We were soft in defence then ...we aren't much better now ...but we were bad then

I had a bit of a memory flashback about the way the game was played and the evolution and changes of the rules of the game...some of you oldies like me that played the game back in the days such as the eighties should remember some of the core basics of the game back then that were an evryday part of the game..for example ladies and gents...
* place your foot on the ball and play it back to the dummy half...failure to do so,a scrum would be packed with the opposition getting the feed..
* during the play the ball if you are unmarked you may place the ball on the ground tap it forward.regather and continue running until tackled.
* never run behind your teammates,it was called a shepherd and a penalty would be given to the opposition.
* the ball always had to travel backwards when passing, anything that even appeared to be flat the ref would pack a scrum deeming the pass a forward pass.
* when tackling.around the legs, the midsection and chest were deemed legal tackles anything at shoulders or above were deemed illegal tackles...
* when you had to sit on the bench and used as a replacement and ran out of replacements that was it,no unlimited interchange.
* questioning the ref was only a captains job, other players back chatting or questioning ref would result in a send off if the ref saw fit,no sin binning and you had to face judiciary, suspensions were given depending on the result of the findings..

these are just some of the things that have changed, in my opinion for better or worse I don't know, but we had to follow the rule stringently and we were coached and disciplined to these rules..the modern game has changed and is a much faster game than back then...but Im glad I played at the time I did,it was hard but fair and if you had to face the judiciary it was probably your own fault, there was no one else to blame, rules are rules in any game...
Have other people got some changes and old game rules they remember....

Im sure Happy is about to get into it....

Didn't watch too many Wests v Manly games in the 70's I take it..

Anything below the head was deemed illegal...

Can't run without heads was the catchphrase

I don't know what the judiciary in their games would do but we were told by the ref when we lined up before kickoff...anything at shoulder height or above is deemed dangerous and send off would more than likely be the result..

I know in the old Winfield cup days some of the blokes got away with murder so to speak...some didn't either...

Jim was the best person to lead the judiciary he certainly cleaned football up a lot.We need someone with his attitude in Greenbergs position,i am sure the favouritism nonsense and misuse of money wouldnt have happened if he was in charge

Do you mean double knock on or double knock play the ball....
double knock on would result in a scrum with the feed to the opposition..
double knock play the ball also resulted in a scrum with the feed to the opposition..
hope that helps gallager...

I thought I remembered that if Wests knocked on then a manly picking up the ball knocked it on with west regathering it was play on.

It may have been,I only vaguely remember it may have nullified the advantage and went back to Wests as Manly lost the advantage...therefore play on,however this is now what they call a double knock on with a scrum being played and the feed goes to Manly..

If Wests knocked on the ball and Manly picked it up and ran down field or passed it a few times and the ref thought Manly had enough advantage, then they dropped it, wests could pick up the ball and play on.... Manly had the ball and lost it after gaining an advantage so play on. Hope this makes sense.

Yeah, thats the rule these days. For some reason I thought no advantage was needed for a while back in the late 80s. Probably got it wrong. Cheers guys.

Trying to explain this using Wests and Manly players is so confusing. Aren’t Wests and manly players one and the same?
Sorry
Too soon?

Thought it was too close to the bone. All in good fun.

Seriously though - I find I read stories of the past from the guys and gals on here who followed the Magpies and I feel a real connection now. I’m interested in the Magpies history as much as Balmains. I think that’s a good thing. And don’t worry, I hate manly too - just not as much as you, yet.

I'm lucky..As I have stated many times ..I hate all other teams...it's just varying degrees ..funnily enough Balmain was the team I hated the least..go figure..I think it was because players like Garry Jack ..Mick Neil..Brett and Scotty Gale even Ross Conlon went to them..and it wasn't the dog poaching Manly did..that was just footy..
