Interesting article in Campbelltown Advertiser about crowd

My opinion on why there was such a small crowd is due to a number of reasons.

*The Magpies side of the JV being disgruntled with the running of the club. I actually think alot of ex Magpies supporters did not show up.

The treatment of club favourites. Bryce Gibbs, Chris Heighington and Beau Ryan.

*The success of the Wanderers.

*Those complaing about the price of $120 is BS. I attended the game with my wife and 3 kids and it did not cost me $120 includung food and drinks.

I remember we played the Cowboys at Campbelltown last season and we had a poor crowd. I dont want people want? We had Marshall, Farah, Woods and Galloway up against Bowen, Thurston, Scott and Tamou. If you could, why wouldnt you want to watch that live?

We are 2 foundation clubs, with proud histories. We should have 20,000 members. FFS last years wooden spooners have more members than us…

Seriously? Thousands aren't turning up because they're disgruntled about the treatment of the Magpies? What exactly would make them turn up? More games?

We need to have bigger crowds if we want to see more games at our traditional homes.

If this trend continues the club would be better off playing less at those two grounds and taking more guaranteed $$$.

The excuse of opposition speaks more to the attitude of the fanbase who didn't attend then anything else. I would hate to be relying on our completely fickle supporter base as our only income stream, that is for sure

your right Smeg heck last year at Leichhardt only 9000 turned up to watch their beloved tigers play against the world champion Melbourne Storm which was gareth ellis last home game. This has been going on for some time and Im a little surprised Humphreys is coming out now and attacking campbelltown but not Leichhardt a YEAR EARLIER.Who knows why he is saving his abuse for Campbelltown. Anyhow our support currently does seem to be quite fickle.

Wests have the money, Balmain has the fans. System works.

Wests have the money…
And the Juniors,
Half the coaching staff are ex Magpies
And the Leagues Clubs

OUR SIDE OF THE JOINT VENTURE NEEDS TO BE SHOWN MORE RESPECT.
When I was a kid you used to be able to walk down the road from Bradbury to Leumeah and be able to see the likes of Allan Langer and Mal Meninga.

Now we get Lachlan Cootes and Braith Anastas. Kurt Gidley if we are lucky.

So dont get snotty at a hard working westies for getting a bit bored after 7 years of table scraps.

Oh boo hoo.

You reap what you sew Macdougall you started it with your buyist comment so dont have a tiger tantrum when someone responds accordingly.

I've lost a lot of respect and faith in Humphries after that article. Him attempting to point the finger of blame on us for the clubs financial woes is pretty ordinary if you ask me. And buying into the old Balmain v Wests argument is childish at best.

Its an accumulation of things in my opinion.

The prices are a touch steep to go to the footy these days.

Our dispersed fan base makes it hard for families to travel to all games

Many Diehard Magpie fans have given the Wests Tigers the flick, whilst the Balmain faction refuse to travel south on the M5

The Panthers are one of the least inspiring teams to watch atm.

but the biggest factor IMO is the way Wests Tigers played against Newcastle. It had wooden spoon written all over it.

Has anyone ever been asked their postcode when they enter a ground. It happens at various retail outlets so I'm sure it had some merit for those organisations. If we did would it, would it not give us an indication of where are fanbase is from. The club obviously has this info at their disposal about the members but have they had a look at the numbers? If they have does this mean we have a large supporter base in the eastern suburbs?
I dont think the assumption that most fans are either from campbelltown or the Balmain area is correct.

I don't usually agree with you Galahs, but I believe this is probably the best summation. A combination of factors, not simply just Macarthur fans shunning the game. Humphreys certainly didn't think his words through on this occasion.

Same thing happened last year at LO…we play crap....you get crap crowds no matter where it is regardless if we are still alive for a semis spot and its Ellis' final home game.

Humphries seems to forget this

Hypocrite

So what?

He is our clubs CEO.

Why didn't he express despair at wests tigers fans in general instead pointed out that wt fans from the area who didn't turn up. The implication is that balmain in fans fill leichardt and wests fans are responsible to fill campbelltown.

