Ivan Cleary - THREAD..

Reading between the lines on Pascoe's comments Ivan asked for a release yesterday. Great that we are saying No, but how are players going to show commitment to a coach that wanted to walk out on them.

After reading Pascoes comments and how much emphasis he put on fighting and retaining Ivan, I'm thinking that this thing maybe more than just headlines. I'm starting to think that it could get ugly and potentially some precedence set in respect to approaching coaches.

Or maybe Greenberg and the NRL will just continue to ignore the actions of some of the bigger clubs.

Dont expect the NRL to change anything unless it suits their agenda.

It's unfortunate that Greenberg believe that the media and intrigue is good for the game as it keeps the league in the news

TIGERS READY FOR COURTROOM BRAWL OVER CLEARY

Basically saying penrith are in trouble for promoting a breach of contract and the tigers have a solid case to go after them in court.

Strong words need to be supported by strong actions. He needs to be smart and realise if he stands his ground, the reward will be to make a big play for Nathan. If Ivan and Nathan have it set in stone they are playing together, we can make it happen a year earlier than Penrith can. Giving up Ivan also means giving up the chance to lure Nathan. I would hope Pascoe realises that.

It grieves me to say this, but I'm inclined to play the compensation card.

Harawira-naera and Hetherington will do me throw in Adam O'Brien from the Storm as coach (wishful thinking I know) and I'm more than happy with the outcome.

Wow…..we are buggered.

First of all, well done Justin Pascoe, stick to your guns.

Ivan is gone.

Im sure Pascoe is telling the truth saying that Ivan has not asked (formally) for a release but the mere fact that he said that the two of the had an "open and frank" conversation and that Pascoe on behalf of the board had to come back the next day to tell him he would not be granted a release, and that we will "fight tooth and nail all the way" clearly means Cleary told him he wants to go.

How the hell can Cleary front Matulino, Mbye, Thompson, Kev (told to leave), Packer, Reynolds in the face at training?

Tough times ahead.

Summed up very accurately in my view…if Ivan wanted to stay he would’ve come out on the front foot and said so...instead he has remained silent only feeding the speculation he wants out....

Pascoe knows in his heart there is no point keeping Cleary to his contract if his heart is not with the WT..so what is happening now with these public statements is jockeying for a legal position....WT will get all the coin they can out of this...

If this plays out as it seems to be, i’m done....my 8th year as a WT member will be my last...also, the NRL can go get ******....I’ll follow another sport....i’m over the way the game is run....it’s worse than a business...people like Gould, Bellamy and Bennett who are revered by the NRL have totally stuffed this game up the last 10 years....

I’m lost for words. So disappointed that he even has flirted with the idea.

It’s just dispicable.

Let him go and we’ll find a new coach.

I never had a reason to hate the Panthers but I do now

Ivan strikes me as an old school type of bloke.

Why would he go back to Penrith knowing their motivation for wanting him is simply to re-sign his son? Sounds like a pretty akward home-coming party.

Once they lock Nathan into a 5 year deal, Ivan will probably be given the sack again like Griffin, himself, Elliot, Lang and Simmons before him. If my memory is correct, Gould himself was probably the last Penrith Coach to not be sacked mid-contact.

Yep no coach is safe at Penrith even when the team is doing well! Has there ever been a coach of a top 4 team sacked four weeks out from the finals? Surely not? Way to stuff your finals campaign! Good work Gus

Ivan would be mad to go back there! What he should do is show Gould that he's really interested in signing, string them along for a week or so, then do a complete turnaround and throw the money in Gould's fat face, stay with The Tigers and bring his son over just to rub salt into Gus' wounds. A big 'sting operation' needs to be pulled on the sneaky, conniving 'know it all' bee sting head :smiling_imp:

NBA is going alright atm. Lakers signed Lebron, Raptors signed Kawhi, Clippers signed no one, Celtics have Hayward and Irving back. Should be a great season.

Cut out the swearing and abusive language people. I have banned 3 members today and won't hesitate to ban more if people don't want to abide by the rules.

At the end of the day, would he be that big of a loss? I stand by the fact we have not improved this year, we’ve gone sideways. Him leaving and us signing Maguire could be the ultimate blessing in disguise.

I think less of him already.

However I'm sick of people like Moses kicking up a stink and simply worming their way out of the joint.

Ivan has talked all this rubbish about the Bus and bought in a heap of players. Some genuine plodders too.

He probably knows deep down were in for a long 2019 and 2020 with this roster.

Pascoe should turn the heat back on Penrith and Cleary whatever happens. Like he said fight tooth and nail.

WESTS Tigers are readying for a courtroom brawl with Penrith as the fallout of the Panthers’ secret raid of coach Ivan Cleary turns nasty.

The Daily Telegraph has learnt the Tigers are exploring their legal options if Penrith are found to have induced Cleary to break his contract at his current club.

