Farah to stay as Tigers hold powwow over Sheens fallout

WESTS TIGERS players have met en masse with leading officials at the club to address the circumstances of, and the fallout from, the sacking of coach Tim Sheens.

Tigers captain Robbie Farah yesterday revealed the snap meeting, held at the club's Concord Oval headquarters on Wednesday, as the hooker denied the players had revolted against their coach, and insisted he would be at the club until at least the end of next season.

Farah's future has been the subject of speculation, much of it linking him to Ricky Stuart's Parramatta, since talk of player unrest at the club emerged as a result of the departures of popular players Chris Heighington and Beau Ryan to Cronulla.

Farah stressed he believed the departures of Heighington and Ryan "had no bearing on what's happened to Tim", while also maintaining he and his teammates played no role in the sacking of Sheens as head coach.

"It's incorrect," he said, after training under Sheens with the Australian train-on squad. "I've got the utmost respect for Tim. Our working relationship has never been in question. Obviously we haven't seen eye to eye on a few things, but that's never been a problem, and it wasn't a problem moving forward.

"It was just a matter of the club realising after 10 years it was probably the right time to freshen the place up a bit and make some changes with the football team. You've seen that with players and now with Tim."

That said, Farah felt it was important to seek answers from chief executive Stephen Humphreys and chairman David Trodden, which the players did on Wednesday, the day after the officials announced they would try to convince Sheens to accept another role within the club.

"We spoke, we were pretty honest and open about things, people put their hands up where they'd made mistakes," he said. "They addressed us, and we asked questions . . . It was important that everyone in the place knew where they stood."

Sheens spoke yesterday about his plans for the Australian squad, reiterating his desire to coach the Kangaroos through to the World Cup next year despite his setback.

It is unlikely he will accept a new position with the club, given another coach will be at the helm. That was even made clear by Farah, who said: "Everyone in the club would like him to stay in some capacity, but knowing Tim, I think he'd probably find that a bit difficult. He has a great passion for coaching, and he wants to remain a coach."

The meeting the club had to have after recent events, Farah's comments as quoted in the article are typical of a quality club captain.

However it shouldn't have been up to the players to force such a meeting - management should have organised a meeting with all parties when things started spiralling out of control - anyway at least now everyone has been able to air their grievances and can get on with restoring some semblance of normality.

I guess this is all part of the process the club has to go through before we can get down to the footy side of things.

All this says is Farah will not be seeking a release for 2013….it does not suggest we is staying at the Tigers beyond

I'm hoping Benji and Robbie start leading from the front this year. The Tigers have made their bed now they have to sleep in it. No more whinging, no more carrying on about who is playing where or the direction of the club etc. I hope everyone chills out over their break and comes back ready to rock.

Paul Harragon, Matty Johns and Warren Ryan left the Knights in 2000\. A popular, funny Back, a tough forward and an experienced premiership winning coach. Sound familar… what happened to the Knights in 2001??

I'm surprised this forum isn't up in arms about how all the players are sooks for holding the meeting, and how they should just shutup and do their job etc.

Very professional of Farah and shows the standard if a quality club captain. I know he didn't mention anything after 2013\. But he's being professional about not spilling his future out to the media. Anything could happen until then and he obviously doesn't want anything set in stone for it to come back against him later.

regarding how players and their contracts have been treated so far, i dont mind players asking questions of the CEO.

i would like us to ignore the past now though. hopefully the players know where they stand at, especially senior players.. they deserve to. if benji wants to sook about players leaving, he can butt off as well. ask humpty the tough q. and if he isn't honest, then the players have every right to ask for leaving the club.

There is every chance that the Tigers will come through this year with a stronger team which has the right mental attitude and will to win through to the finals and beyond. The one thing they have to realise is that this is not a team for the "boys". Players who lose form and play poorly do not have a mortgage on their position and if one of them is dropped we don'r want regular first graders crying because they miss their mate who is now playing State Cup.

In his MX column today, Robbie says this about his future -
"For my part, I don't intend to leave the club. But it's difficult right now with so many unknowns - a new coach coming in and an unknown salary cap for 2014.
The tigers are keen to start talks, which is why my manager is for. I'm just focused on leading the club I love so much back from a disappointing season."

Hopefully we resign him on a 4 year deal and can finish his career at a place he loves .

Well I might be listening to my heart, but his words tell me if we offer him the right deal he won't go anywhere.

What the heck is a powwow?

According to dictionary.com it is a North American Indian ceremony involving feasting, singing, and dancing.
