Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe responded by denying Cleary was seeking a release to move back to Penrith.
“Our position is very clear that Ivan Cleary is contracted with us for another two years and we expect him to be with us,” Pascoe told NRL 360.
“Ivan Cleary or his management have not asked for a release and if they do we will not be granting a release.”

Proper clubs when asked to release people important to their success say no and expect the people to act professionally and get on with the job they were hired to do. Our reaction to things like the Kahu and Taupau situations are why someone like Gus thinks we're here for his shopping needs.
So we save face externally, but are stuck with a coach whos heart isnt in it.
Then what?
You expect him to get over it and do his job. Players get turned down for releases regularly and only your Mitchell Moses types don't react professionally. I just think if we roll here we just forget about keeping anyone half decent. First sign of pressure from a big club we will release them. It's about the image we project. I doubt other clubs bother to ask Melbourne or Brisbane to release first graders.
What are you hearing fellow coastie, have you heard a release has been requested ?

I don’t think I am alone in thinking if he has a contract with us and we are adamant he sees it out, that we expect stronger language than that. He’s pussy footing around, sounding like a politician. Big fan of Justin, but he dropped the ball here.

We won't be letting him go," Pascoe told Fairfax Media.
"I've spoken with Ivan a couple of times today and the bizarre thing is there are all these whispers about big offers and long-term deals, but he's told me nothing has taken place other than the fact the Penrith chairman has reached out to him.
"The people out at Penrith or anywhere else can say what they want about having a good relationship with him and they're keen to get him to coach, but they're forgetting one key thing - he is contracted to the Wests Tigers, a club that is very proud and strong and who won't let Ivan go to a rival club.
"We will fight tooth and nail to make sure that doesn't happen. Clubs think we're a pushover and it's not the case. If rivals think they can try and come in and upset what we're trying to do here, they'll have a fight on their hands.
"It upsets me. The Ivan I know and the character he demonstrates daily and what he has done to assist us in rebuilding this club, it gives me the confidence he will only carry on with that professional manner [and not leave]."

I don't think he is pussy footing around - he has stated the facts - he can't stop Cleary from breaching the contract. I would have liked him to address that Wt would take legal action should Cleary do that. I would expect that he has already told Cleary that in private - so much for their close relationship.

I saw Pascoe, whom I rate personally as one of the best CEOs in Australian sport, stand firm and make as clear a response as possible. He could not have been firmer.
And he gave Gould a bit of a backhander on the way through. Perfect.
