Grothe Quits

From the SMH:

Eric Grothe quits rugby league.

Parramatta have lost one of their most famous names with Eric Grothe announcing his retirement from the NRL on Monday.

The 30-year-old, son of 80s legend Eric Grothe senior, will not fulfill his one-year contract with the club in 2011 following a long rehabilitation from a knee injury.

The former Australian and NSW Origin representative said he was ready to move on with his life.

Advertisement: Story continues below "I'm going to miss the club and especially the boys, but I feel it is the right time to move on," he said.

"I've had many injuries throughout my career and it's getting harder to recover from them. I loved my many years at Parra but I have other things I want to concentrate on now."

Grothe made his debut with the Eels in 1999 against North Queensland. He joined the Sydney Roosters in 2002 before rejoining the Eels in 2004.

The Eagle Vale junior made his representative debut in 2005, playing for City and Australia in the same season. In 2006 he played all three Origins for NSW.

The talented winger played 142 NRL games and scored 268 points from 67 tries.

He will now concentrate on his personal training business and music and TV career.

They've signed former Manly winger Chris Hicks as well. They have an average age of 30+ for their top three flyers in Hicks, Burt & Walker.

Gentlemen, start your zimmer frames!!!

Well and truly beyond his best.

If his surname was anything else I doubt he would have made FG.

More $$$ freed up @ Parra

Doesn't matter how much cash they have, there are huge problems there which makes them unable to attract top players.

Poor old Parra are really struggling. They've got their work cut out with Carl Webb too. I walked past him, or rather around him yesterday and he's got a stomach Homer Simpson would be proud of.

Kearney probably wouldn't let his band practice at training

^ This.

He has never made it a secret that he is a musician who plays league and not the other way around. Even his old boy got up him a few seasons back, telling him to put the guitar down if he wants to be serious about his footy.

I disagree. Trouble follows Thurston, he and Parra would have been a match made in heaven.

This is an obvious case of Grothe having his gold-card revoked by Kearney and refusing to do the required training load!

His TV career - please!!!

Is this his second retirement?
He was hardly setting the world on fire. Best thing Kearney can do is the get rid of some of the more long-term players out at Parra and mould his own team. Good attacking player but dubious when it came to reading attacks when defending.

Oh well good luck with the music. I'll create a space next to my Jason Martin CD for his next release…

Yeah that's him. Released a song called "Taking it to the top" or something along those lines. It was awful…
