Is it the Coach the Halves or Both?

I think the Cowboys form this year is largely due to Nanai and Luki and the other young forwards.

Next year we get Papali’i and hopefully Nikora and maybe we start to compete physically.

No surprise we were good when we had Gareth Ellis.

Agree, that's my feeling too for next season, we will be a lot more competitive than now,
together with our rising juniors it also seems that we should be able to get at least another 3 more quality signings.

If the club does do the Brooks/Thompson swap we might actually have a forward pack that wouldn’t always get bashed. The Hastings/ Douehi halves combo would then need to click to get us out of the doldrums

To say it's either the Coach or the halfback is way, way too simplistic. Sure they both may play a part but the problem is much more than that.
It's too late at night to detail all the issues we have as a team and a club, but just to mention a few of the contributing factors to our poor showings:

We have zero elite level NRL players or "match winner" types in our top 30
We have a weak pack of forwards that are mostly dominated every game.
We have a very poor spine - especially at DH and fullback.
Our centres and wingers are poor defenders
We show no aggression or line speed in D and apply no pressure on their kickers
We have no momentum or cohesion - no runners and little movement off the ball in A
Our playing squad has too many basic errors in them to maintain any pressure.

Oh yeah - we don't even have a decent goalkicker either.

You might argue that a lot of the above problems fall back to the Coaching or the halves - but honestly each and every one of the 17 is to blame for what they dish up week after week. In saying all of this, we would do a lot better if we just stuck to the basics of:

STOP the mistakes, Tackle harder, Run harder, move up faster together in D and chase our god damn kicks!!!!

Put the pressure on him.
Needs to be held accountable as the fans are happy to accept such ineptitude.

Thanks Cronk.

Finally they make the end of year review public

Yep, that pretty much details our problems.
Not able to be fixed without swapping out players.

Very well said TigerSJ.

Agree. Forwards dictate and dominate the tone of a game. Our powder puffs are a joke.

Q - If Madge was at another club would he be successful -
A - Likely

Q2 - If most other coaches were at this club, would they be successful???

problem is Balmain put everything they had with an idiot and lost the lot
Magpies are just ingrained with failure
Put them both together and we have a board and team like this
Get people on the board who know what they are doing

Care to complete the above with the addition of the backrowers?
Not really because I don’t think your sample size of three games proves much. I do believe Cowboys suffered from grand final hangover, Thurston’s injuries and a few senior guys getting old at the same time.

I would much rather us bring in some real firepower/leadership in the forwards if we could make two significant changes at this club.

They don’t even have to be leaders in an age sense. Most clubs don’t do well without strike backrowers. If we keep Kelma and Lucy on the park all year it will go a long way to deciding our fortunes. Defence is key though and was the tail of our 2021 campaign. We have already started off much better this year in that regard.
For context.
Now I can’t compare Newcastle to the Roosters last year in 2021, however they were on a high and have shown in this past round with 12 men for 55 mins of a match that they can attack. Our side last year with that many errors vs a side would of conceded far more than 4 tries.
Defensively given the weight of possession in that game. I feel that is a much better result for an earlier round game compared to last year.

We do seem to have improved our edge defense. Time will tell if that holds up. Luciano in particular has been much better than last year.