Sydneys MMMs take on the small crowd at Cambo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJQQncO4rqE&feature=youtube

Absolute joke in that reasoning, we are nothing like Illawarra in the St. George merger, which has never been a true 50/50 split and is definitely more like the Northern Eagles (except still going).

I was a Magpies supporter (I still love the Magpies, no matter what level they play in), granted not for as long as some of the older supporters (only the 90's but that is only because I was 5 when I started to follow them in 1990), but for the majority of my life at the time of the merger. Further to this my mother is an old Balmain supporter from her childhood (so we will say for 40 odd years until the merger) and never does she go on about them having to sacrifice the name in the merger or any other complaint in regards to the merger, she is a Wests Tigers supporter now and will be for the rest of her life. The merger actually united my family under one team. But with all of this and for the last few years I have become so sick of the whole "oh the Magpies are being shafted in favour of Balmain" argument or vice versa (but for the following I will be talking from my perspective as an old Magpies supporter).

Answer the following questions (I'll give my answers as well);

Is the team called the Balmain Tigers? No
Is the club the **WESTS** Tigers? Yes
Does the magpie still exist on the sleeve? Yes
Was there ever a guideline on the size of the magpie on the sleeves, or was it just that it had to be on the sleeves? Just had to be on the sleeve
Is there an old Balmain Tigers logo, or part thereof, on the jersey, or shorts, or socks? No, granted the logo is a tiger, but the design has no links to any old Tigers logo design.
Does the club recognise the magpies at least once per year in jerseys and celebrations, and still play games in the Magpies heartland? Yes.

The main question that people have to think about is; do the supporters want the club to have sponsors who will keep the club financially secure, even if it may be at the cost of a massive magpie on the sleeve?

For this club to move on, the old groups (not just the old magpie supporters, but the Balmain ones as well) need to get over it and move on (yes it is hard, but that is life). Either support the team that still does recognise the history that formed it (both sides) or walk away and leave the club to those who truly support it no matter what, through good and bad. Maybe instead of saying "well Balmain is broke, bring back the Magpies" why don’t we support that part of the merger and get it back up and running so that everyone benefits.

And remember if either team had merged with the other clubs touted at the time, neither a Magpie or Tiger would be in either the NRL or NSW cup, or if they were, it would just be a shell like the current North Sydney or Newtown teams. Be thankful for what you have and that you still have it, 'cause it could easily have been so very different.

Until this "us vs them" mentality is gone this club will NEVER get to the top of the potential that it has. All of this has NOTHING to do with "we have too many grounds" or "there isn't enough x colour in our jerseys" or any other silly argument either, it is simply the old school running with the whole "Magpies/Balmain being shafted in the merger" issue that is causing this, get rid of that and everything else will start to work more harmoniously.

End rant.

tbf to humpries last year there was a big push for Campbelltown to get Sunday arvo games etc and that led to the club electing to play the sole Sunday game at Campbelltown the crowd must have been a kick in the teeth. ..
ill advised comments none the less

Its really nit picking if thats all it comes down to.

ive lived ctown for 30yrs but always a tigers fan . Over time there has been so much migration to macarthur that there is so many other team supporters there not just Magpies fans . If the dragons or bulldogs had a home game there they would prob get more to ctown stadium . Wests tigers have lost that local vibe all this SFS games and the occasional drop in to ctown to smile and wave and take juniors then train at concord has taken this away. Leichardt cannot be beaten will always be special but times have changed and demographic have changed plus even i am bored of league i just watch the tigers game and thats it . I cannot relate to players anymore they are celebrities that play football on the weekend . Now the nrl says NO SHOULDER CHARGE and complicate all the rules well c u later im losing interest.

I thought of mentioning the fact that the Macarthur would be chock full of Doggies supporters but stopped short. Good post.

How does Humpty know there would be a full house if the Penrith game was played at LO?
With the abysmal showing of panthers fans on Sunday at CO, that would mean that there would magically be 19000 WT fans there.
If so, why didn't they turn up to westyville?

Maybe it is the ease of parking & lack of traffic jam after the game or the station across the road. Maybe the pleasant drive on freeways to C'town.
Sorry, just stirring the pot
