Hayne snubbed, eight others in World Team of the year

THREE British forwards have been named - but Jarryd Hayne was overlooked - in a World XIII selected by a leading English rugby league magazine.

Rugby League World named Pommy forwards Sam Burgess, Gareth Ellis and James Graham in its side, but Hayne, the Dally M Medal winner, was omitted. Australian props Petero Civoniceva and Ben Hannant missed out, as did Nathan Hindmarsh and Paul Gallen.

In fact, only two Australian forwards - Anthony Watmough and Cameron Smith - were selected. Melbourne's Billy Slater was chosen at fullback with Brett Morris and Taniela Tuiaki on the wings. Michael Jennings edged out Justin Hodges at centre.

Former Test players Wally Lewis, Hugh McGahan and Garry Schofield - along with representatives of rugby league media - picked the side. The Daily Telegraph was given a vote.

great to the tank get a spot as he had an awesome year for us and i really hope his injury does not stop those powerful runs over the top of opposition players

I never thought that Taniela would have amounted to much more than an average player…He sure proved me wrong...Thanks mate...

The poms still think very highly of Lockyer, so much so I think they think he is still a better player then what we think.

But when you add Wally Lewis to the selection panel it doesnt really come as a big surprise to me.

Soward was the best 5/8 in the world this year, but didn't get the gig because Heather held him out of the test team. As soon as D Lock retires from international footy, Soward will be the Aussie 5/8, and probably regarded as the best in the world.

Lockyer has struggled the last couple of years but definately is a game breaker… Soward did have a good year but for him to be considered the best in the world wen Lockyer retires is a bit of a gee up

Totally agree Mystery….just because he went well in 1st grade does in no way mean he is the best in the world.

Locky still plays well at rep level, soward is unproven.

Probably worded that poorly. Soward would be regarded as the best 5/8 in the world. He should get a gig for NSW in 2010, and I think he'll go well. When Lockyer stands down, he will probably be pushed into the Australian side (who else is there, apart from JT at 6 and Prince/Cronk at 7), and with all the players around him, he will look like a world beater, and will probably be regarded as the best. I guess it depends on how he goes in 2010, and if he gets his origin gig or not. But in 2009 he was easily the best 5/8 in the NRL, and probably one of the top 5 players.

Ohok yeah sorry thought u meant best player in the world… Even though i think either Prince, Carney or Bird will slot into that 5/8 role when Lockyer leaves... A Halves pairing of Carney and Bird with the addition of Tahu in the NSW backline could go close to matching the QLD backline
