My year 5 teacher was Steve Gearin, former Bulldogs winger who scored that try in the 1980 GF. The main memory I have of him was that he overlooked me for selection in the Balmain knockout squad even though I was the only rugby league player in our class and dominated the selection trials. I was a quiet and well behaved kid back then and didn’t question his decision, but it cut me up deeply and still hurts when I think about it. Years later I found out he’d had a fight with my uncle in a match a decade or so prior and most likely made the decision out of revenge. Poor form to do that to an 11 year old kid.

I was seldom in trouble at school... and I am not a physically violent person.
But there were a couple of teachers at **Ashfield Boys High** that I would not hesitate in smakin in the mouth if I ever bumped into them, for the way they dished out the cane to a few of the kids.
I even had a female (I wont call her a lady) teacher...Miss Devine... in Croydon Primary who accused me incorrectly of stealing another kids money and mistreated me very badly in handling the situation.
All these teachers would be dead now probably.

When were you there?

My Economics and home room teacher in high school was John Muggleton

I once refused entry to Brett Kimmorley into a club. Jason Taylor walked into the same place like he'd owned it too.

I'll never disagree with anything you say @Tigerdave.
I wouldn't be game to :grinning:

Hey mate, I went to Ashfield De La Salle. You blokes at Ashy High used to take our straw boaters off our heads and throw them on the road so they get crushed under car wheels. We'd then have to explain to our parent why they had to buy another hat.

Trinity grammar blokes used to cop it from us when I was there.... around Ashfield station about 3.30.. Wed cause a bit of chaos

what an interesting read.
my first pe teacher was a mean mother called colin burford who played reserve grade for newtown.
he didnt like kids who couldnt tie their ties properly and he got me one day and almost chocked me to demonstrate how to do a tie properly
subsequently I was always very nervous about going to pe lessons.
i reckon there might have been a few parental complaints about his behaviour modification strategies.
surprise, surprise he only lasted a year and was replaced by the dual team of rod batterham and bob smithies.
Have fond memories of both these gentlemen.

Yeh, I knew a few of the Trinity boys. They had boaters too. I used to walk through Ashy station with my head down hoping not to attract attention.

Not NRL related but I bumped into Natalie Portman Christmas shopping with her kids at Rebel Sport in the city today.

I bumped into Trent Robinson today in the QVB, he was waiting outside Pandora with his kids.
I'd happily swap that encounter for Natalie Portman, she was my Hollywood crush growing up

When he was there it was a pretty rough place apparently.
I didnt arrive there until 1959, and by that time it had become reasonably civilised.
But yes....I do remember some of the kids giving the 'posh' boys from De La Salle a hard time.

Seen James Tamou at Greco’s in Glenmore Park a few times..see plenty of Panthers often enough in the town centre.

JT can eat.

She was wearing a baseball cap but had makeup on so you could tell it was her, but no one else seemed to notice.

Ha the opposite, his wife is tiny, she was an international level sprinter.

Edit....I'd go as far as to say that Tamou's in laws have better genetics that Tamou. His kids are likely to be next level.

my clsssmate i mentioned earlier Willie Carne ...was playing 2nd 15 and i reckon over 100 metres he wouldnt have been in the top 20 runners in our grade...Steve Nance gets a hold of him and the bloke ends up winning 2 MOTM awards in SOO games

I tend to agree...I used to play a lot of footy (u13-u16s)with jack bird

Even in his junior footy days he struggled with injury. He had a bad shoulder injury in under 14s, needed surgery or some sort of treatment and hadn’t played for just on a year, worked extremely hard and made the u16s blues side (a year younger than everyone) scored 2 tries and got MOTM. It was literally his first game in 12 months and he killed it at the highest level....(well in terms of juniors)

I’ve always rated him and it’s a shame he has had so many injury woes

Meet the most low key interesting character on a train in the 80's from Brisbane to Sydney overnight trip, sorry can't recall his name as nearly 40 years ago now.

I had been returning from Xmas vacation and needed a few beers to end the holiday, so asked him if he wanted a beer.
We got chatting asked what he did for a living and was the head grounds man at Leichardt oval at the time.

Told me some great stories of current and past players, at the time we had a great team.

At the end of the trip his Misses was waiting for him at the station and i had to help him off the train as was still quite hungover from the drinking session the night prior.

Arranged for myself to attend at game that next year where i got into the dressing shed met a few players and went to the after dinner celebrations after winning against the Dogs.

Grew up in Portland, Craig Bellamy also did as did former Wests and Parra player John Baker. We moved to Lidcombe in the late 60s as did John Baker when he signed with Wests. Plenty of Wests players were living in Lidcombe as did Kevin Hastings who was there for many years. Mad Mick Alchin chased after me one day after I had a scuffle with one of his sons.

Went to school with a Steven Alchin at Annandale north back in the mid 70's
Wonder if they are related
I don't think he played footy when I lived in Sydney
Not sure if he ever did

Live near
Alfie
(his daughter was my son's kindy teacher, friend used to work in his restaurant, in my punting days used to spend most Saturdays where he used to punt, son also played footy for the same club as my boys)

Scott Hill
(kids used to go my kids school)

Kerrod Walters
(Kids played footy for the same club as my boys)

Billy Moore
(once told bouncers not to let me in after a NSW origin win where I was yelling BLUES BLUES BLUES!!! at him from outside an Irish pub in the line 😄)

I went to school with Darren Albert (he was school captain when i was in year 7) John Morris was the year above me, Dane Tilse and Todd Lowrie were the year below. Also went to school with Cochise but we don't remember each other.

Lol, only just caught this post. I managed to play with both Darren Albert and John Morris. I was in year 10 in 1994 and played in the really good commonwealth bank cup side we had, I came off the bench in a couple of games. I left school after that and returned 12 months later and when I was in year 12 in 1997 I played 5/8th outside John Morris until he moved to the knights.
