Good news on Leichhardt Oval

With apologies for the 'essay post'…

While WT are struggling on the field at least, I see this as a sensible decision to keep many fans entertained and even encourage some new supporters - but maybe for less tangible reasons that aren’t regularly discussed on this forum. From a personal perspective, I can’t wait for my now 18 month old son to stand with me on the hill amongst the other families on a Sunday afternoon. Would I be as excited about taking him to see a game at ANZ? It’s unlikely, no matter how the team performs. I’m looking forward to (hopefully) celebrating there with him and indoctrinating a life-long WT fan.

But the best example I have is with 4 friends who at the start of this season had absolutely no interest in Rugby League, but despite that I convinced them to come with me to Leichhardt Oval. It wasn't to see a team "that wins", nor the best lineup of players in the game. It was because of my stories of what is unique about Leichhardt Oval: forcing traffic to wait while you cross the motorway with rowdy fans; arguing the health repercussions of buying a hot dog on Mary St; having no choice for beer (just the can it comes in); standing shoulder-to-shoulder with opposition supporters; shouting at your team and knowing they can hear every word. This is what convinced my friends to come to a League game for the first time in their lives. And they loved it, regardless of the outcome on the field. They've spent cash on tickets, merchandise and at the ground and have returned to experience that again.

I appreciate that we all want to follow a team that is enjoying success (both on the ladder and financially), and I can see the appeal of the short-term cash injection that comes from ANZ. In the meantime though, I think there are still a lot of people out there that are attracted by the experience that only a suburban ground can give and this is a strength for the Club (whether that is at Leichhardt or Campelltown). Often these people are families or those with only a casual interest in the game - both groups I see as being important supporters for WT long-term future.

You're absolutely right. My point is that LO and CSS may be worth something financially to WT, albeit in a way that is much more difficult to measure than the $100k figure from ANZ that we see wheeled out all the time.

Yeah let's throw away 400-600k in guaranteed Income for rusted on fans…1 game at each is sufficient...

I'm torn on this post and this subject.

Reminder, I don't currently go to games, my 5 kids are too young…. When I did it was Homebush or SFS for convenience sake.

What the AFL is doing better is the old adage 'PUT THE FAN AT THE CENTER OF EVERYTHING WE DO" .

Do we go with the Dollars and earn desperately needed funds or do we continue to build on what is one of our clubs strengths in that we have two geographical fan bases and a ton of fans in between.

I am neither CSS or LO, I am Wests Tigers.

Start looking for another club to support as the Weststigers are finished

Snake if the WTs are finished and gone,I wouldn't bother following any other team..Why do you ask ?…I have followed Balmain all my life until the JV and WESTS were one of my other favourite teams, the reason I followed the WESTS Maggies as well is because of two reasons...
1.. Newtown were demoted and I lived in Newtown when I studied in Sydney...
2..I have a friend who played for the Maggies in the eighthies...

So for me the NRL can go and ( you know what)...

I'm so over the garbage that goes on regarding, inferior management, cap rorting, brown paper bags full of cash,CEOs who can't comprehend the alphabet let alone a multi million dollar business and players who can't play to their pay packet or their hype.... :rant

I welcome the boards decision to continue with our traditional grounds. Players and fans love the suburban/grass roots aspect of our game …...long may it continue

If the Tigers go or relocate that's it for me. No more NRL. Further to that I would probably say my entire family would be the same and never watch a game again. If it happens the NRL can go you know what themselves!

Has anyone considered that ANZ maybe only want the 5-6 marquee games??

Do they want to be giving the Tigers money to play in front of 6000 against the Titans or Raiders?

They're losing the swans this year so you'd think they would want as many events as possible.

Your presuming.

Just saying its easy to blame the club, but maybe ANZ only want the marquee games against Souths, Dogs, Eels, Roosters..

We don't know really. Would it be in their interests to pay us 75K for matches against the Gold Coast or Penrith that could attract sub 10K?

We haven't won a game at Leichhardt this year and have have turned in some shocking performances there. I have no issue if we leave the place for guaranteed income at Homebush.

Your presuming aswell.
If this was the case, one of our current or previous officials would have come and said that we can't go fulltime at ANZ because they don't want us. They've been copping it for years about ground allocation, i can't believe they wouldn't have justified their decision by know.

Apparently the money isn't there anymore Willow!!!

The Dogs going back to Belmore seem to be doing alright out of nostalgia… 😱pen_mouth:

They hadn't played there for something like 17 yrs which ensures they'll pack the place. And even if they don't then they're only playing a couple of games and are in a much stronger financial position to be able to afford whatever loss they might incur.

I'd also presume that ANZ would love to have 3 fulltime tenants to help them receive a large portion of the government funding. Would that be a fair presumption?

For every 1 person that favours a full time move to ANZ there are 3 that prefer to play some at the traditional grounds. I am not saying it is right to stay at these grounds by the way. However maybe with the club on the nose move then ever with fans maybe they are worried about further membership, sponsor loss by disengaging a big percentage of their fan base further.

Im sure there is more too it then just nostalga.

The point is - if you are winning the crowds are there (they come out of the woodwork).

Then it doesn't matter where you play.
We still had 14000 at the Penriff game at LO - if we were winning it would have been close the gates. It would be similar at Campbelltown.

We just have to ride the storm (especially next week).
