Jacob Liddle #198

I watched the game again and some observations

- raiders targeted Liddle in defence. He may be registered with 50 off tackles, 30 of which he made before halftime but he was apart of probably 100 tackles.

- the raiders slowed the ruck down despite our forwards making more contact meters during big parts of the game not allowing Liddle to use his strength and run from dummy half

- his options to pass to didn’t exists. Mbye and Brooks both camped on the left all game at least 10 times the ball moved and play broke down as no one knew what the play was

- his runners were flat at best limiting his options even more

- his left to right passing was wobbly, not much flat and infront.

- I couldn’t count how often he was missing at hooker during the game which is what you want and shows his fitness levels are solid.

It was an 80min defensive effort game from him. He will be better for it and we have no choice but to give him a few weeks. Worrying signs as I didn’t see any signs of wanting to control the play or urgency in speeding the ruck up.

His service from dummy half is shocking. Slow and puts our whole attack on the back foot.

Watching the game again and he wasn’t passing from the ground. It was get ball, pull up, step & pass.
The great hookers can do that but 90% of the time pass from the ground which gives the halves/backs an extra meter to work with. It’s all about giving time to the halves to size up and make decisions which he didn’t do. He also didn’t run which is his main strength.

This is correct somewhat.

But when the guy playing the ball to you has been dominated, is almost taking a step back from the marker as they play the ball, it forces you to be upright because you have no room, and then have to provide that slower service.

because our forwards didnt win the ruck, get up on the front front and lean forward into the marker to play the ball, it leaves the hooker with little room to get the right posture to pick up the ball and provide service in one motion.

I hated Farah at the end, but he was like this and its because his forwards were being dominated in the ruck. Have a look that the hookers that do provide good service and you will see Cameron Smith, Jake Friend, Damian Cook, etc. All with dominant forwards in that play the ball. Its not coincidence.

Hope Simpkin can fill the shoes and make it in the NRL...Jacob will have to become a very solid 80 min player to even be considered as an NRL week to week hooker/dh...

He's played nearly 50 NRL games. How long are we going to wait for him while we have Simpkin in reserves.

Dont know mate, but Hartigan and Madge have to weigh up the options...buy some one new or upgrade Simpkin...I dont know,Im not in the position to know whats needed....

We run with a Liddle and Simpkin combination this year until one stands out and can play the 80
Release one at the end of the year
Sign Smith at all costs and he goes straight to Hooker
I don't see liddle excelling
I think our best chance will be Simpkin
But he may not work out either

This game was a reality check for our guys
There is more work to be done

Agree use Liddle money to go towards signing B Smith

wow guys relax... he's had one bad game in how many?

He has always been at a very minimum serviceable whenever he's taken the field, plays one bad game with a new team around him against one of the best teams in the comp where his fellow team mates were just as bad and suddenly "he hasnt got it" "put Simpkin in "use his money for Brandon Smith" "put Mybe at hooker"

are we serious?

The team was VERY out of sync as a whole, we had 5 club debutants in key positions on a very wet day. It's round one... give the team some time to gel.

He is off contract we have Simpkin and B Smith is a hooker / lock. If it was the other way around and Simpkin contract up then sell him but it is not.
Simpkin will be starting hooker by mid year

B. Smith has stated multiple times he would only join a club as first choice hooker not a lock. Simpkin missed a year with Covid and is biding his time under Liddle now. Can't see him willing to stay after we purchase another starting hooker in front of him.

Are you saying/suggesting we have B Smith already?

I thought Liddell did OK (first game back), if he can continue improving and playing 80 mins, then he won’t be going anywhere?

Also, think it is too big an ask to play Simpkin there yet? He is still a kid.

Simpkin looks the goods Liddle has played 45 games in 5 years. For this year he is all we have as neither Simpkin or he can run 80 mins. No idea if we get B Smith or not based on our track record doubt it Think B Smith will end up at dogs or if dogs miss B Smith they will take Liddle

Simpkin would stay if he was understudy to B Smith the NZ hooker he can learn and come off bench and go well.
No way Simpkin would be happy sitting behind Liddle

You win most measured post of the thread!.

What id add to it is that Liddel is trying to develop an up tempo Robbie Faarah style game out of dummy half. Getting out and beating the marker and bringing the forwards on to the ball.

It will take time to perfect but he has all the attributes to pull it off and just needs time on the field. Not to mention his forwards doing a little better to dominate the ruck.

Any thought of dumping Liddle after that game is off the mark.

Its a good strategy especially if we are winning the PTB. We were not and were very slow.

If he mixes up both options he will be a much better player

And he can play both roles. Its the job of the coach now to fine tune his game and make a point of this t hrough video sessions etc.

congratulations jacob. You're a tough kid. Lots of respect for him coming back from all those horrific injuries. Watching his recovery process on youtube was really interesting seeing the hard work he put in to get back onto the field.

Liddle had a good first half - his second half was not so good, just like most of the team. Players were overrunning the PTB, which slowed it down.

TT - I don't believe you have joined the boys who give a player one game (first of the season) and want to drop him for a guy who has not played one game of NRL.

Must say I am disappointed in your thoughts on this.

I don't think Liddle had a good first half, his distribution was poor all day, for someone who was told he has the 9 jumper to lose, trained all off season as the main 9, it was very poor

Hang on 851,it was first game with a completely different team, youth, inexperience, older hardened players and they all have to get used to Madges and the WTs system...Tamou our leader was from Panthers,JTJ was from Souths D.Laurie from Panthers with half an offseason, all this combined relates to all of them gelling together to make a hard together team...
I reckon it was a great tester to see how they play together and what to expect from the top teams in 21..
For all who are screaming for Simpkin to replace Liddle have no real idea of how the NRL is played,Jake would be targetted no end because of the wraps on him and would end up in rehab or losing his confidence altogether,he is a very raw talent that will under Madges coaching and patience become a superstar of the game...he needs time to develop,Liddle has been in that situation and is now coming back strong he will do the job...
This team needs a few games to get to understand each other in the pressure of 80 mins of football, all will be right in the end and we should all have a little patience(hell we have waited this long for the success a little more aint gunna hurt)..

Really proud of him to keep persisting with numerous injuries last 5 years.

First time he played full 80 but he'll learn from this. He was quite good when backing up Harry in the few games they played together.

Looked a little slower and less fit than last year though, even at the start of the game.

Staff and players are there to win games. Who don’t win games should be sacked. Liddle has proved he loses games time after time . Period. Keep playing him at your peril Madge.
