Five-Eight role a pleasing headache for Todd Payten

It is the selection headache Wests Tigers NYC Coach Todd Payten enjoys having.

Where do you play exciting young talents Kurtis Rowe, Manaia Rudolph and Jordan Marshall-King? It is a nice problem to have for Payten whose outstanding young side have won 5 of their 7 matches to sit in second place on the U20s ladder.

Rowe had been impressive at full-back early on in the season but missed last Sunday’s 40-24 win over Penrith through illness.

His absence saw Payten move goal-kicking five-eighth Rudolph to full-back, resulting in Marshall-King starting at five-eighth after a few weeks of coming off the interchange bench.

Rudolph has also been impressive with the boot, kicking at 71 per cent.

He converted 6 from 7 goals against the Panthers and is the competition’s leading points scorer.

“I thought Jordan (pictured right) would provide a bit more direction playing at five-eighth than Manaia (pictured left). He is probably a little bit more assertive in talking the boys around the field,’’ Payten said.

“It is why I have Manaia and Jordan in the side. I’ve been asking Kurtis to sniff around the ruck a bit more and he been very strong in some games.

“Jordan is probably a little bit more of an experienced player when it comes to structure than Manaia. That’s why I put him in the side.

“The good thing is all three of them can only improve.”

Payten will have to do some more deep thinking with news the very talented five-eighth Curtis Sironen is set to return from a shoulder injury in coming weeks.

Irrespective of who plays five-eighth, one thing is certain – this is a very serious Wests Tigers U20s side with talent to burn right across the park.

Payten has more depth at 5/8 than any other position, and there's some serious talent there too. God knows how he'll choose the side in a few weeks time when Sirro returns.

When I first read the headline I thought Payten was kitting up for the NSW Cup - Sandow style.

I hear that Marshall-King tore it up on the weekend? Any reports?

Yes he did as did Rudolph back in fullback. I like this line up, it worked well!!

amazing depth there at the moment, whoever misses out is very unlucky.

Siro will clearly play, the question is where.

I think that
1\. Rowe
6\. Rudolf
11\. Sirro (edge backrower)
14\. Marshall-King

is how I would do it.

Agreed all four should be on the field but if someone had to be the unlucky one to miss out it would have to be Rowe. Yes he's done some good things but he make too many mistakes in missed tackles and dropped balls! These could be costly in the tough month or so ahead?!!

how about we bring Jordan to first grade and try him instead of tquiri at wing…

Not in a million years. Koroibete and Nofoaluma are both well ahead of him when it comes to wing.

Interesting to hear Marshall is developing. I had always understood he was unlikely to make it. It now sounds like he is in with a chance.

Can i get their full name please wanna search them

Seriously, search the forum, they are listed here on a regular basis.

For mine I think the #6 for the NYC by about mid season will be Mitchell Mosses, he is that good. I think Curtis will come back as a centre as I believe he will start his NRL career as a centre.

Curtis Sironen won't just walk straight back onto the paddock, he will start coming off the bench until he is ready!! As for 5/8 if Marshall-King and Rudolph keep playing as well as they have been Mosses may find it hard to break into the mould!
And if Miller makes it into 1st grade, maybe Toddy should consider a Marshall-King/Rudolph halves combo? Both were National Reps for Touch Rugby in the Australian U20's (Marshall-King) and New Zealand U17's and U19's (Rudolph) and are good mates; combine their skills from touch, union and league, spice it up with some natural flare and a bit of fine-tuning and this could be the making of something lethal.

Moses has been destroying SG Ball apparently, but the 2 that have been playing in 6 at the moment are going enormous, and Siro has yet to get on the park, Id find it tough to find room for Moses (despite wanting to see him get a crack)
