FYI Cronulla and Gold Coast Game Betting Cancelled

Geez Cronulla finally have a great roster and the best shot in their 40 odd year history to win the comp and now this happens! I kinda feel sorry for them ….. nah, not really  Maybe we can get all our players back!

Cronulla Sharks linked to ASADA investigation

Several players and officials from NRL Club Cronulla Sharks are being interviewed by anti-doping authorities as ASADA investigations are stepped-up.

Daily Telegraph reporter Dean Ritchie told Tom Elliott the Sharks reportedly have connections to former AFL sports scientist Stephen Dank, who was stood down by the Essendon Football Club last month.

PLAY: NRL 360's Paul Kent says this is the worst thing for the NRL to face before season kick-off

"This story has been developing through the day but it has to do with the Sharks in 2011 when they briefly employed Stephen Dank," Ritchie said.

"Initially there were reports six players have been interviewed but now we're hearing there are more."

Earlier, Tom Elliott reported he heard rumours up to 14 players from a Sydney NRL team will be stood down by ASADA.

It is unclear whether the alleged comment by ASADA was just an idle threat.

"If I were in Cronulla's shoes, I'd say show us the evidence. Prove it, otherwise we're not standing down," Dean Ritchie added.

The club declined to comment and reportedly called an emergency board meeting on Wednesday afternoon.

Betting agencies have also suspended betting on this weekend's Sharks-Titans match.

ASADA told 3AW off-air no announcements will be made today.

Dean Ritchie is an idiot. He's been listening to Phil Rothfield again. It is Cronulla's interests to co-operate with the authorities in the long run.

Surely any player from the Sharks 2011 roster is under investigation - including Smith and Snowden who were both at the Sharks in 2011 - could be a little pressure on Newcastle.

Rotfield just tweeted that he's heard that 6 players named for the match against the Titans have been offered 6 month suspensions should they come forward now. Given its the Sharks, i doubt he'd get involved in any negativity if it wasn't the truth

Hope you're enjoying the karma you effing grub. Maybe now he won't have as much time to continuously throw mud and defame Marshall's character at every oppurtunity

All the people that had a shot at1/4 chicken chips should now enjoy the stench of rotten eggs on their faces now about the Cronulla thread a couple of weeks ago

Warned you all it was just a matter of the powers that be getting all their ducks lined up

This will be as big as the Storm scandal once it is all said and done

As I recall his whole post consisted of "stay tuned for big news re Cronulla". Anyway as you suggest this is just the start. I'd be pretty concerned if I was a player at another Sydney-based club.

Pulling this stunt at such a time stinks.
If it is true that the players at the time were told they were acting within the rules, surely there are much better ways of dealing with this issue rather than the way it is being done now .
It seems the asda (or whoever they are) are maximising their profile at the expense of the nrl, as a fan I think it sucks

Well for starters it is not a stunt. ASADA's role is to investigate these very matters. It can't really factor the calendar of the organisations linked to the people they are the investigating. Would you not charge an Olympic athlete because the games were about to start? If anything the move before the season makes more sense.

The question of whether they were acting in the rules in debatable. Just because it wasn't on WADA's list of banned substances doesn't mean that's where it ends. Injecting gear meant for horses or with restricted useage no doubt falls under other categories relating to the conduct of NRL players.

ASADA don't need to maximise their profile. What they may be interested in is sending a warning to other pro sports athletes (particular those involved in domestic competitions) that they are being watched.

To suggest the players are innocent victims is, IMO, a stretch (no pun intended!).

To be fair Stretch, it's in NRL's best interests to investigate these claims as soon and thoroughly as possible.

Timing is inopportune for the NRL, however, ASADA are essentially protecting the integrity of the game by weeding out people/clubs who are not playing by the rules by taking banned substances.

Rubbish, they need to strip premeirships for that to happen.

A certain player that was "stood down" by his club last week perhaps? IMO this player just vanishing from the NRL and the accompanying public eye just may be his and his club's way of voluntarily sitting out of the game for 6 months (as some Sharks players have reportedly been asked to do as well) instead of risking the maximum 2 year ban if caught out by investigations.
I mean, cmon, excessive alcohol, partying + gambling hardly equals a good recipe for winning the NRL's highest individual honour.

Will be interesting to see how the whole soap opera plays out.

I heard on radio last night that if a certain forward accepted the 6 months ban the Cronulla club would compensate him for lost representative income.Assuming its the 'poor' player everyone thinks it is it would explain his AJ type boundless energy during games over the past couple of seasons.I agree with previous posts that there is a lot more to unfold in this saga and will involve more clubs. My 2c take on it all.

I had not put that together. Makes sence when you think about…wellmore sence the dropping the face of the NRL because of booze ( NRL sponsor) and gambling ( NRL sponsor). You may be on to something.
