No excuses here but…..
If you go well at the start of the game and get the rub of the green - it variably means (this year), that the referees will try to even up the penalties in the later part of the second half.
This on top of unforced errors, the knit picking penalties (especially on your line or strategically placed leg ups to the opposition) means you are going to end up fighting for the two points at the death.
It also applies the opposite way - they get all the help in the first half and we get the catch ups at the end. Of course if they received too much help early - it means we don't quite make it.
Apart from our mistakes (which always hurt us badly), it is all grey areas that are the problem. Holding down too long, crowding in the play the ball, inside the ten on your line and opposition forward passes are just a few. You could give either side a penalty for these but we, most often do not get them. These, plus the bad calls e.g. 40/20 not called on the weekend - all contribute to changing momentum and quite often the result of the game.
These are not excuses but observations that you have all picked up. It is difficult to pile on points when these things are happening. Errors we can fix, missed tackles are harder when the other team are getting 3, 4 or 5 sets on your line just because of evening up. All you can do is make less errors, so completing your sets and then astute kicks to keep pressure on your opposition. Don't pass forward, no back chatting and no stripping penalties. (Not rocket science, not like nobody knows these things)
Then at least you give yourself the best chance of using your attack and winning the game.
What he said X2!! After our dominant start there are momentum killers be it of our own making or dubious ref calls that make the game closer that it could have been. Would be nice to put a side to the sword so we can sit back and relax in the knowledge we have the game in the bag instead of waiting for the refs or ourselves to let the opposition back into the game.
