South Sydney Rabbitohs set to offer Wests Tigers hooker Robbie Farah NRL lifeline
South Sydney have emerged as a contender for the services of Robbie Farah in a move that could resurrect his NRL career.
Farah has again been named in reserve grade for Wests Tigers this weekend in the biggest indication yet he has placed his last first-grade game for the club.
Although Farah has some experience playing in the halves, not even a knee injury to Luke Brooks was enough to prompt a recall into a new-look Tigers spine.
It was thought that St George Illawarra appeared Farah's most likely destination should Farah decide not to see out the final year of a lucrative Tigers contract worth about $950,000.
However, the Rabbitohs are poised to become a legitimate option, with the embattled club expected to table a two-year deal.
Farah's brother, Eddie, is Souths' physiotherapist and the club is looking to bolster its stocks in the hooking position. South Sydney signed Damien Cook in the off-season but the former Bulldog has been unable to cement a first-grade spot.
The Rabbitohs are looking to shake up their roster after a disappointing season that has resulted in them losing their past eight games. That streak could well extend to nine unless they are able to defeat premiership heavyweights the Storm in Melbourne on Saturday night.
It is understood the Tigers are prepared to subsidise Farah's wage to the tune of up to $600,000 to get him off their books, which could make him reasonable value for rival clubs.
The Tigers are already planning for life after Farah by identifying Gold Coast's Daniel Mortimer as one of the men to help fill the void should the NSW hooker depart at the end of the season.
However, the joint-venture outfit will only have the funds required to make a play for Mortimer if Farah leaves at the end of this season.
South Sydney are looking to shed a number of their own contracted players, with Tom Burgess at the top of their list.
The prop has struggled to recapture his best form and there are concerns he is taking up too big a chunk of the salary cap. The club hasn't been able to settle on a regular No.9 since Issac Luke was released to join the Warriors.
