Galloway determined to silence critics

Keith Galloway knows the doubters exist. He knows that many critics have all but written the Wests Tigers off as a top-eight contender this season once again.

And the former Australian international is out to prove them all wrong in 2014.

“I think it’s good that nobody really rates us this year,” said Galloway during the week.

“I remember a couple of years ago we’d made the semis two years in a row and heaps of people had tipped us to the win the competition, so there was a heap of media and pressure on us — look how that turned out.

"I suppose now the media don’t really expect us to go well this year, so it’s actually a good thing for the club to use to use this year."

“A lot of guys here have some points to prove after last season,” he said.

Galloway includes himself in that list after failing to pick up regular first-team action last year due to a string of injuries. A torn pectoral muscle in just the second week of the year hampered him for a large portion of the season, before a toe injury at the latter part of the year saw him miss the chance to play for Scotland in the 2013 Rugby World Cup.

The good news, though, is that the powering forward on the mend, and is using his frustration of not playing last season to spur him on to a quick recovery.

“It’s been pretty hard going through recovery, it was particularly frustrating before Christmas because there wasn’t much I could do,” recalls Galloway.

“I’ve had a bit of a run with injuries over the past couple of years but fingers crossed everything’s sweet now, I’ve been running about a month now [after having toe surgery], and I’m really looking forward to starting the year as soon as I can.”

At 28, the former Australian Schoolboy might not seem as a veteran in the eyes of many, but especially in a young Wests Tigers squad, Galloway is easily one of the more experienced players, having made over 130 appearances for the club since joining in 2006\. Throw in three seasons at Cronulla and Galloway is suddenly in his 11th year of NRL football, a career that has also included State of Origin and Australian international appearances.

Galloway understands how important his role in the squad is working alongside younger forwards such Nathan Brown and even Aaron Woods, and relishes the chance to do so.

“I suppose I’ve got a fair bit of experience, this being my 11th year playing in the NRL,” he said. “If any of them [the younger forwards] need any tips or pointers or any help with their game, us older blokes are always there to help them out.”

Yet the relationship is far from a one-way street according to Galloway, who spoke of how important the young guys are in spurring him and the whole team on towards success.

“I get a lot out of the young guys as well, they’re very enthusiastic and they pick us old fellas up when we need it. Everyone gets along well here and we all train hard together.”

“It’s a very enthusiastic squad, so I think we’ll go pretty well this year.

What a huge benefit to all at the WT if Sauce can play the year injury free and on fire. Bring on 2014.

I really hope he stays on the field, he is a terrific forward and if he and Woods lead the way we are in good shape.

Make or break yr for the big fella. Not that he's off contract or anything, but i'm worried about him being beaten and broken down. Needs to have a strong yr.

If Keefy can play 20 games in regular season there is no reason why we can't make a decent run for semis football

Whats your favourite Keith Galloway nickname He has enough of them

Mine is Keefy

And you have to pronounce it like you were Mick Jagger speaking for effect

Even better every time he touches the ball we should all scream "KEEFY" to pump him up

me too. I like the guy but i think if he gets 3 in a row it would be a success for this guy at the moment. If Galloway is 'determined to silence critics' …...how about staying on the park big fella, might go a fair way to silencing the critics.

The only problem I have is he just can,t stay on the field and with that comes no benefit ,it is a must that your top flight players stay on the paddock for the majority of the season.

I spoke to big Keith the other night and he said he is almost certain to be back for round 1 possibly coming off the bench. When him and Woods are on the field, we have much better go forward and defence.
No injuries for him and Woods this year and it will make all the difference this season.
I wish him all the best for 2014.

I like the idea of rotations woods and Galloway to have consistent go forward… Taupau and gavett rotating give a bit of X factor in this equation as well...

I'm really hoping that this forward pack can make a few reporters eat their words... Especially Ben ikin... He has ranked us as 16th this year.

I would like to see Wests Tigers achieve the "almost" impossible feat (according to most critics) we are going to fail miserably this season

So we are the underdogs. If we can get off to a great start hopefully keep the injuries low, keep a low profile - and play at our best each and every game, we will silence these critics. Go Tigers :sign:

I can't believe he is only 28\. Feels like he has been around forever and he looks about 38 !!!

Love to see him stay fit and on the field. I take him most games as first try scorer because he pays about 1000/1.

I have, and always will be, a staunch fan of Galloway.
He doesn't do anything flashy or have "good speed for a bloke his size", he's just a classic bulldozer-like prop who makes consistent meters and is solid in defense.
Back in 2012, as soon as we lost Galloway to injury I said to my mate that we were screwed.
We didn't win a single game in 2012 without Galloway, and his lack of presence in 2013 probably contributed to our horror season.

He is damn unlucky with the injuries but I have a feeling he will have a good run this year. I'm totally agree with him, its a good thing the critics aren't giving us a chance as it takes the pressure off us.

I totally agree. He is solid without being flashy. A key player in the team.

The reality is Galloway is one of many of our highest paid players who for whatever reason have contributed extremely little in recent years, the sole exception being Farah..
Throw in Blair,Moltzen,Lawrence,Anasta,Benji,Lote..& youve got almost half our salary cap idling away achieving very little in a team desperately seeking leaders & impact players-what theyre paid the $$$ to do..
In fairness to some, unfortunate but ongoing injuries have been the main factor…others were simply past their best -by date,& others again should never have been bought on any particular date!
Galloway has demonstrated throughout his career that he is extremely injury prone,& whilst I hope he can turn this around,Im quite surprised with his track record that we'd sign him for another 3 years expecting this to change.
Personally think the Tapous & Gavets & pattersons will make a greater than him both this season & going forward unless Galloway somehow manages to get his body more resilient.

Joined WT in 2006 & has played 132 games in 8 years-thats about 16-17 games average per season in 26 rounds .Add trials plus Foundation Cups etc etc-he's playing at little more than 50 % of games eligable.
Not a great advertisement for his endurance.
Hope it can change,but…
