Fishing Thread

I was involved in the seafood industry for a while years ago. Many shops and restaurents sold fish as Barra, that was Nile perch from Africa, it's the same species as Barra,. The markets sold thousands of tons of it. Another con, was Dory fillets, which were in fact freshwater cat fish from the Mekong delta, it would be close to the most polluted river in the world. Buyers beware.
Yes I remember Sleeve, Sydney’s biggest seafood wholsaler sold ling a Sth Australian fish, tastes exactly like Barra. It was in some of the top restaurants in Sydney at the time. Buyers knew what they were getting, the poor mans barra. The Wholesaler gave me the heads up.
Sometimes people believe what they want to when there’s incentive.

had an old Fisho tell me to catch bream, chicken dipped in aniseed-ouzo.or a piece of aniseed ring(lolly) she was suss on the lollys, just about choked on 1 as a 9 year old.lol
Yes mate . . . aniseed is def an attractant for bream. I add some when the water's a bit muddy. You used to be able to find the little 50 odd ml bottles in the supermarket next to the cake decorating stuff . . . they were only around $1 each. Woolies stopped stocking them, now IGA has also stopped. My Mrs heard me whinging about no friggin aniseed and bought me a 500ml bottle from some internet seller for my birthday. Used it recently for 9 bream from 28-42cm.

Just been on google , looking for fluorocarbon leader ratings. The guy tested many brands for cost, diameter to breaking strain, abrasion resistance, ets. He used the equipment at Platypus factory.
The results were, Suffix21 100%, Asari , Ocea, and Schneider , in no particular order, though Schneider got special mention. The results shocked me, as many of the most praised and most costly, did not rate as well. I was an FC rock fan , but in future i will buy Schneider.
you tube--20lb fluorcarbon leaders abrsasion ,strength, cost. Tested by fishing monthly magazine.

My uncle taught me about what he called a pudding bait. Bread ,cheese and Devon mainly with garlic and aniseed added and then put through a hand mincer . He would always out fish us 5 to 1 when it came to bream.

Regarding fluorocarbon testing, they also did braid, no conclusions as the ratings on the boxes were all over the place, some rating at 20lb actually broke at 37 lb. Most broke quite higher then stated, comparisons were impossible.
you tube braid test fishing monthly magazine. It's worth looking at, just for the comic value of the honesty of the manufacturers. Me ,i like power pro.

Plenty of the pubs and clubs have flathead tails on the menu but it is frozen battered crap that tastes nothing like flathead. Give me a fresh flathead on the bone anyday. Any whole fish for that matter always tastes better than a fillet.
It's the frozen Argentina stuff it's cheap

Interesting, sleeve. I'm an FC Rock guy as well. It seems to have a harder "shell", if you know what I mean. Better for luring around rocks and racks, and baiting through weed and kelp.
Years ago, I used to go into the Schneider place at Caringbah, IIRC, and buy the line at good prices. I also remember his daughters used to work there as well. Good sorts serving you good line at good prices.
I'll have to look up your youtube test.
Cheers mate.
Edit: I just watched the youtube testing. Very interesting and methodical way of doing it.
I use 6lb for whiting, and 9 or 10lb for flatties and bream . . . so the 20lb sampling was not exactly relevant for me, but in principle I'm happy to go with his findings. Co-incidentally I recently bought a couple of spools of the Wilson FC and was quite happy with it. I did find it a bit thick for test, but also noticed the abrasion resistance.
I'll have to get me some Schneider for sure.
Thanks again for the tip mate.
