get that through Jason Taylor's thick skull

Elijah Taylor had an impressive start to his wests tigers career, and whike his tackle count is high every week, it must be said he has been down right ordinary the past month. Has too many errors and misses in in him, lacks size, and at times is either lazy or not fit enough to do the exact job he is there to do, clean up.

We cant throw big money at this guy. I honestly think Siro could play his ball playing role and provide much more size.

Elijah Taylor looked gassed all night …
He's good for 30 mins , then he's useless .
To much overhype with this player .

He's still a key component for us going forward, but the hype around him has been ridiculous. The fact he came into the side just as we turned things around probably gave people an inflated belief that it was because of ET, when he was nothing more than a contributing factor.

Earlier in the year I posted the club's top 25 roster in an attempt to explain some of the more bizarre team selections. This squad was assembled by Jason Taylor prior to Mark O'Neill's arrival….

one thing in ur notes above worries me how was MILONE put in the top 25, was he not out for the season before drinkwater left the club, seems strange to me.

Torch, do you have any idea which of our juniors (other than those mentioned) we're likely to keep? Tatola, Suli, Marsters, Stone, Jacobs, Karwhin etc?

And in general, the decision to promote Milone ahead of JAC just baffles. Neither should have been on much money, if anything JAC perhaps on more due to his far higher potential. Milone was one well connected kid.

Here's all I know at present re the above:
Milone may retire due to a recurrent knee injury but at the very least will not be in the top 25 next year! Sponsorhip expires end of year …..
Ballin is considering his future, but the club is very keen to retain him in some capacity if indeed he can't play due to injury - he will cost us $200k next year / this year $80k.
Tatola has received an offer at the same time as Felise - still no word on what he will do, has received lukewarm interest from elsewhere.
Kharwin has shown poor attitude at training minimum $80k offer has been rejected by him, don't know what he will do. Lack of genuine pace an issue.
Marsters signed up for 2 yrs and highly and regarded - trying to increase his effective minutes.
Suli, Stone & Jacobs I don't have any reliable info, I happen to know one of them personally, but still don't have anything to share.
Contrary to what has been reported the club is still trying to negotiate a settlement with Melb to release JAC. To date this appears to be the only major blunder under Pascoe's reign and as I reported previously JAC signed with Melb while Pascoe was away on extended leave from work on private business, despite leaving instructions that he wanted the final say on JAC - apparently this was not properly communicated to JAC management. JAC desperately wants to stay and be in the top 25 squad next year but this appears to be a remote chance with Melb asking for $200k comp / JAC 's 3 year Melb deal is only worth $460k + incentives.
Cherrington's deal with Penrith was withdrawn in July which was the deadline imposed based on a likely decision re Farah saga - he will move on to Cronulla on a 1 year deal / Liddle now outperforming him in all kpis.
Its important to note that next year there could be as many as 6 vacant spots ( exits: Farah; Halatau; Cherrington; Hunt; Milone; possibly Sirro) in our top 25 roster - maybe the forum should try to pick who the newbies will be will be from our existing squads / I don't anticipate a huge intake of fresh talent.
Personal view only: Robbie Farah is a WT legend no iffs or buts, but his time has come. He no longer has any support in the areas that matter perhaps apart from 1 sponsor. I have no personal relationship with Robbie and despite all I know / don't know, I respect him for what he did for us on the field. I don't want to dwell on the fact that he now has probably killed off any prospect of a role with the WTs after he retires - there would be any number I roles that I thought he could have handled quite capably. Its a real shame but needs to be resolved and Pascoe will ensure this happens as equitably as possible. Please believe me when I say the club is in good shape, it bears no resemblance to the 'inmates running the asylum' of a few years ago. No pain, no gain with a clear, transparent and binding primary objectives semi finals 2017;2018;2019.
Final word on JT's contract, technically it is true that 2017 is an option in the club's favour, but in all likelihood he will be granted this 1 yr contract exemption based on successfully resolving 'transitional issues' ( management talk for getting rid of dead wood / bad habits) and getting the team to at least equal 8th notwithstanding our poor differential. Next year its very simple ideally top 4 with a $ bonus or top 8 to receive a 2 yr extension. Failure to reach top 8 will result in immediate termination.
I've now been told 3 different contract figures for Taylor but none of them have him earning any more than $450k p.a. on his current deal, which is $200k less than what Cleary is asking.

TT left the forum with a challenge to fill the six vacancies in the top twenty five next year. Who will they be'?

Elijah Taylor has refused to rule out leaving NRL for union if Tigers don’t table new deal
August 22, 20166:36pm

ELIJAH Taylor has refused to rule out leaving the NRL for rugby union if the Wests Tigers don’t offer him a new deal in the coming weeks.

Taylor has been a revelation at the Tigers since his mid-season switch from Penrith, but he remains a free agent beyond this season.

The New Zealand international has indicated a desire to stay with the joint-venture club, however he is yet to receive a formal offer.

This has opened the door for Taylor to revisit rugby as an option after he considered joining the 15-man code at the start of the season while he was languishing in reserve grade at Penrith.

“If it doesn’t work out here, then obviously I’ve got to go somewhere and rugby is something that has always interested me,” Taylor told The Daily Telegraph.

“I grew up playing it back in New Zealand, so we’ll see what happens here first and then I’ll worry about other things.”

Asked if he had spoken with any Super Rugby clubs, he replied: “I can’t really say.”

In the meantime, Taylor will wait for the Tigers to table a deal before making a decision on his future.

“Hopefully I hear from them soon because I’d like to stay here if I could,” he said.

“It’s something you want to get done, but we’ll see what happens.

“The Tigers are very keen for me to stay, so they are just organising all the paperwork and that stuff.

“It’s a great club, very young, very talented and promising, so it would be good to stay.

“But footy is footy and anything can happen.

“If you asked me last year if I was going to be at the Tigers, I would have said you’re crazy.”

There’s no doubting Taylor wants his future finalised, but he is equally determined to help Wests secure an unlikely finals berth.

On the back of last Friday’s forgettable 30-point loss to Penrith, the Tigers will need to win their remaining two matches against the Warriors and Canberra and hope other results go their way to qualify.

Despite this daunting task, Taylor says his side remain optimistic of defying the odds to play September football.

“We just have to win our games and focus on us,” he said.

“It was a big game out there at Pepper against Penrith last weekend, but defensively we weren’t good enough they put us to the sword.

“We can’t do that again.”

The Tigers’ first challenge will be taming the Warriors at Mt Smart Stadium on Sunday.

As a former Warrior, Taylor knows what his fellow countrymen are capable of — especially on home turf.

“I’m expecting a very tough game,” he said.

“They have to win as well to make the finals, so it’s going to be do or die.

“If we can play our best footy then we are a chance, but if we don’t it could be another loss like last Friday night (against Penrith).”
