NRL and rugby league in general have the least balls of any officials in any sport. They quake in their boots when faced with the prospect of punishing a top level player (Josh McGuire, Billy Slater), yet jump at the chance to make a "statement" when some nobody does something bad (Hudson Young, Charlie Gubb).

It's actually disgusting. They banned fighting because it "stops mums letting their kids play rugby league". This type of stuff is 100x worse. There's no way I'd let my kid play rugby league if eye gouging was common practice.

Watching it again I tend to agree. Not sure it was an old school gouge, but a result of the crap wrestling techniques that are now an ingrained part of the game.
Find the head, grab it or get leverage and exert pressure to restrict movement and slow the play the ball down. I think the action would have been the same if Farah was face down and the hand was on the back of his head.
He got the face, and more importantly the eye, and will likely pay the price.

Ok, I guess there is a technical difference in calling it a gouge. No, he didn't try to spoon his eyeball out, but my word, he did all he could to poke it into the back of his skull. Probably a worse act. Without question he reached for it, he had intent and Farah had absolutely no defence.
