Robbie Farah’s knee injury leaves Wests Tigers coach Jason Taylor struggling for options
February 22, 20168:28pm
CHRISTIAN NICOLUSSI - The Daily Telegraph

ROBBIE Farah revealed how he heard a “pop’’ in his knee that has now forced him out of the opening six rounds of the season for the Wests Tigers.

Farah will undergo surgery on Tuesday morning after scans confirmed he had a lateral meniscus tear in his right knee, which he suffered during the Tigers’ final trial against Cronulla on Saturday night.

It is the worst possible news for the joint venture whose experienced dummy-half options Matt Ballin and Dene Halatau are also unavailable for the opening-round clash against the New Zealand Warriors because of injury and suspension respectively.

Tigers coach Jason Taylor will now turn to Manaia Cherrington and possibly 19-year-old rookie Jacob Liddle to try and stop gun No.9 Issac Luke in his first game for his new club.

While fans will be gutted by the Farah injury news just 12 days out from the start of their campaign, Taylor would have been the most disappointed given the need for his club to start well for the sake of his job.

After the botched attempt to move Farah along, Taylor has found himself under intense pressure to produce early results, which won’t be easy now without his most experienced player.

Given halfback Luke Brooks will also be missing through suspension for the clash against the Warriors at Campbelltown Sports Stadium, the TAB pushed the Tigers’ price out from $2.75 to $3.

Farah told The Daily Telegraph he had heard a noise in his knee, the same one he ruptured his ACL in 2004.

“I got tackled and my leg got twisted, and that’s when I heard the pop in the knee,’’ Farah said.

“I got up and I was able to run it off, and it wasn’t until I cooled down I knew something was wrong.

“But the scans came back showing a meniscus tear. I’ll get some of it cut out. I could have had it repaired, but that would have meant four to six months on the sideline.

“It’s disappointing because I’d been feeling really good, and I got through three to four months of hard work in the pre-season, I’d been happy with some parts of my trial form, and I’d been working hard on my game, especially with (attacking coach) Craig Sandercock who has taken control of our attack.

“Unfortunately now I’ll have to wait, and I’ll just work hard to come back as soon as possible.’’

Farah avoided alcohol as pre-caution during a harbour-cruise on Sunday night for the club’s season launch.

Cherrington toured England with the New Zealand side at the end of last year, but is still unable to play 80 minutes. Liddle is still eligible for the Holden Cup, and while only small, a few good judges have been impressed with his toughness. Kyle Lovett could be a stop-gap solution, while Farah quipped ‘’Justin Hunt had put his hand up to play there during the cruise on Sunday night’’.

Taylor looked genuinely relieved in recent months to finally move on from the Farah drama, so it’s crummy luck that same player will now be unavailable.

“If you can’t roll with the punches with this sort of stuff, and stay positive about what we have to do and how we’re going to go about it, you’re better off not being in the role,’’ Taylor said.

“It does make it tougher, and it’s now up to us to work out how we replace him.’’

I've never heard of a meniscus tear taking 4-6 months to heal with surgery

And I've never heard of a clean out taking 6 weeks to recover from

And before all the Dr smart alec comments come , I have 4 cleanouts and had the meniscus removed as well as everything else you can possibly imagine

Having torn my meniscus Happy I would argue 6 weeks is an expected recovery time. My tear was a bad one and I was 34 at the time, rehabbed it as hard as I could and it took 8 weeks. Depends largely on the severity of the tear too.

Played I think 12 days after mine was done (with the help of a needle and a heap of strapping )

More proof that NSW people are soft

And here I was thinking Captain Dan was a true warrior

Lets look at this from another angle,we have players that could fill in for Farah, however we have been dealt a bad hand of cards as Ballin wont be ready and Halatau is also unavailable, but we have 2 very capable young players still developing Cherry and Liddle..why cant JT juggle the forwards and I know we have a limited interchange this year, to stack the middle with experienced players who can defend and protect the younger ones, and swap Cherry. Liddle around..I know it will be a bit difficult but we have to improvise, its one game albeit the season opener, anyone who is a true supporter just like me will understand that if we lose and the players did their best and we dont have further injuries then on to the next phase of the season..it will be good to see how Liddle can handle the role…

Everything starts with the dummy half, that is why it is so important not to try and manufacture a dummy half. We have to throw caution to the wind and give both our kids 30 minutes. They might have some defensive problems but that beats having a converted back rower or half bending over picking up the ball from the play the ball, doing a numbers count and than throwing the ball the wrong side and along the ground.

Sorry SC but your off the mark on this one

Farah's service is nothing to write home about for starters

I didn't suggest a second rower , I suggested a half

Joey and Toovey were crap halves come hookers

The hooker will get a call from the 7 where they wants the ball , he just needs to hit him with a crisp pass

And your not worried about the defence

I reckon we will need to score probably 34 + points to beat the Warriors without a strong defensive hooker , losing either Farah's or Ballin's defence will be massive in the middle of the ruck

Your losing 40+ tackles and I reckon if Ballin needs to make 40 he will miss at least 15 of them and I reckon half of them will be clean misses which will result in Warriors getting in behind our defensive line

38+ of those tackles are second or 3rd man in…We need to score 34+ points you say..I would put the best attacking Hooker at the Club in there...No brainer...

Like for Like...Supercoach is spot on...

Once again Happy I know what your saying, but my mind goes back to the days when Sheens tried the odd make shift dummy half and even when Halatau was first given the job,we went from a well oiled machined into a broken down bomb. It would be great if we did have a player who could slot into the role, maybe a half or a back rower but Iam not sure we do especially with just over ten days out from our first big game.

Cherrington with Moses helping out at dummy ball… I think Mitch is tough enough and won't suffer from lack of self belief

I've no qualms with Cherrington getting 50 odd mins. He's not the best defensive hooker around as of yet, but I think his problems are being overstated slightly - he really wasn't that bad in his stints last season. Ignore the 9s form.
The other side of it is that his attacking play is very sharp and will be great to see him get a chance.
It's the other 30 that is the issue. I don't like the idea of converting a backrower at all, and would prefer we rolled the dice with Liddle - though I think I'd have Rankin off the bench to do the job.

No, he's suspended for round 1…. :brick:

Ok - from round 2 onwards…...

Don't count your chickens there either..

Did he end up having surgery Geo ??

No but hasn't returned to full training yet…possibly this week...Edwards due back to full training and Hunt also picked up a back injury in the Sharks trial...unlikely he'll start Rd 1...
