DESPITE being under contract for 2019, Wayne Bennett has been floated as the man set to take control of the Panthers next season.

When discussing just who could replace Griffin as the next coach, Paul Kent on NRL 360 pointed to an intriguing storyline between Bennett and Phil Gould.

“Have you noticed this year that Phil Gould has been suggesting that Wayne Bennett will not be coaching the Brisbane Broncos in 2019,” Kent said.

“That’s his belief, is that a coincidence?”

“The craziness of Penrith is equally matched by the craziness that’s going on in Brisbane.

“Wayne’s contract dilemmas being played out in the public domain, well this caught us all by surprise so I started to think on this and wondered why Phil Gould was so adamant that he wouldn’t be at the Broncos.

“I just thought in the back of my mind that I wonder if these two have been having a conversation and when you start to think about it or suggest it to people the first thing they say to you is ‘these two couldn’t last’.

“If Wayne Bennett decides to leave Brisbane and Phil Gould welcomes him with open arms, what would they have? A 2-3 year window where they’d have to work together with one goal and both are very capable of achieving it with the roster they have out there.”

Kent’s thoughts on the coaching replacement was backed up by Michael Ennis who also tipped Bennett as the next man up.

“It has been rumoured that Trent Barrett and John Cartwright was going to head back West, but Phil Gould was adamant last that wasn’t going to be the case,” Ennis said on Fox Sports News.

“I think Wayne Bennett might be the one, I get the feeling that Bennett possibly won’t be happy to sit on his hands. Now I could be wrong.

“He’s spoken about his desire and his want to continue coaching. Now if he gets wind at the back end of this season that the Broncos won’t extend his deal and won’t allow him to continue coaching beyond 2019 then that leaves the window open for Wayne to call his own shots.

“Wayne’s been in this game a long time, we’ve seen him make those big calls he’s not afraid to do that. Could you imagine him striking a combination there with Phil Gould.

“They’ve got a window at the moment with talent to win a premiership so Wayne Bennett isn’t going there with a five-year plan. He’s going there to win a premiership and we saw him do it at St George when they had that window.

“It’s not as silly as it seems.”

Has to be Bennett, Cleary or Barrett (marginal).

I would back Bennett strongly after what he said. but wouldn't shock me if it was Cleary.

Tigers would have to release him from his contract.

Sure there's precedent with players, but the head coach is a single unit - you need a viable alternative to make that kind of decision, e.g. Tigers lining up Wayne Bennett or something.

Ivan can't just walk out, he'd be in breach of contract and we could sue him, prevent him coaching elsewhere, cease paying him, ask the NRL for a coaching cap allowance and get another coach in.

Why cant he quit? Gives notice now, I dont see what breach that incurs. Ricky Stuart did as much at Parra and went to the Raiders.

Stuart had a clause stating he could leave at anytime for any reason. You gotta love parra.
