Agree. He’s a great broken field runner but Daine also looked out of sorts and got picked off with ease when chiming in on set backline plays. Gus reckons he’s a 6. Say what you like about Gus, but I reckon he might be right on this one.

Thing is though, if Daine was getting muddled up and picked off chiming into the backline as fullback, I'm not sure why that's an argument to promote him up the chain to #6?

The five-eigth's key attribute is supposed to be knowing when to kick, pass or run - being decisive, because they are the last half to touch the football in attack. And the run is supposed to be a real threat, not just a last resort.

Arguably a fullback has less thinking time again than 5/8, so you could potentially argue that moving Laurie to #6 gives him some more time. But equally, that indecisiveness could simply rear it's ugly head earlier in the backline. He's definitely not a tackle-busting runner, so you aren't going to see him run if there are no gaps.

One might also argue that the lack of established 5/8 in 2020 led to many of Daine's issues with not having a clear role to play in attack.

Fair point. I can't see him being moved from fullback next season anyway but with AD sidelined, it will be interesting to see who lines up at 6.

I got a feeling it will be hastings and peachy as bench utility...

I would not be surprised at all if Hastings goes to 7 and Brooks plays 6 at the start of the year, with Brooks having a stronger directive to run the footy, and Hastings doing more of the kicking. This leaves Brooks as the left-foot option for the alternate side of the field. It may have been different if Doueihi was fit.

Brooks will then touch the football noticeably less often than Hastings will.

Hopefully Hastings will know what to do with the ball .. that would be a positive!

That's supposed to be his deal, right? Hastings is not a passive footballer, he goes to the line, plays hard, competes hard. Very physical, lacks a bit of finesse. Almost an exact opposite of Brooks, who is technically very capable, stylish, but hesitant, reactive.

With Hastings I think your main challenge is if he regularly takes bad options, because watching him I get the impression he's always going to be pushing the play. Brooks on the other hand usually criticised for not taking any options at all.

Brooks is a terrible option decider. I can’t imagine Hastings being worse. What I am looking forward to is Hastings short kicking game. He seems to be very accurate on cross field kicks. Almost Luke Walsh good.

This is what I’m looking forward to… add to that the ingoal in the uk seems a metre wide at times, he is going to have mountains of space to aim for!

This post is in response to @JC99’s post in Brooks thread. Willow locked it while I was writing my response

As there is a perception that I am one of the members of his hate club, let me try and state my stance on him once and for all. To me his is an unknown. It annoys me when I hear calls that he should be made captain, because he hasn’t played NRL in 3-4 years, and even then he never cemented himself. I’ve never really commented on what he was like before he went to England. From all reports he seemed to have a chip on his shoulder, but now has turned the corner. Which if true, good for him. But I really have no interest in hearing about what a good guy he is. Being a good guy doesn’t win football games. If we’re languishing at the bottom of the ladder next year and his form has been underwhelming, no one will be sharing any of his heartfelt tweets. It’s shaping up to be a Hastings/Brooks combo anyway come round 1, so it’s not a case of worrying that he’s going to take Brooks place like you mentioned in an earlier post. The way it’s working out, and how skinny our centre’s are looking, that’s where AD might end up when he gets back, meaning we run the whole year with Hastings/Brooks, and the months of bickering over who is the better player is made completely pointless.

Thank God the Brooks thread closed. Unhealthy obsession held by some.

Laurie is the future 5/8 you heard it first here !

I think Laurie is a few years away from being considered for a move to 5/8. I also couldn’t see the transition being that smooth. Talented footballer but still learning the game

I have been a Tigers supporter since the ‘60’s, never been more excited about a recruit than Jackson Hastings, the major thing that is missing in the Tigers is voice, he has a big one and am looking forward to his input
