Ivan Cleary Axed

If the board would terminate Taylor and pay him out and appoint Cleary, I couldn't think of anything better! They could say that they feel a new start is needed after everything that's happened. How much could Taylor be earning per year? According to Pascoe last week on radio we are in a great financial position, amongst the top 6 or 7 clubs in the NRL.

The Warriors are on the verge of something special, the last piece of the puzzle is the right coach. Cleary knows the club and to date, is the only coach whose ever had any success with them, one of 2 if you want to include Daniel Anderson 13 yrs ago. Do you really think he's going to pass this opportunity up if it was presented to him because his kids are at school? Not likely.

How do we know Warriors even want him? Mcfadden built the club and made it what it is today, some astute buys, the players love him and pushed for him to become coach. Would be unfair to sack him before RTS and Luke arrive.

Well, You have us as the front runners for him. how do you know we even want him?

“If you are calling re Ivan as you know we already have our coaching staff for next year so Ivan is not heading back to Mt Smart, cheers,” Warriors chief executive Jim Doyle said.

PHIL Gould says he was concerned about the welfare of his Dally M coach-of-the-year coach Ivan Cleary midway through the season.

He thought he was struggling under the stress of a massive injury toll, losing games and the drawn out negotiations of his assistant coach Trent Barrett to join Manly.

“In the middle of the season I was a bit worried about him,” Gould told The Daily Telegraph on Monday night, “We spoke and I thought he needed a break.

“But Ivan said he was motivated to keep going. He wanted to keep going but we knew things had to improve. We’ve been talking about it for a few months. I just got a gut feel it was the right time.”

The Panthers general manager revealed he conducted his own end-of-season review before coming to the conclusion Cleary had to go.

The Panthers are expected to name former Broncos coach Anthony Griffin as Cleary’s replacement in the next 48 hours once they have reached an agreement on a salary.

“I’ve just finished a review and felt we need to make a change,” Gould said, “There’s no hiding from the fact that he was terminated.

“His contract was up next year anyway and I didn’t want to go through all the business next year of will he or won’t he stay. “It was in our best interests to do it now.

“Ivan was obviously very disappointed but he said he had a feeling this was going to happen.”

Rumours also emerged on Monday night that Cleary had lost the support of a number of key players.

The Panthers have a number of their most outstanding prospects coming off contract next year and the club was anxious to make the coaching move before entering negotiations with the players.

The fact he didn’t act on a number of cases of player ill-discipline was also a reason why Gould acted.

After a highly successful 2014, the Panthers crashed out of contention this year and narrowly avoided finishing with the wooden spoon.

Cleary’s former club, the New Zealand Warriors, on Monday night distanced themselves from re-signing the coach.

Andrew McFadden is under pressure to make an impact with the Warriors, who failed to make the finals this season. The club has gone on a big signing spree for 2016, snapping up Sydney Roosters fullback Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and South Sydney hooker Issac Luke to form an all-Kiwi spine to complement halfback Shaun Johnson.

“If you are calling re Ivan as you know we already have our coaching staff for next year so Ivan is not heading back to Mt Smart, cheers,” Warriors chief executive Jim Doyle said.

Based on the fact that we need him!

We do?

I think so. I think under Jason Taylor we are going to have another terrible year and will start to lose our best players if things don't improve. I don't think we will be attracting any quality players either.

I think Penrith have gone backwards with this decision. Huge opportunity for us to be the dominant western Sydney team if we can get our act together!

Yep sounds like just want we need…I wonder if Merrin has a get out clause if Ivan isn't Coach...

Rumours only - but it does suggest that securing their key players far more important to Gould than allowing the coach to see out his contract, at the risk of perhaps losing them. Tough business being a coach - one game of the GF last year sacked the next.

Segeyaro
Mansour
DWZ

Even if that were 100% fact, I still believe he would be a much better option. I wonder how much support JT has from our players

Sign Cleary and tell Taylor he is free to negotiate with other clubs. If that fails he can coach NSW Cup for Wests Tigers.

Who'd be an NRL coach! Thought Cleary was doing a good job allowing for the Pennies horrendous injury toll this year. Must be hard though with Gould looking over your shoulder all the time

I think you have misunderstood what cultured bogan has said. He's actually giving a reason as to why cleary would move to nz not suggesting he wouldn't.

Nope, i agree with him and was adding on to what he was saying. I deleted the previous comments in his quote which is probably what caused the confusion.

Gus might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I think he's got all bases covered when it comes to footy and administrative smarts. He's up there with the best. Always has been.

If he thinks Cleary has done his dash at Penrith and doesn't have what it takes to keep the club moving fwd, then I don't doubt it's the correct decision.

Ivan will pick up another gig in no time.

He couldn't be on big money .
If he is , then the board should be sacked
