Is Alan Jones Right?

In his sports bit just a couple of minutes ago, Alan claimed that it is against the rules to throw the ball out of the field-of-play, that is the area bounded by the goal-lines and the side-lines. It is NOT against the laws to throw the ball out from the in-goal areas.
Darius Boyd threw the ball out over the dead-ball line FROM WITHIN THE FIELD-OF-PLAY. Therefore it should have been a penalty to the Tigers from where he threw the ball.
Is this right?

True. Game is done and dusted and nothing is going to change anything.
Look towards next year, and the big gaping hole in our weekends over summer that our beloved tigers fill every time through our winter.

Sounds like he's talking about Rugby Union….

Why would he be giving a shit anyway?

Why would he be giving a s*** anyway?

He was the Balmain coach from 1991-93 so it is a subject he would be still passionate about, didn't always know the rules of RL but would give some Churchillian speeches against the refs when he felt we were dudded.

I know he was coach, a poor one….hes never commented on us before....I think he''s talking about RU anyway

My default position is that Alan Jones is wrong about everything

I dont think it would have mattered if Boyd produced a chainsaw and removed one of our players legs, the refs were never going to give a penalty in the last 5 minutes let alone the last play of the game. We have copped some very rough calls in the finals series not much you can do about it now though.

My first thoughts as well. As usual I think Jones has it arse-up… Sounds like one of the 30,000 union rules. I have NEVER seen anyone penalised for doing this in an NRL game.

One thing it is is time off. It was in 2005 when Prince tried it and it should have been on Saturday as well. But thats life

There is a difference, Prince was doing it to waste time.

It's time off if the ball is dead (i.e. a drop out has been awarded and you throw away the ball). If you make the ball dead by throwing it over the dead ball line I don't believe it is time off.

I have never seen a penalty in Rugby League for that. It shouldn't be a penalty unless one team knock-on or something and that same team throws the ball away to waste time.

He is WRONG as usual - it is a Union rule!!!

Alan Jones has no care for the club that he effectively ruined - no clue about rugby league - and nothing else to say worth listening to!

Alan Jones is correct. He is not wrong at all. I have the rule book here right in front of me and it states throwing the ball out from within the confines of the field of play deliberately is a penalty to the other side.

**But**, the NRL will argue that throwing the ball backwards is permissible (its not).

And throwing the ball out forwards is a penalty, which it definately is anyway.

That is what Robert Finch will say, I bet you $100000000000000.

The rule book I have is a referee's examination book for 2009 which I got for my coaches ticket.

The NRL interpretations are the rules nowadays - not the rule book!

Look at the separation "rule" - it is not in the book!!

As such - Jones is wrong!!!

How can he be wrong if it is the rule book. Lay off the Kool-aid, your prejudice is showing.

Does it cite what the relevant rule number is BB? I had a look earlier and couldn't find anything.
