OFFICIAL Esan Marsters [Discussion]

His kicking is okay. I wouldn't say im comfortable. Before he hit that one from out wide Sunday, had he kicked one from the touchline this season?

To me its a stop gap to the end of the year.

The more game time kicking he gets the better he’ll get. But we may need someone else kicking when he’s playing 50-60 minutes in the pack next season. Mbye can be that guy, but he’ll need practice over the off season for mine.

Well if Marsters is going into the pack….we can just play with no centres..

Oh....

Pack for mine need more speed out wide…..still be no 1 goal kicker tho

Like Geo said, where are we getting 2 starting centres from, plus a back up one, I agree Marsters is probably a backrower, but what about our centres.

Im Happy with this element of Esans Game.

The difficulty of the kicks pays tribute to the team scoring on a higher grade of position on the field.

I would like to see better offloads and for him to run more . I would like to see him in a Fonua / Hurrell like style that can terrorise the opposition.

It feels like gets half a tackle bust but isn't 100% sure of his support player's line or timing. I'd rather he hold the ball than chuck and hope if he's not confident.

Totally agree Cosimo, good observation

This is the by product of being a team that has been cobbled together from whats available and from all over.

Have you noticed he has stopped offloading? I'd like to see his stats from the first 8 games and now in the last 8\. He is just not running with the same intensity and desire either. However, on the positive side, his kicking definitely seems to have improved.

His defence capabilities, and ability to make effort on effort indicate to me that he'd have plenty of work ahead of him to make an NRL backrower.

Hurrells too soft and injury prone. Im thinking more a Solomon Kata type.

For a guy who was a try scoring and hole running freak in the lower grades it's funny how this part of his game has almost disappeared entirely in the NRL. Obviously a step up in quality, but his ability to hit a gap and use his footwork close to the line was phenomenal and his main strength.

He seems overly concerned about being a team player though, always looking to setup his team mates by attracting defenders and offloading. Or making metres to get the team down field. This is all well and good, but he also needs to back himself far more. **As it stands no other centre in the NRL has scored fewer tries than he has. He's a centre not a prop, he needs to focus on scoring and assisting tries not just making metres on halfway**.

His goal-kicking has improved a lot though. A sensational effort for someone that had never kicked a ball a year ago. Still needs more consistency from out wide but his recent form with the boot is very encouraging!

Pretty harsh on him nothing wrong with being a team player especially if it leads to tries. Just to clarify he leads all centres for try assists with 5 equal with Roberts. He is also second for us with Brooks marginally ahead on 7 so not too bad for a centre. He has one try, sure, equal with Gagai, Hurell, Dylan Walker and Justin O Neill. I think its more a reflection on our attack than Marsters ability/form that we are scoring so few and currently have the least points scored for in the entire competition . He also does all the work, as the back 5 do topping the team this year for runs and run meters. He has however seemed to put the offload away to some degree which I think has taken away some of the unpredictability although still sits 3rd for offloads and effective offloads.

His kicking is a pleasant surprise and seems to be improving with each game.

Dane Gagai has the same amount of TRIES as Masters and less assists..

Marsters responds to challenge from Coach Cleary
Author Tanisha Stanton Timestamp Mon 23 Jul 2018, 11:52 AM

Boom Wests Tigers centre Esan Marsters said a reminder from coach Ivan Cleary of the added responsibility that comes with being an international set the stage for his dominant performance against South Sydney on Saturday night.

Marsters achieved a career goal when he represented New Zealand in the Denver Test. Cleary used a pre-game chat with his right centre to remind him such a mantle meant he now needed to take his club game to another level.

Marsters did just that in the win over the table-topping Rabbitohs. He opened the scoring before setting up David Nofoaluma for another try. His game stats of 144 running metres and 45 post-contact metres played a major role in the upset win.

"One of my goals this year was to make the Kiwi's and I achieved that," Marsters told NRL.com.

"Ivan spoke to me during the week and said that I'm a Test player now - he wanted me to take it to another level so that's what I tried to do.

"Ivan and myself came to agree that I need to be more consistent in my performances. I can't just have one good performance and then the next week have a quiet one."

Cleary got on the bus - to use the club's popular phrase - early in the 2017 season when he brought a team-first ethos which has resulted in the side playing their best footy in years.

Marsters also praised Clearly for the influence he's had on his game.

"As a coach, I think he's really proud of what we are doing and knows we can create something special here," Marsters said.

"All of the boys have bought into what he's brought here.

"He's helped me a lot with my game. I think he sees that potential in me and I appreciate what he has taught me in the game."

It was just a few weeks ago that Wests Tigers hit a slump, losing four in a row before a much-need bye in round 17 was followed by a marked improvement. Wins over the Dragons and Rabbitohs were thoroughly deserved.

Marsters put their victory against South Sydney down to identifying the Bunnies' strengths and coming up with a plan to shut them down.

"We were pretty confident after we beat the Dragons last week and that resulted in us maintaining that high going into the Rabbitohs game," Marsters said.

"It came down to our preparation throughout the week and knowing what they were going to throw at us.

"We did a lot of video on them and we knew that their strength was out wide, which is where they score most of their tries.

"As an edge player myself, as a centre I wanted to get up in their face and be a bit more aggressive because I think some of the other teams have been a bit more passive with them."

Well Cleary created his Master plan for the Rabbits and it worked a treat

Now for another new plan against the dogs
Mt tip is Moses to get in the action against his old club
He should know a few weaknesses in defence at his old club

Would be top 3 as far as most consistent players go in our squad this year. His goal kicking has really come on too.

Great seeing him take the ball at speed and set up his winger rather than the stop start jinking he seems to do a lot. I don’t know, I’m no centre, but he seems a more dangerous prospect hitting at speed

Yeah that has been my one criticism of him this year, hasn't appeared to cart the ball up with speed. Did it well last week though, very impressed.
