Esan Masters Please Stand Up

I blame Ivan for his drop in form..

Ivan never bothered to recruit us a goal kicker and Masters ended with the job in a group of second string kickers.

Masters really cops it on social media and it has been a consistent hammering since the first Panthers game and this would be the first time he has ever experienced it. Some of it gets really nasty. I remember seeing a IG post months ago by one of the players he was in and you could tell it was affecting him.

We need to spend $$ on a goal kicker is the way I see it. I rate him and am sure he will come back strong.

Straight outta concord

Luckily he's not on a long contract. If he wants to play first grade long term and keep his NZ jersey he has to step up a lot more. Ball is in his court.

Forgive me TT , what is a IG post

Secondly , if you can't handle the heat stay off social media

Lastly , find form and this all goes away

I really think Esan needs to be dropped, if not to CC at least to the bench. Our backs were getting smashed and he took 5 hitups all game. He's becoming lazier and more complacent every week. He needs a slap in the face, even if centre is a weak position for us. Talau in for Marsters this week please!
Some competition will help both boys!

IMO, Marsters has the same type of build as Latrell Mitchell, a bit broader but his strength could match Latrell. He needs some confidence as Mitchell had in his debut year. He needs to open up on his strength cos i'm sure he could be similar to Latrell.

gotta agree all year he has ambled into the defensive line and then tried to push them away, if he ran like nofo into the line he would be breaking it apart

@Matto don’t think they are similar at all. Mitchell’s body is hardened up his bones are denser than that of Marsters.

I don't think they're the same either. Latrell is long and lean, same width all the way down and not really big in the chest or shoulders. Has a real natural whippy strength about him.

Esan is tubby, more a box shape with big calves and quick feet. And this is the LEAN version of Marsters we are seeing, not the 2nd row body shape he might end up putting back on.

I think people are being a bit harsh. I don't think he has had his best season but consider he has been in FG 3 seasons and he is under his 3rd FG coach that can't make it easy on a young bloke who before he came into FG was a backrower so hasn't had the experience of growing up a centre.

Also this is his 2nd full year in FG so oppositions are also figuring him out a little more and know to look for the offload and for where he runs.

I also think his form isn't as bad as many are making out he is making 111m a match, has 34 offloads (1st for Tigers and 6th in the NRL), 6 tries (2nd best for us), 4 line breaks and 3 line break assists, 43 tackle breaks. He has also much reduced his error rate under Madge which has changed his game a bit from 1 per match down to 0.66 per match which has meant he is focusing more on quality play.

So is he playign a starring role no , could he be better yes but is he playing better then many are thinking - yes he is

Don't really care about stats but agree with the sentiment of this post...Marsters was OK last night..there really seems to be a need to criticise someone

Wests Tigers also had a plan to attack the Knights right edge which proved quire effective...not many opportunities for Marsters but he threatened with what little ball he did get broke a few tackles and a couple of nice offloads ..needs to work on setting up his outside man..had a few chances to do that but went himself..

I care about the stats, thanks boon for looking them up.

I have a strong belief that so many fans come to an absolute opinion based on one single viewing of something - one match, one try, one missed tackle. They don't go back and check the replays or the stats. And all the previous matches in the season recede into the back of the memory. The Stats serve as a reminder of what really happened, the facts of the match, subject to interpretation.

It's like the Mbye thread, people banging on that he missed a tackle on Ramien that led to a try. Yeah he did but Ramien busts 5 tackles per match, 3rd most in the NRL, so clearly he's hard to tackle. And Moses tackled / stopped him 10 times at least, so 10% critical missed tackles isn't that bad.

I personally think Masters is playing average for himself, a bit above average for centres in general. There is a general lack of form amongst centres in the comp at the moment - blokes like Euan Aitken, Dugan, Morris boys, Ramien, Lafai, Jimmy Jet, Blake, Whare etc. not at their best. Probably only Latrell, Chambers and Xerri really doing any damage at the moment. A bunch of teams are playing backrowers in the centres.

Lastly - Marsters still a first-choice NZ rep centre. And Mbye played 2 Origins. So obviously selectors have no idea about football talent either.

I preferred the Marsters of last year in terms of body weight. They tried turning him into a centre by making him cut down but it’s just taken a lot of his strength and power away, and didn’t make him any more quicker or elusive.

@Madge I wonder, and if anyone knows the question to this great.

But do we have a decent Strength and conditioning coach/team behind us?

I'm a strength and conditioning coach, and the biggest myth about ones strength/bodyweight/composition is that if you lean down you become less powerful/muscle and strength reduced - total BS.

But i always look at our boys, and think we look like we lack muscle/size compared to a lot of other teams. Look at JAC - that boy has put on serious size and muscle, and hasnt missed a beat with his pace...

Funny...Brooks has run for over 100m nearly every game this year ..but apparently it's not fast enough or not at speed or something else and can't pass yet there were two i distinctly remember that lead to TRIES inside to Thompson after making a break then a long ball to Mbye who put Momirovski in..

Marsters should've turned into a tuiaki style of player but in the centres. his now lack of size is affecting how he hits and bends the line.
He was quick before he lost the weight. Not lightning quick but quick enough to trouble his opposite number and to draw in both backs and flip the ball to the winger. Now the defenders can simply wrap him up because he has no punch

@Zach JAC has gone from a 20 year old boy with us to a 23 year old man at the Storm. It's normal for boys to fill out in their early 20s. Though i agree somewhat, generally speaking our youngsters don't seem to become as strong or fast as players at other clubs. Is that due to the individuals we sign and their max abilities? Or are we not getting that extra 5% out of them that clubs like the Storm can?

I am not sure the fact that Marsters doesn’t bend the line has anything to do with whatever weight he dropped.

More to do with the fact he usually stops before it.

maybe that's playing with his head and why he isn't bending the line??
