Finally a signing

I believe we need to look on a bigger scale in terms of signings. I'm not talking about players like Taylor or Gubb. Managers, Mentors, trainers who are respected in the league and build a new culture. Similar to panthers signing Phil Gould.

The Golden State Warriors signed Jerry West, Steve Nash, Bob Myers…Spurs RC Buford etc

We should be looking at bringing in someone like a Darren Lockyer as a consultant or someone like Gould to change the toxic losing culture we have...that's long term change

We had one he was called Tim Sheens

Without Tim Sheens as coach we have finished
10th
12th
13th
15th
13th
15th

With Sheens we
won a premiership
3 times top 4 (inc Prem)
Finished between 9th and 11th every other year after the first one

Without him other then the first year where we spent a fortune from the NRL merger gift this club has never come anywhere near the top 8 under 4 different coaches

People winged about Sheens but what it has shown is that he took a horrible lub and made it competitive. We made the top 4 in 2 of the last 3 years with him as coach - Top 4 and yet he was sacked and look what has happened.

IMO we need a new version perhaps Brian Smith

Also for all the talk of Gus Panthers have made 1 finals series in the 4 yrs he has been thier and otherwise finished 15th, 11th, 10th - Worse then we were under Sheens

We have Mark O'Neil. He may not have the reputation yet but he has the job and the skills that you ask for. He's only been there a month though and these things take years to happen, and that's IF they make the right decisions. Otherwise its just the same as we've been for the past 10 years, a continuous loop of mediocrity.

Does give it some perspective when you put it that way.

Was Sheens a decent coach who managed to jag a premiership during an otherwise average coaching run, or was he a very competent coach who turned a rabble of a club into a fairly competitive outfit for most of his tenure.

I fully believe that 3 finals appearances in 10 seasons is not good enough, and as a head coach you can't hang around forever with that kind of record, even if everyone knows you've done an alright job in your time.

But if a genie came to me tomorrow and said - hire me as coach and I GUARANTEE you a premiership within 3 years, but only 2 finals appearances in the following 7 years, would I take the deal? Probably yes.

Brian Smith - half of our problems.

But let's get him back to consult some more.

Worst post you have ever made Boon imo.

Benji Marshall took a horrible club and made it competitive. When he couldn't be bothered, we sucked. He defined our club during Sheens' reign. Flashy but of little substance. Even in the two good years after '05 the grit wasn't there, resulting in that choke against the Roosters and the Warriors. I wonder if Sheens ever gave Benj a percentage of his contract; he'd never have been Australian coach without him.

Yes, the Panthers have been consistent under performers over the last few years but don't forget that while Gus has been there, Cleary has also been there and we seem to be clamouring for his coaching services. Makes very little sense to me and the Panthers have looked a tougher team this year under Griffin.

We had a good squad under Sheens, but it didn't really fit under the cap. We paid superstar money for players who were just pretty good, and we had a terrible injury record that make it difficult to keep our expensive squad on the park.

The only way we could afford that team was to back end their deals, paying money out of subsequent seasons to fund those promising runs at the finals in 2010,2011\. We came heartbreakingly close to grand finals in both those years, and then the bills came in.

To stay under the cap the Tigers had to pay half that Sheens squad just to get rid of them, the likes of Ayshford, Heighington, and Gibbs helped rebuild Cronulla while being paid out of our cap. Tuquiri, Marshall and Moltzen mostly got paid to go to physio appointments while we ran kids and reserve graders in firsts. Every year we'd hit the second tier cap as well and be barred from promoting any more reserve replacements. That's when the Sheenius positional switching got really optimistic.

The practice of paying players out of subsequent seasons on long term back ended deals is a continuing legacy of the Sheens years. We're still paying for it. Farah and Lawrence were pretty sharp footballers in 2010\. They're collecting their money now.

Tim Sheens was a pretty good coach who tried to buy a premiership with a squad we couldn't afford, but lacked the strength and conditioning department to actually keep the team on the park anyway. It was an exercise in how not to manage a professional sporting club and the mismanagement is preventing us from signing proper first graders now.

Of course Penrith look like a stronger team maybe that's because Griffen actually has a full team to chose from unlike Cleary last season poor fella players were dropping like flies when it comes to injuries and Merrin has played very well this year

Good post. We were saddled with an annoying legacy from that period which, coupled with some bad luck like the Lawrence injury, took years to recover from. He deserved to be sacked at the end, or somebody did anyway.

I didn't say stronger, I said tougher but Cleary was there before last year and you can only go by his results. I wonder whether this forum would forgive him for last year if he was here.

What skills are those? If Payten is appointed coach, about the only skill I can see is creating jobs for his old mates. Lets see him keep all our good players, get rid of the deadwood and make sure that there is enough left in the cap to recruit quality players. That is what should be expected of someone in his role

Look to be honest the "signing of Elijah Taylor is typical of the Tigers. If you think about it… You hear the rumour, people begin to confirm the rumour and if the signing is true it take months for the signing to occur... Look at where we are in the season it is round 8 we have LOST 6 IN A ROW.. A third of the season has come and gone.. Everyone on every nrl programs, show and radio station before the season started had said Newcastle and the Gold Coast will fight it out for the spoon well guess what BOTH TEAMS HAVE BEATEN US.. We came into this year with so much hope but now it is almost gone and to bring Elijah Taylor back into this there are 66 days until the June 30 deadline if we are any hope of finishing anywhere but the bottom 4 we ET is our man.. If the tigers recruitment officers and Jason Taylor don't pull their heads out of the sand they need to go..

Sorry, but after copping this for years why can't us at tigers fans sit back and say "Oh yes what a win undefeated after 12 rounds"

I HAVE HAD ENOUGH.. Does anyone know when or if ET will be signed?

I'm with you. How can we release Taupau,Blair,Thompson,Austin and Koroibete and not replace all that money with ONE elite player. Because we are the worst run Club in the NRL.

We won last night so suddenly now we don't need a new signing.

Couldn't agree more, Col. The lynch mob were right in their element this week, after that bad loss. What gets me, though, is this is the time when our team needs support, a time for the fans and members to close ranks and give the boys our support. As it was , the team and coaches pulled together and showed the football that they are coached to play and came away with the win. A bit of egg on faces? No probably not, it hasn't changed in years.

I think that teams always do better when they know that their supporters will stick through thick and thin. I've been doing it for 55 years (yep, I'm a glutton for punishment) and any win, as rare as it may be is so sweet!

It's very challenging supporting a team that has been the worst over the past 16 years…There's only so much you can do after a certain time. When you have paid thousands and thousands of dollars to a team that seemingly never has any consistency with winning. Travelled miles and miles to Canberra, Townsville, Brisbane etc to see your team get wallopped.

It isn't just after one bad loss. It has been decades of utter ineptitude. It is certainly understandable people have had enough. Fans don't want mediocrity. We all just want to see our team win consistently.

I believe that in the days prior to last night's match the club's management, coaching staff and players finally really took into consideration what the club's fans have been going through. There should be so much more of this type of consideration because without fans a club cannot survive,

We need a couple of new signings. This was about "signings", but suddenly it was about how bad our team is going. Wise up.
