Farah made dis-tasteful tweet about gillard

Politicians deserve respect and more so the position of prime minister even if you don't like the actual politician. Everyone deserve respects , however we also have the right in this country to free speech, to offend and to be offended. The problem with limiting free speech is who decides what is and isn't ok. I think the prime minister is an idiot and a horrible politician and the sooner we get back to a liberal government the better but I think some of the comments about her are out of line. Also I think what was tweeted to Robbie was disgraceful and that person should be rebuked, shamed and hopefully learns his words have consequences but I would never support restrictions on them.

It's not even the same. One was an off the cuff remark to mark geyer, where as someone went out of their way to find Robbie in twitter and deliberately provoke him. Now if Robbie directed his tweet straight to gillard then it's a different story but that's not the case. Poor judgement at the time but not a vile degrading direct comment to the PM herself

In our society we are fortunate enough to have many 'freedoms' however coupled with these 'freedoms' is responsibility, accountability, consideration. Where people decide to exercise, for example, their freedom of speech to the point where others are offended then consequences come into play depending on the level of offensiveness and the number of people offended. In cases where many (majority) are offended then sanctions or rules or laws are introduced. We all know this, however in this country things like twitter and facebook exist outside of the above although this may change. The tweet made about Robbie's late mother was disgraceful imo and deserving of consequences for the writer. Again imo Robbie's tweet concerning the Prime Minister cannot be compared to the one sent to him about his late mother in terms of offensiveness however if I were the PM I might have a different view, besides the office of PM is deserving of more respect regardless of who occupies the position. Nonetheless both writers are learning that there are consequences to exercising freedoms and are being reminded that they come with responsibility.

Hang on Cunno ,why does the PM deserve more respect than you or I ??

She was voted in by the people (well not this person) so she does not deserve any more or less respect than any other person regardless of race ,religion ,marital status or sex as far as I am concerned

I take your point Happy and yes we are all entitled to the same level of respect. I was referring to the office of PM not Gillard or any other person who has occupied that office. People are entitled to have their views about politicians, I am as critical of them as the next person but to me it isn't appropriate to offer the head of our country, regardless of who it is, a noose for their birthday even if it was a joke.

First time I disagree with you Cunno. I have no respect for Gillard. The rich get richer the poor get poorer.

I wasn't making it personal AHX, my comment was about the office of Prime Minister not a particular individual.

Politics should be banned on this board.

I will never look at some of the posters in this thread with any respect going forward due to what they have posted

Politics is very devisive atm.

On topic. How about banning facebook and twitter if the players are not using an alias. Simple really.

You tweet then you meet the reserve grade coach next week. Obviously wouldn't work under Sheens as he hasn't dropped anyone for 25 years. Just look at the punishment Benji got for flouting the kings cross ban :roll

I agree that someone shouldn't be offerred a noose for there 50th birthday , but being PM doesn't make it any better or worse

Unfortunately Robbie has come out of this looking the fool.

He should have pointed out how horrendous the comment was through his twitter account (like he did) and left it at that. Calling out the politicians and holding the press conference like he did was a knee jerk reaction. Unfortunately he received poor advice from his manager and Wayne Cousins in that regard. Again he has come out today in response to the Gillard comment - just further digging a hole.

Take a break Robbie, you have had a tough year and deserve time off. It will do you good.

Technology is out of control in regards to how people let it run their lives these days. For example, i know of people who have ended relationships via a txt msg or simply just deleting the other person from facebook. Technology has eliminated the burden of having to look at someone face to face, whether its ending relationships or throwing out insults like this thread relates to. Its crazy

I think it would be a shame if Robbie can't have some contact with the genuine fans

He just needs to choose his words carefully and remember to count to ten before you hit SEND

Forget about politics (they are all the same IMO), it's about the hypocrisy, no?
Whether one comment was worse is another issue. Rob effectively said kill yourself in jest or otherwise. I mean, twitter, why would you bother and if you do, be prepared for idiots and ignore when you come across them as hard and aggravating as it may be. The opinions of strangers mean naught to me

Hope this wasn't mentioned earlier but the main difference is that Farah didn't tweet @ the PM. If he said "I hope you get a noose for your birthday" and tagged her then this would be a lot worse. Still bad as it is

That's correct. Also Farah is posting using a known, public profile rather than hiding behind an alias (I realise there is a slight irony there!)
