It was only round 1!

While the Tigers were sloppy last night, there is no need to panic. The side struggled for possession and came up with some classic round 1 errors such as sloppy penalties, fatigue induced errors and a kick off out on the full. If this continues all season we won't win a game, but you have to expect that these areas will improve, or at least are improvable. I liked our shape in attack, our forwards made solid metres (particularly Galloway late in the sets) and we looked good in the first 20 minutes.

I am particularly surprised at the level of anger surrounding the performance of Moltzen, Lawrence and Anasta. Anasta looked to be a capable defender with a good ability to slow the play the ball down, and he runs intelligent lines which will cause problems. Moltzen has improved his support play and looked solid at the back. While Lawrence just simply didn't have a chance in attack and played alright in defense. In a side which had very little possession there was very little opportunity for any player to perform well. Why target these players?

The key issues the tigers need to address is their ability to slow the play the ball. This has always been the achilles heel of the tigers squad. I don't think that necessitates a total squad revamp, but their defensive structure needs work. Again, if you go back and watch the tackles Anasta made, very few of his tackles allowed quick play the balls. Murdoch-Masilla and Bell on the other hand struggled a bit in slowing the attacking momentum down.

The other concern is last tackle kicks. Marshall's kicking game was poor, but hopefully he is just rusty. Plus, Miller is a new halfback and it is always difficult incorporating a new half into a side.

Anyway, I just think that the forum has a tendency to call for everyone's head and write off the season a little too quickly and, in reality, the game was simply a classic example of bad luck, sloppy penalties and tired errors compounding to create a lopsided scoreline. Games like this happen and I'm waiting until round five before I start thinking about making changes. Changing a side based on one rusty performance only creates greater uncertainties. Be more patient and let the side that trained together all off-season develop in the regular season.

If nobody panicked yours would be the only post on here.
To a certain degree I agree - but there were still some real problems out there.

I agree with a lot of the OP too…..but gees I think youre very very generous towards Moltz BA and Rowdy
Theyre all senior players now and shouldnt be as poor as they all were round 1....some of the defense of all three was embarrasing
They werent alone tho

A coach is there to find solutions to problems. If the coach doesn't fix these problems they won't go away. By Round 6 the problems will be well and truly ingrained and it is then too late to make a run for anything except the wooden spoon. Come on Mick wake them up.

can someone tell me what Moltzen did wrong

luckily enough I drank a little too much and don't remember.

Unfortunately ,drinking a little much didn't work ,just had a hangover and bad memories

Moltzen did nothing wrong ,it was Potters fault , he should of picked Tedesco  .

Moltzen was Moltzen didn't get involved enough , didn't hit the ball back with any venom ,whinged and sooked all night Just pick one of about 20 performances from 2012 and use that as a reference ,should help

yeah I suspected as much, didn't remember any howlers from him but also don't remember him getting involved much at all

Its still only round 1.
But we all know Moltzen will never change.
He will become a footy card with warn out edges in a game of flicks & we will remember Moltzen just as much as we remember Brian Cook.
But back on topic - its only round 1\. A 'glorified' trial match.
Plenty of time. Half the comp can make the 8.

Good OP. Definitely not the time panic. It was a bad night, exasperated by the knights monopoly on possession but i'd be fairly certain that's as bad as it gets this season. I can't believe we got owned the way we did. My only real concerns out of the game were:

a) Some of Moltzen's defensive work. And,

b) The defensive errors we made as a unit. Some players were sliding whilst the next man was rushing out. We looked confused at times.

As you said AmericanHX, it really was just another glorified trial match but one that had we played well we certainly could've won.

i love these peolpe who come out and say : ITS ONLY ROUND ONE: how quickly it becomes round 10 and the season is gone. I thought Potter would bring change and new ideas to a stale side , but it appears nothing has changed.

BP, to be fair it takes time and match situations to refine these new ideas and get rid of old habits. Learning from mistakes is part of that process. I wouldn't give them 10 weeks but as always, I'll give them 6 weeks before I form my opinion of where we are. Monday night we looked like the 2012 version which is not good. Potter though will twist things around these next few weeks and I'm confident we'll show something better.

everyone wanted Miller at 7.. Now everyone is saying we dont and he isnt a 1st grader
everyone wanted marshall back at 6 .. he is and people still are not happy

everyone wants things to CLICK instanly!!!!!..

its not going to happen..

New Coach and a totally new playing style .. dont get me wrong, we played poorly, but if you expected more your kidding ur self
