How did you become a Wests Tigers fan?

Didn’t follow League until I was taken to see my first game in 1973, I was 9 and it was St George v Balmain at Kogarah (the Dragons won that one), however I lived on Elizabeth Ave opposite the old Wests Leagues Club at Ashfield so I began following the Magpies, went to my first Wests game in 1974 at Penrith Park, we flogged the Panthers 26-8, the grandstand at Penrith Park in 74 was the roof of the toilets, players amenities and kiosk, a few rows of benches around the fence and really not much else, but I loved every second of the day and was well and truly hooked from then on. In late 74 we moved to Park Ave Ashfield behind Pratten Park which was even better as the Magpies played some home games there again in the late 70's.

usta be a parra tragic.I saw my first semi final in 63 when parra played saints.

Ww sat in the sheridan stand and people thumped their feet on the wooden floor and it made an amazing sound.
Was at the 65 grand final and it was so crowded the policemen lifted us over the fence and we sat on the field.Billy Smith scored in front of us.Kevin Longbottom{what a name} kept kicking goals from halfway to keep souths close.

People sat on the top of grandstands.I belive Bob Fulton was one.

I started following wests in some grim orana park times. My destiny was sealed at the game versus Manly when Ian Schubert kicked 8 goals to get the boys home.
the rest is history.
What some people overlook sometimes is that we won the flag in 2005.

There wouldn't be too many people still alive who saw norths win in 1922.

Cronulla have never experienced it .

Savour the good times. For some, they don't come around that often.

I grew up going to Lidcombe Oval and Orana Park to watch the Magpies with my Uncle who is deadset the most passionate Magpie supporter I know. I however, idolised the Balmain pack, in particular Wayne Pearce. Thus took on Balmain as my team, however, I always kept on attending Wests games with my Uncle and cheered them on except when they played Balmain. The merger was a no brainer for me. I was as happy as a pig in …..you know what. My poor old Uncle watches the Magpies still but goes home when they finish and refuses to watch the Wests Tigers.

lol, poor uncle is missing out. I wonder how many other old(ish) supporters did not come across and support the Wests Tigers joint venture. I'd imagine quite a few, yet we are still (possibly) the most popular team in the NRL.

I followed the Newtown Jets as a young kid as it was mum's team. But when their move to Campbelltown failed after building the Eastern Garmdstand at Orana Park, the Newtown Campbelltown Jets died (The Junior rep teams were known as NC Jets), I followed Dad's team, the mighty Balmain Tigers from 1984.

Years later, working and living at Leichhardt and Campbelltown, the merger was a perfect marriage.

A number of reasons really…..Living in Cooma, NSW, I use to go down to the local showground every Saturday to watch my brothers play footy. Back then they were the Cooma Tigers. I think I was about 5 years old. The old man, myself and the entire family were huge Balmain supporters until the merge...Now we all support the Wests Tigers.
My dear Nanna, also a Balmain lady in her day knew Laurie Nichols well. His familty are still around the Cooma region. My Dad often tells Laurie stories, and they never get old.
Begin only down the road from Canberra, people assume we would be raiders supporters, but Cooma has a huge Tigers following...almost every 2nd person you talk to supprt the tigers. I was only about 4 when the 89 grand final was on, so i dont remember the game. Dad has told me bits and pieces and Ive heard the stories from others, and I cant bring myself to watch it. When the boys got up in 2005, I celebrated long and hard. Seeing my old man shed a tear after the victory, i knew how much it meant to him.....It's in my blood....I couldnt imagine supporting another team.

My dad was a bears fan and I was born a bears fan. I followed the bears for the first seventeen years of my life until they unfortunately left the competition.

For quite a few years I hated the game for taking my team from me but I could never stay mad at the greatest game of all.

My mates eventually convinced me to jump ship and it has been the best thing I've ever done. I've been a tigers fan for seven years now and there's no turning back. I never loved the bears this much.

I've even been a member for four years now.

I loved reading all these stories, I reckon you dont pick your footy team it picks you!
especially loved the story about taking the magpies badge cause there was no dragons badges left!

From northern NSW so no obvious team to go for. 1992 regina football cards, still got them all, Balmain tigers pictures were the coolest (to a 6 year old). Thats all it took. Best decision of my life.