FAMOUS FIVE: Who will coach Penrith?

COST: Griffin sacking could cost Panthers up to $3 million

Tigers chair Marina Go has openly said the club had no intentions of releasing Cleary from the remaining two years of his contract and that Cleary was yet to seek a release.

Leading sports lawyer Tim Fuller, who has more than a decade of legal experience and played first grade for South Sydney and the Gold Coast in the 1990s, said the Tigers “have a strong case”.

LISTEN! Buzz Rothfield grills Phil Gould on the reasons behind the sacking of Penrith coach Anthony Griffin.

You can download the League Central podcast on iTunes.

“It falls into an area of tort — the tort of inducing breach of contract,” Fuller said. “An important element is intent. If it went to court, the court would look at whether Penrith intended for Ivan to breach his contract.

“Now from what we are hearing that Panthers and Ivan have been in secret talks for weeks and then Anthony Griffin is sacked.

“Clearly, there has been an intention from Penrith to induce the breach of contract if Ivan leaves the Tigers.

“I think Penrith have miscalculated on this one and not considered the legal ramifications.”

The Tigers were left in the dark about the Panthers’ inquiries regarding their head coach, which are alleged to have happened about two weeks ago with a senior Penrith official.

The Tigers only learnt of the move following Griffin’s shock sacking on Monday afternoon which then heavily linked Cleary to a return to the club which axed him at the end of 2015.

It was then chief executive Justin Pascoe was informed of Penrith’s advances, before Pascoe told the Tigers board. It is understood Go spoke with Cleary on Monday night where he did not give an indication that he wanted out of the club he has been entrusted to rebuild.

Unlike players, the NRL does not have any rules in place to halt teams from approaching contracted coaches. If Cleary seeks a release, he will likely do so on compassionate grounds in a bid to link up with son Nathan.

This has left Tigers officials bemused with Cleary given full control of the club’s playing list. Discussions between Tigers management and Cleary surrounding his son have been simple; they have told him if he feels like Nathan is the best option for the club then he can do whatever he thinks it would take to bring him to the club once his contract expires at Penrith at the end of next year.

What will Cleary do? AAP Image/Mick Tsikas.

Cleary’s appointment at the Tigers midway through last year has given the club the stability it has craved since Tim Sheens’ departure at the end of 2012.

Since then, the Tigers have had four coaches in just six years, and are reluctant to be on the lookout for another.

Cleary was entrusted with reshaping the club’s roster after Jason Taylor was axed. He has had moderate success this year with the Tigers still a slim chance of finishing inside the top eight.

Meanwhile, the Panthers got on with life post-Griffin yesterday, attending a screening of retired Kangaroos prop Jason Stevens’ new movie Chasing Comets at Hoyts Penrith.

Is Jason Stevens starring or directing the movie?

Also i feel everybody is turning their back on the club when they needed it most. They are doing all the right stuff. Making a stand and doing there best. Its not the clubs fault its Ivans which pains me to say as i was a believer

Today is atypical ….

I fully believe Ivan has asked for a release but I’m holding back in case I have to eat my words.

But if he has, you can see already on this forum, there will be widespread hatred of him. He simply cannot fix this and move on.

As Patriot said: how can he look players in the face. My God - Matulino moved his family from NZ to be part of the Ivan Vision

Irrespective of what Pascoe says, the wick has been lit.

There is no way I can see IC remaining here until the end of his contract.

He is a fraud and unbelievably selfish. His top priority is not the club he is coaching at or the players busting their arse for him. His number one priority is his son. So much so that he is willing to rubbish his reputation, break a contact, return to an organisation that sacked him and be micro managed by sociopath just to coach his precious son….

The tone of pascoe is setting up for massive compensation. He knows Ivan is gone. Well that's my take. I'm usually wrong with these things like most other things..

My first thoughts have been similar to you. For a while I have been disillusioned with the NRL but love my Tigers. In particular I loved the redemption story starting to unfold under Ivan. My first thoughts were that Im done, zero interest in the Tigers or RL after this.

I have been somewhat bolstered by the way Pascoe has handled things so far. I am under no illusions, I cant see a way that Ivan stays but Im hopeful that Pascoe can salvage the best possible outcome out of this fiasco. if the club appoint a good replacement and continue a positive direction, i'm sure Ill get back aboard but its hard right now.

One thing is for sure. I am a member and I will not attend one more game whilst Ivan is coach. I couldnt bear to hear his name read out as coach.

Might as well kiss our finals chances goodbye now
This is just another thing to derail our season just like every other season before it
As sad as it makes me to make this statement as I don’t usually write us off until we literally have no chance of making finals
I guess raiders will pump us once again after all the media around Cleary to Penrith rumors

I just watched Pascoe’s CEO update and by the way he is talking in the video it dosent sound like it was a good meeting with IC
