Has Benji overtaken Robbie?

Since 2006 imo Robbie Farah has really carried this team. In fact I’d go as far to say that he stopped us getting one or two wooden spoons. Sure other players have been great and on some occasions stepped up and played a big part in us winning a game, however chances are if the Wests Tigers won a game in the last 4 years, R Farah was the man of the match.

His partner in crime Benji Marshall was high profile and flashy, however very inconsistent. Quiet often for every try he set up he would also throw a pass over the sideline, for every break he made he would get caught on the fifth tackle with ball in hand following a nothing play. Sure when he was on he was probably the best player in the game. Sometimes just a 20 minute spurt of Marshall brilliance was enough to get us home. Trouble was we would only see this 5 or 6 times a year. When we won Benji would usually get the deadlines, however ask any Tigers fan who got us home and they'll all tell you it was Farah.

From the second half of last year I feel as though the dynamics in our team changed. Farah, whilst still being the conductor behind everything we did, stepped back a little bit from the flashyness and Benji really took over. IMO 2009 was Benji’s best year in first grade, including 2005\. This year he has started the same way. Benji’s ball playing on Monday night was sensational, he was always hitting the right man. The pass to Fulton for Lawrences try was unreal, it couldn’t have been anymore perfect.

I feel as though Benji is finally realising his true potential and has now over taken Farah as our number 1 player. This is taking nothing away from Farah, who is still playing great and imo is the games best 9\. It’s more that Benji has gone to another level, not that Farah is playing any worse.

What are everybody else’s thoughts?

Agreed
Benji's finally had enough games on the trot to get to where he could have been in '06 but for injuries. (& touch wood he doesn't have any more major disruptions to what will be a stellar rest of his career).
Still needs to work on his kicking and organising but he's now one of the top 3 or 4 in the game IMO.

Robbie's back has been a big problem for him over the last season or 2 I think but hopefully he's back to his best this season & we'll see him step right back up too.

Agreed Benji had a good year last year and is well on his way to acheiving the consistant success that many would have hoped would have followed after 2005.
I do however think that robbie still has his nose infront only for the fact that he has his hand in everything for the full 80 minutes in both attack and defence
Benji can still go very quiet at times in games and hardly touch the ball for a set or two, especially if we are on the back foot.
Having said that when he does re-inject himself back nto the game he usually pulls off something phenomenal and turns the momentum back our way.

Not yet.
Farah rates about 8/10 for taking correct options each game.
Marshall about 6/10.
Defensively Marshall has come on as a pretty tough hard hitting tackler.

this is his year, this is his time to stamp his authority hes 25 and is at the age where andrew johns stamped his authority on games and stepped up to be one of the GOATS if not the GOAT.

i expect benji to do the same, we can all see the talent and over last year and round 1 this year he has really stepped up as the leader of this team, and its a positive that he has over-taken robbie but he is by no means streaks ahead of him, IMO neither could do as good with out each other doing what the other does

they are both great and form the best 1 - 2 punch in the nrl

Are you basing this on one game? I feel they are cogs in the same wheel who are lesser without each other.

Imo it isn't even close at this point. Benji could be the best player in the game right now.

Robbie hasn't kicked on since 07 - I think he has gone backwards. Maybe it is injuries - I'm not sure.

I would love to see them both fire this year as the truth is they both still have a bit to prove.

farah was second in the dally m votes last year, so you theory on that he hasnt improved since 07 is slightly flawed, alson all his stats from last year were up from his previous years so again to say he hasnt improved is dumb.

IMO everyone around robbie has improved and thus you dont notice how much he stands out as opposed to a few years back

With an injury free run under his belt, the gap has certainly closed between Robbie and Benji. I believe Benji at his best has more of an impact in changing a game however at the end of the day I feel Robbie and Benji complement each other nicely, throw Moltzen and Lui into the mix and it's a very potent 1,6,7,9 which is what the Tigers need.

I disagree, I still think robbie is a more vital player. Tigers can win without benji but we can't win without farah. If they both play every game this year like they did last week then yes benji will overtake him.

If i was going into a big game 2morro, and i had to choose between Benji and Robbie to have in the side, i'd pick Benji.

X 2…ATM...

I've always maintained if Farah and Marshall can sync their best look out.....unstoppable...

Prime for Prime....I'd go Farah.....

Yeh agree, prime for prime Farah, but ATM Marshall. But im still hoping we're yet to see the "prime" Farah. Im hoping we see it late 2010.

I'd take Robbie, every time. I think we can win games without Benji. I have my doubts that we can win without Robbie.

Regarding week to week games i agree with your last line, but i think when it comes to the real big games, Benji is the one who steps up.

both are top 15 players in the league imo,as for whos better its doesnt really matter cause we have them both

though lawrence is catching them both imo

No.
Team without Benji - loses attacking flair, and the making something out of nothing spark.
Team without Robbie - loses direction across the park.

We win more games because of Robbie but Benji is starting to show the consistency required to not only be our best but one of the best in the world.
