Heath Mason #288

Just seems like one of those players that is between all positions. Great athlete but not tall enough for the backs, gifted enough for the halves or big enough for the forwards. We already have too many 14s though, Bird etc but he might be best value as a 14 type benchy in the mould of Kapow Halatau. Come off the bench to cover injuries in the backs/halves or a 15 min mighty mouse stint. Dunno, I reckon SL might be where he will fit in best.

so continue to develop in the lower grades ? This is like the third time today I’ve seen someone say to put him at 6
Personally I think he’s some ways off being an NRL 6. His junior background I believe is in the halves but I’d have doubts he’s there even in attack/organisation for first grade and his defence certainly isn’t. I’d put him in the good prospect rather than prodigy class.

I’d much rather see him grow into the role for the Magpies.

well we know he seems to be a elite tackle buster at cup level top 4 and hes played 1 game less than the top 2 and hes only 19
i would love to see him given a go at 6 i think he would surprise everyone

Yeah if we’re gunna do that we need to give him some time at 6 in cup. He’s not a FB. Can he learn the 7 role? He seems like a kid who wants to learn and be better and I like that. But he’s a ways off nrl and there’s a heap of 6’s here. Although we are down one at the moment. But he could play 6 next to Falls for education and Gal plays centre for cup?
Anyway he seems a good kid, not quite NRL std yet, but one I’m prepared to invest in, maybe not at fb.

Play him at 6 in the KOE if you can. He was the Harold Matts 5/8, so it's not uncommon to him.

His ability to play other positions should be a BENEFIT to him, not a hinderance. He's not a fullback.

He's not the same type of 5/8 as anyone in the club. He's more the Fletcher Sharpe type, without the blinding speed.

Luai, Latu, Doueihi, Bird, Mason with Api & Falls around- we are well covered in the halves still.

He’s quicker than you think, particularly over the first 20-30 metres.

Atm for me Jarome halves pairing, latu first choice, AD second, Jayden Sulliven when he is back 3rd choice. I would say personally Api 4th choice and Mason 5th choice in the halves for me. But if Latu moves to starting halves position, Mason has a good look at a bench utility spot. I think he knows that's his best chance.
