Fishing Thread

Lol. If I was your dad, and you rocked the boat just to piss me off . . . you wouldn't need to dive to be overboard. 😉🙂
Good memories, I’m talking late 50s, early 60s.
Funny, but my Dad, now long departed, one day sold the boat , got rid of his fishing gear and never went again.
But he did take me to Doyle’s regularly, so he instilled a love of seafood in me that I have to this day.

I hear you talking. Hated fishing with the old man - too many hours on the water in Botany Bay or Port Hacking occasionally getting good catches but mainly nada.
Surprised I love it so much now but guess I have him to thank for that.
Fishing is like a game of chess, just throwing bait and hook into the water and waiting to catch a fish, can be boring. It's about finding locations, weather to anchor or drift, fish light or heavy, J hooks, or circle hooks? What baits, prawns, mullet squid etc, Lure fishing, plastics ,different colours, sizes and weights, line classes etc. It's the challenge that makes fishing great, open your horizons and experiment, then when you catch a trophy fish, it is so much better.

It's a sad, sad day when a man has to get rid of his fishing gear.
My biggest fear is that when I die, my wife sells my fishing gear for what I told her I paid for it.

Amazing all the different baits getting mentioned with bream ...a lot comes down to environment and the time of year too I guess

Some people swear by soldier crabs ...never caught one with a soldier crab ......same with whiting with soldier crabs .....nada
When I was a young bloke we would have two weeks in May fishing the breakwall at Urunga, just south of Coffs Harbour. Did this for years.
Fished the run in and run out tides for blackfish and bream. Two hook rig under a float with long rods and centrepin fly reels.
Burleyed with sand, green weed and smashed soldier crabs. Green weed on one hook and a small soldier crab on the other. Never failed us and always went home with a full fish keep. Held the record for a 4lb 10oz blackfish at the local shop there for years.

No ones mentioned bread for bream, i have never used it, but many swear by it. Anyone on here use it?
Have used bread on Drummer down the nsw south coast. Burley up with bread and mould it onto the hook. No sinker, just let it float around in the wash and hang on.

I used to use bread a lot in estuaries mate. I mixed it with a small amount of tuna oil to mould it around the hook. Cheap bait 👍

Anybody got any tips for catching King Fish? What type of bait/lure to use? Heavy or light setup, any certain tricks etc
Jigging.
Use a knife or blade style jig lure around 200grams, drop it free spool to the bottom. Once on the bottom, place your rod under your arm and the mechanical motion you use is pump the rod upwards and wind the reel at the same time as fast as you can, over and over until you reach the surface. Once you can see the lure, immediately drop it to the bottom and repeat.
It absolutely cains your arms and back, but it attracts the big fellas. Once a fish hits, keep the motion going for 2 reasons…
1. To ensure the hook is set
2. To keep them from diving back to the bottom where they can break you off.
Use an overhead reel if you have one as it’s action is easier to wind fast in this jigging motion. Remember to feather the spool with your thumb as you drop it or the line will come screaming off the reel and create a birds nest of shit.
