Is it the Coach the Halves or Both?

The following table may be a guide and help us to answer the question.

Cowboys end of season ladder positions for the past 5 seasons.
.....................Halfback....5/8.........Coach
2017 - 8th.....MM/JT......TMM............PG
2018 - 13th...MM/JT.......MM/TMM...PG
2019 - 14th....MM...........TMM............PG
2020- 14th.....MM.........SD/JC......PG/JH
2021- 15th.....MM.........SD.........T.Payten

As can be seen a rapid decline since 2017 with mostly the same coach and halves (JT was mostly injured)
...........................2022................................
....New H/back.....New5/8....New Coach
...
C.Townsend.....T.Deardon......T..Payten

The Cowboys have had a brilliant start to the season winning 2/3, they were dominant in winning their last 2 games and only lost by 2 points in their first game.

It appears that with the arrival of a new Coach (TP) plus their new halves the Cowboys have shown instant success and are destined for a top 8 spot since 2017.

So what do you think folks, is it the Coach, the halves or both.

The problem is a lot of people want simplistic answers. No offense to @hobbo1.

We need a better squad, we need better halves, we need better outside backs and we need better forwards. We may also need a new coach. There is a lot wrong at this point.

We are basically a rabble right now. Let's see how the year plays out though. It's only week 3.

Its both, but it can be fixed.
Our halves need to learn how to manage and close out a game. Our coach needs to learn how to manage the bench.

Madge is staying put
Squad, can only field what we've got. Frustrating !
Get the leadership group by the short and curlies
5 blokes and still can't bounce back
They were chosen for a reason
No free rides !
No communication or affirmation on the field
Disgrace..

Need a classy board like the Roosters mobsters.

Ours are amateur hour.

I agree.... they should all be shown the door with a commemorative wooden spoon after we inevitably win it this year.

Great backrowers

No leadership on the park to ice a game or execute a game plan.
They are clueless, I don't like blaming a player but Brooks has no idea... I seriously think Madden should take the reigns and let him make the mistakes by trying... Brooks doesn't even want to give his best anymore and that's my observation... he tackles and sometimes does try but I don't know what's going on with him and Simpkin is so slow with his delivery... sigh sigh sigh 😢

Mate i don't know who you're refering to, but M Morgan won a GF in 2015 playing as a 5/8,

and then was voted,
the Dally M halfback of the year in 2017.

Then it was all downhill for the Cowboys until this season?
I think the Cowboys form this year is largely due to Nanai and Luki and the other young forwards.

Next year we get Papali’i and hopefully Nikora and maybe we start to compete physically.

No surprise we were good when we had Gareth Ellis.

It’s also only round 3. I can’t see the Cowboys keeping this form for the whole year. I still have them missing the 8.
