Fittler's Team Merger List

It's very noticeable that Fittler did not make any mention of Roosters merging. I am sick of overpaid NRL has-beens like Fittler and Andrew Johns thinking that they are wise Gods of the NRL. What right have they to make these comments?

He has every right to make the comments, and he's easily ignored, so it's fine.

Seriously if you were going to merge us with anyone it would be the Dogs as they basically are in between our Inner city territory and South West Territory. Of course a Souths Easts combo would make the most sense but that will never happen while the NRL are in bed with them

Not sure why Freddy is even bringing this up. Seems to be on an endless cycle where it reappears every 3 months.

Sorry just noticed this thread, I'd been posting off-topic about it on the signings rumours thread (sorry).

I'll repeat what I said there:

We shouldn’t merge at all, and I will oppose any merger. We have one of the biggest fanbases of any club, especially any Sydney club. We produce a tonne of juniors. We represent more of Sydney than any other Sydney club - from the inner west to Macarthur, via Leichhardt, Ashfield and Lidcombe. In other words at a stretch we could lay claim to representing western Sydney as a whole. we also have a big following in the bush.

I think the two who already made the merger sacrifice - us and St George-Illawarra are the two Sydney clubs that should unquestionably stay as they are.

Nice of Freddy to not mention the Roosters. Full of stars, two comps un a row and still barely pull a crowd. They will die post Politis.

Yep. If a Sydney team must go, nobody is more worthy than the Roosters. No fans, no juniors, low tv ratings, and it's not a rugby league area. Literally the only thing they have going for them is a car dealer.

If Wests Tigers were forced into another merger or axed, and the Roosters stayed, I would 100% give the NRL away for good.

As much right as you and me

What's your thoughts on this?

Fittler & Johns have both spent too much time merging alcohol and chemical substances with themselves.

Who cares what Freddy thinks. It's only an opinion story. Can't see why it's even gotten any air.

Souths, Roosters and St George are literally within 10km of the same geographical distance lol. It makes sense to get rid of the least popular one, which is the roosters

Throw in Canterbury - they are basically another inner city team. Funny how they escape - they have caused heaps of turmoil for the NRL yet no one ever talks of them merging or moving.

Now that Todd is gone, maybe they won't be so protected.

Roosters and south or Penrith and parr’s merge before we get kicked out. Don’t think they will touch Souths though as they’ve already got back into the comp once

More the pity - scumbags!

The only clubs that will disappear will be the ones that go broke .. and to be frank that’s the way it should be no more being propped up by the governing body . It is going to happen for sure and certain ... then the merger will be the option !

Unlikely the NRL will force anyone out or to merge.

I also find it laughable that some think a full-time Perth team will work after a few failed and expensive sport expansion efforts.

No disrespect to those in the west either, but Perth's the most isolated city in the world with a population less than greater western Sydney. All without a lot of interest in league or corporate support.

The game would be better off having a new product offering with an expanded origin concept involving NSW, QLD, NZ and Tonga rather than re-jigging the model that nearly died a few months back.

We'd have a new product to sell and would kill AFL and Union.

Important to note Freddie was asked a question "if you had to get rid of two teams" - he never proposed it

Should have passed on the question and do what he does best Coaching NSW

We've done our bit 20 years ago... Tho I think we need to settle on one ground to consolidate our identity... Easier said than done though

I said the same thing in the other thread. And honestly if we really did have to merge for the good of the game, I'd support it, even if that meant merging with the Bulldogs, literally my least-favoured team in the competition.

But I'd only support a merger if all the other clubs had to merge as well, to get the 9 Sydney teams down to a better number, which is probably 5: South-East Sydney Roostertohs, North Sydney and Central Coast Beagles, Inner West Tiger Dogs, Southern Sydney Shagons and the Western Sydney Peels.

Even then, that's 1M potential people per side (total Sydney population divided by 5, rather than local population of each district), which is 5.5x the population of Townsville, 2.5x the population of Canberra, 3x the population of Newcastle, 60% the population of Auckland and 50% the population of Perth.

So the argument about a crowded market sort of falls flat when you consider expansion locations and total population, taking into account just how massive Sydney is and how much it dwarfs other cities. Even, ideally, you'd want a second Melbourne team as rapidly as any other location, if ignorant of the knowledge that they barely support the first Melbourne team as it is.
