I thought last nights concept was a good one as Balmain and Cronulla featured in many tough contests in the 80s.

For Balmain,good heritage games are against Souths,Cronulla and Canterbury.

But for Wests fans,heritage rounds have been very dissapointing.

This year,the WT wore the Magpies strip during away games in Newcastle and Brisbane.What a failure,almost like saying Wests have no history to promote.

For heritage games representing Western Suburbs the Manly,St george Illawarra and Parramatta games should be heavilly promoted.

This may go some way to addressing the Wests Magpies side of the JV apparent lack of representation in some sections of the media and amongst some ignorant fans.

I've been very critical of the Football Club (Western Suburbs) for not promoting their brand and heritage through the Joint Venture Club. Balmain do it to a tee. And even being an old Magpie, I love seeing the old players they parade around the joint. I love when they run out in the Black & Gold Heritage strip because it shows the Rugby League fratenrity, the Rugby League community that the Football Club still lives and breathes thanks to the Joint Venture. It allows fans and supporters of yesteryear to feel that attachment which connects them to continue their support of Balmain in their new life as 'Wests Tigers'. Western Suburbs on the other hand fail time and time again. Their history is synonymous to any traditional Rugby League club if not greater than most especially being a Founding club. Yet there has never been as much emphasis upon the promotion of their history unlike Balmain. This isn't Wests Tigers fault. I place the blame soley on the Ostriches involved with the Western Suburbs Football club, who would rather pour all their energy into ensuring they can dominate the NSW Cup (Reserve Grade format) rather than to preserve their brand in the elite level of the game, where it can be seen, acknowledged and respected by all in the Rugby League World, rather than a few hundred people every Saturday. It's embarrassing, it's disgraceful and it's a joke.

I thought the Heritage night was ordinary and to be honest, I don't think the club should bother participating in these heritage rounds. It is all too confusing for the younger fans who really don't know Balmain and Western Suburbs.

Saturday night was billed as 80's night, yet they played in jerseys from I don't know when. They were probably from the 60's, but to me, the jerseys reminded me of the awful teams Balmain had in 1998 and 1999\. I think Wests Tigers played in that fashion as well.

I think the club should push into the future and start focussing on its own heritage, not Balmain and Western Suburbs.

One final point, I was at the game (hill) on Saturday and the atmosphere was non-existant. I read in the press and on this forum how the "old lady" is intimidating etc. Apart from about 30 people behind me who chanted "Tigers" on occasions during the match, you could hear a pin drop during the match. To me, it was about as intimidating as an old lady. It was awful.

You're entitled to your point of view but there a hell of a lot of ex-Balmain and ex-Wests fans out there who get enjoyment out of these nights. It's not really hurting anyone and you can't completely erase the past and pretend Wests Tigers was created out of nothing.

As for your final point, can't speak for the hill but the atmosphere was fantastic on the grandstand side. Besides I clearly heard the referee getting a spray from the hill for not going to the video ref on that Sharks try.

I just hope that Penrith is made to wear it's away strip at Campbelltown. Peeves me to see them running around our home ground in black.

As for heritage rounds, if it makes people happy to see a few old Balmian legends trotted around year after year, I have no issue with that. The have used St George matches for the Magpies heritage in the past - i just think they lucked out this year with the draw and who they played at Campbelltown.

Having said that, I personally can't wait for the day when heritage round means rolling out Hodgo, Skando, Galea, Prince, Marshall, Richards etc etc and I can bleat to all who will listen about that memorable night in 2005.

I was on the hill, and I thought the atmosphere was pretty good. Though, im only comparing it to the last game I went to, v Easts at Campbelltown. I havent seen a can of beer fly on to the field for years, and the expletive chant that went up when the ref didnt go to the video was inspirational. I just hope Campbelltown can replicate it when we play Penrith in 2 weeks.

I have to agree. i was on the hill as well on Saturday night and some people even turned and gave people filthies when they tried to get the crowd pumped. the place is a morgue at times. must be something to do with the night air or no sun maybe even the fact the beer ran out AGAIN!!

I think it was just cause it was a Sat, though havent gobne this way before, we usually go via Vic rd but the othe nite was vial Parra Rd and city west link….traffic was a problem.

Yeah I tend to avoid City West like the plague if I can. You're almost better off heading up Norton St and going through Habberfield and even keep going around the back of Concord Oval until you get to Concord Road. Assuming you're heading west of course!

Actaually I was talking about heading in….we came from the west.
Heading home via Vic rd to dundas was the best run ive ever had, and thats with parking in the nuthouse, didnt leave early and didnt get stuck it was brilliant

back on the 80s night....yeah it was a bit odd them wearing the early 1900s imitation jumpers for 80s night. :laughing:

Give the crowd something to cheer and they will!

Two of the their best games were against Gold Coast and the Warriors - otherwise their home games haven't been very entertaining. A win is great and I'm satisfied just to see the team but not everyone is as easy to please as me

going to some Dragons games their army always ensures a fun time with the songs and what not. Whether we're down or not playing very well or playing great we have little besides the 'Tigers' chant to throw out and you can't do that ALL game.

another note, anyone see the guy that got an atomic wedgie from his mates on Saturday night? Over by the pole where the Sharks scored their first try. Classic.

[Agree and we don"t have play heritage rounds at Cambelltown.The stadium is fine and when they ran out in Magpies jumpers against Manly in that great game last year it was great.

As for moving on with a new identity I dissagree.The whole reason that the WT exist is because of Balmain and Wests.

For me,this feels like a new club not Balmain or Wests but with both Balmain and Wests in it.

For the older fans the links with the past must always remain but for younger fans its great to for when they look at history it will add more spice for them knowing the club is real and not just a "consumer creation."quote="magpie mania"]