My dad rocked up with a mappies size 00 jersey at auburn hospital (down the street to lidcome oval ) the hour I was born… So I kinda have no choice !! I am a born and breed Wests boy and live and die a WESTS TIGER!!

I came over with the family at 11 years old from New Zealand in late 77, met and hung around with a few of the local kids who played league for Five Dock RSL in the Balmain comp so i joined them, they took me to a Tigers game at Leichhardt Oval, I have been hooked on the tigers since then.

In 88 when the Warriors were coming into the comp, i went and bought a cap and was going to become a full time Warriors supporter, went to the sevens tournament at Parramatta Stadium that year, Balmain ran out to play and I realised I couldn't shift my alliegiance and gave my hat away that day to some Maori kid,
cant believe to this day, I was going to go for the warriors.

Still go for the Kiwi side though….....

Go the mighty Dockers. Team with the longest acronym in junior league - the F.D.R.S.L.J.R.L.F.C.

WHAT A TOPIC! Congratulations benji_da_gun on coming up with the idea. I’ve read the lot to date and enjoyed all the stories!
My story starts in 1948 (this is true!), when my Dad took me to Brookvale Oval to see Wests Magpies play Manly. We lived in Auburn and took the train to Ashfield and then a special football bus to Brooky. I played junior football for Auburn, in an era, when Lidcombe had a very good team, because they stole some of the better Auburn players. Dad and I never missed Magpies games or representative games until part-time University got in the way in the late 1950’s.
In 1961, I met my (now) wife, whose family were mad Magpies supporters. Her uncle played first grade five-eight for the Magpies in 1930, when they won the competition and her cousin played first grade half for them in the late 1960’s. We hardly missed a match for years and cried through the 1961, 1962 and 1963 grand finals.
Being a member of Wests Ashfield, my wife and I spent many after match times at the Club with Gil McDougall, Jim Cody, Fred Norden, Rob McGuiness, Peter Dimond and many others. After we were married, we lived in Frederick Street, Ashfield, so Wests Ashfield became our second home.
With the birth of our two sons, the death of my Dad and our first home at Baulkham Hills, we stopped going to matches, but kept cheering for Wests from home.
In 1987, friends of ours bought season tickets to Orana Park, so we started going to matches again. The drive from Campbelltown to Oakville (near Windsor) was very long after losses, but much shorter when Wests had some of their rare wins.
Fortunately, both sons, daughters-in-law and grand-children are all Wests Tigers supporters, which does mean there are few arguments about football in the family. We attend some matches, but the grand-children’s sport and dancing gets in the way on many week-ends.

Always loved the underdog, so when it come to choosing the sporting teams i was going to follow, i chose those that were coming last in their respective comps. Thus me becoming a magpies supporter in Rugby league. Yes wins were few and far between but when they came along, boy did they feel good!! And best of all, all my mates that hassled me because of this are still waiting for their premiership!! Poor Eels fans–--->lol

I didn't grow up in the city and we were also new Australians so I wasn't born into a rugby league tribe, I had to find one. My Dad had spent a few years working in the north of England and had been exposed to rugby league. Out here he became an avid fan of Tommy Bishop in the early Cronulla days and it rubbed off on me. I lost touch with rugby league when we moved out to the western border country of NSW/Victoria and later to Western Australia.

After nearly 30 years living in country devoid of rugby league and ruled by the other code, we finally got Foxtel. By then John Lang was in charge at Cronulla and Preston Campbell had exploded onto the field. Other than my admiration for Presto, I didn't feel really at home with Cronulla. When Anderson & Kimmorley took over the Sharks in 2002 that was the end of Presto and the end of me following the team. I went along with Lang & Preston to Penrith for a year or two but I was also watching the new Wests Tigers. I don't know what or why, but we clicked.

By 2004 I knew I had finally found THE team.

I bought my grandson's one before he was even born (before we even knew he was a 'he'!) and had him wearing it on Saturday - he was born on Friday night. I reckon he was about 12 hours old when he was decked out in his WT gear.

definitely the most enjoyable thread i have read. great to hear the vast array of people with a common spot in the heart for our tigers.
once again, well done OP (BDG) and awesome story mightymaggy.
