Grant Meyer: A letter to the Wests Tigers Members

Dear Members,
Benji Marshall last night requested a release from the remaining two years of his Wests Tigers contract.
We are surprised and disappointed that Benji has made this decision, but we accept and respect the decision that he has made.
We believe as a Club we made a fair and reasonable offer to upgrade Benji's contract, an offer which was not insignificant and one which we believed he would accept.
Wests Tigers and the NRL have worked over time to ensure Benji remained with the Club and in the game of Rugby League.
Benji and his manager have today stated that this decision is not about money.
Benji has given over a decade of loyal service to the Club and was instrumental in building the Wests Tigers and delivering our maiden premiership.
We must now respect his decision to move on with his career and do what he feels is best for himself and for his family.
As a Club, we now have the opportunity to re-sign and build our future around a genuinely exciting core of talented young players.
The likes of Luke Brooks, Mitchell Moses, Marika Koroibete, David Nofoaluma, Tim Simona and Kyle Lovett, amongst a host of other highly skilled youngsters are the future of this Club.
This Club has the potential to be a top four side year-in, year-out. We are putting in place the systems necessary to ensure this happens.
While we would have loved Benji Marshall to be a part of that process, it now appears this will not be the case and we need to move forward together, as a Club.
Although many of you are disappointed today, I encourage you to remain positive and put your faith in this Club that we love.
We need our Members to remain committed and loyal as we work to ensure we build the successful Club you deserve.
There are bright days ahead for the Wests Tigers and we are working not only to ensure we claim our second Premiership but also that we lay the foundations for a consistently successful Club.
We hope you will join us in celebrating Benji Marshall's 200th match for the Club when we take on South Sydney at Allianz Stadium in Round 25.
This will be a chance to acknowledge the wonderful legacy Benji leaves this Club with and a chance to remember the special moments he provided.
I thank you for your continued support. Membership is now the lifeblood of NRL clubs and without you, we cannot become the Club we want to become.
We hope to see you at Leichhardt Oval on Friday night as we look to continue our unbeaten record at the ground in 2013 when we take on the Warriors.

Thoughts?

200 at his last home game…wow...hope he doesnt get injured before that, would be a great send off for him.

Thoughts on the statement?
All class from Mayer and the club, well done...too bad Tauber couldnt find half that class

His points about the members being commited and loyal, along with the fact that the future looking bright, moving towards a second premiership and a club that us, the fans, deserve, shows what is happening with the club. Big makeover with the coach and the playing staff, moving forwards with youngsters, towards another premiership and consistent football hopefully!

He is speaking as though the board will accept Benjis request - a mere formality i would imagine. Its a shame Mayer wasn't a candidate at the time Humphreys was appointed - would be interesting to see where the club would be nowhave been now.

x2
We have made some interesting and strange decisions as a club in recent years but making Grant Meyer our new CEO is an absolute must!

I feel for the first time in the clubs history Wests Tigers got out in front of an issue and have dealt with it professionally and come out looking really good

Yeah it does sound that way, Well if he is going to Union the release is irrelevant.

Shame though that it had to come on the back of complete incompetence across the whole administration that got us into the position.

I'm pretty optimistic we are coming through it though.

Results might be stagnant for the while but I really like the direction we are going on and off field. Potter/Mayer have impressed beyond what I could have hoped.

Listening to Mayer on the radio and watching him on TV, you can't help but be impressed by the way he has handled this situation.

Tauber on the other hand came across as an ignorant old fool on channel 9 when spoken to by Weidler.

I'm glad you are all so impressed ….. It all sounds akin to a speech made by a politician to win over the party faithful to me. We have just lost the best player the Wests Tigers have had .... Sorry I can't bring myself to be happy about all the rhetoric that goes with it.

He was offered a very very good deal….HE chose to leave.

WE didnt lose him,,,,HE left

No player is bigger than the club, Tauber and Marshall have just discovered this.

And how would you rate Benji's performance over the last 18 months?

Worth top dollar marquee money?

My two cents:

I am a Marshall fan. He carried this side from 2009 to 2011\. Without him we dont win in 2005 and become a competitive side out of the Lamb era rabble. Marshall has done more on the football field than any player I have seen. I still think he has the ability to get back to top form.

That being said, the club is entitled to make a decision about how much they feel he is worth balancing up the demands of the salary cap. In fact, professionalism demands such an approach.

Change and replenishment is good. I am looking forward to seeing some young guys - whether it is Moses, Brooks or some guy from left field - come in and show a whole new bag of tricks.

Carn the Tigers.

Very selective there Ink …. No mention of the issues with Potter in your assessment above.
Anyway you got your way .... Again !
Last year you advocated a change in the head coach as a remedy and the last time I checked the team is still running closer to last than first. And now your all over a silver tail blow in spruiking all the rhetoric that goes with a new incumbent trying to make an impression.

Oh well, lets see what happens from here. Whether all the "stars" in the kiddies cup fill the void or whether we just dig ourselves a hole the size of Parramatta. And as we know from our experience of 1983 onwards its a hole that takes an eternity to get out of .... If your lucky enough to get out of it all that is.
