Jacob Liddle #198

I don't think Liddle needs a minder. That is why he was rated above Cherrington. Liddle does have some size about him and is a very solid defender.

Liddle will learn off Ballin and McIllrick how to play and survive in the NRL,dont worry,he was always going to be the new RF(without the baggage)..I think we will see great things from this fellow, heres hoping…

NRL 2017: Wests Tigers captain Aaron Woods sees plenty of Robbie Farah in youngster Jacob Liddle

Dan Walsh, FOX SPORTS
January 21, 2017 6:00am

JASON Taylor has found his new Robbie Farah.

Outrageous, maybe, but we couldn’t resist.

Not when Wests Tigers skipper Aaron Woods sees so much of Farah’s famed work ethic and commitment in young hooker Jacob Liddle.

The now 20-year-old tyro who two years ago caught the train from Wyong to Concord for his first pre-season training session.

The kid who had tongues wagging with an eye-catching debut last season, who still makes the same journey from the Central Coast or Sydney’s western suburbs in to the Tigers base every day.

Liddle only got the one crack at first grade last year due to second tier salary cap constraints, when Farah, Woods and James Tedesco were away on Origin duty.

But that one outing and an impressive pre-season have been enough for Woods, who sees more than a few shades of the Tigers greatest hooker in Farah’s long term successor.

“I think (Liddle) is one of the fittest at the club,” Woods told foxsports.com.au.

“(He’s) a really good kid, he’s like a little sponge, he just listens to everything you say.

“He’s always working hard throwing left and right passes after training. He gets filthy on himself if he doesn’t throw a good ball to the halves or the forwards and he just works his backside off.

“It’s great to see a player like that and he reminds me a bit of Robbie, just his work ethic.

“Robbie’s a really, really hard worker and you just see that in Jacob. There’s no crap about him.

“He’s just a typical, hardworking bloke.

“… He’s still up there on the (Central Coast). I think he lives with his partner sometimes at St Mary’s, Penrith.

“I say to him ‘what’s the point of moving there? It’s the same trek?’ He’s a very committed kid, and one of the first ones in and the last to leave every day.

“That’s telling you something when he gets stuck in traffic and it takes him two hours to get home.

“The commitment by him is unbelievable.”

Farah’s turbulent exit from the Tigers leaves the club without one of the game’s more dominant personalities for the first time since the early 2000s.

Woods admitted last October he had no idea what the joint would be like this summer without Farah, who put as much as anyone into the club over 16 seasons and 247 games in black and gold.

Marching back into Tiger Town recently after a well-earned break following the Four Nations, Woods has been pleasantly surprised by Liddle’s rise in stature.

“I’ve only come back in the last week (to training), and when you do that you watch a couple of the kids and he’s someone that’s really taken my eye and I’ve thought ‘jeez he’s had a good pre-season’,” Woods said.

“He’s got a lot of skills as well. He’s really quick off the mark and I think he’s the quickest in the club over 30 or 40 metres with just a bit of the testing we’ve been doing.

“He’s really surprised me since I’ve come back with his talk around the boys.

“He’s slotted in, come up from 20s and did a little bit of first grade work with us (in 2016) but to see how he’s slotted into the main squad has just been outstanding.

“I really hope it’s going to be a big year for him.”

Veteran No. 9 Matt Ballin is expected to share the hooking duties with Liddle as he finds his feet at NRL level.

Ballin is almost back to full training after two seasons ruined by consecutive ACL ruptures and is targeting the Tigers’ blockbuster round one clash with South Sydney, featuring star recruit Farah, for his return.

Woods expects Taylor to pick both Liddle and the ex-Sea Eagle in his top 17, with Ballin a key figure in the youngster’s development over the season.

“You want to ease (Liddle) in,” Woods said.

“He’s a kid but he’s also playing in the middle and you want to protect him, because there’s some big bodies in there and it is a daunting task.

“You don’t see too many hookers debut at 19 and that’s what he was last year when he debuted.

“Assuming JT picks both of them; I don’t see why Matty wouldn’t play 20-25 minutes, then Jake with 15-20 or another 25 or so.

“That’s something JT will talk to him and Matty Ballin about.”

Does anyone else have the feeling we are going to have a big 5 at the end of the year? Instead of the big 4 we have currently.

I have a really good feeling about Liddle. I think he is all class.

Taylor won't be eliminating the dummy half running. In fact Ballin said as much in his press conference, and said Taylor was encouraging the boys to look for opportunities. The thing Taylor will be looking for is the decision making and timing of when they decide to run. One run instead of a pass to the halves can kill all of your momentum when you have the opposition back peddling, and we were masters of this.
Liddle is very quick and going off his highlights so far in lower grades definitely knows how to engage the marker and chose the right times to run. He will be one of my highlights in 2017.

Exactly. Taylor loves dummy halves that play direct, which Liddle does. Halatau made plenty of dummy half runs last year.

_“He’s always working hard throwing left and right passes after training. He gets filthy on himself if he doesn’t throw a good ball to the halves or the forwards and he just works his backside off._

That's music to my ears.

Seems we are set for two hooker interchanges, as many expected.

I hope Liddle has a long NRL career with the WTs,his work ethic is outstanding and it seems he has what it takes to be a top shelf 9 ….hope he keeps injury free....

Without having a go at Farah we have needed some young legs in at no9 for a few years now. The game has changed especially with the reduced interchange so you need a no 9 that can throw a wide ball in one motion both left and right to give your play maker space and protections from the monsters and you need a guy who can dash through a gap in a blink of a eye. Personally I would have liked Farah and Liddle in tandem,I think they would have been great but Ballin will also be a good no9 to play with.

If we can keep them all together we have one hell of a spine in the makings

Fair call. Looking forward to seeing Liddle develop further this year.

Only a matter of time before we realise just how much defensive work Robbie did around the ruck and how important his kicking game was for us. Looking forward to seeing our new 9 (whoever it is) bringing their flavour to our team.

Another thread being turned to the dark side. Also a matter of time before it is realised how selfish he was and how much he stifled our attack.

I don't think Tiger was turning it into a pro-Farah thread, he was just stating a fact that pretty much all supporters would admit, absolutely we will miss Farah's 50 tackles a game. In time Liddle will have the smarts and stamina to shoulder massive amounts of defence but it will all come with time and experience.
Haven't seen much of him at all apart from his FG debut vs Bulldogs but reading that article has got me pumped to see how he goes, sounds like an absolute champ of a kid with his work ethic. Go get 'em son! All the best for your first full season amongst the elite.

19 tackles in 34 minutes against the big dogs pack. No misses and more aggressive than Farah. He'll do ok.

RF looked pretty aggressive in the SOO matches in which he played. Since Liddell has not played RL at this level (at this stage), your comparison is bewildering at best.

Farah played only nine games for us last year. The players have already covered for his loss, Halatua will be the one we miss.
Halatua starting games at hooker then moving to the back row when Liddle comes on would have been ideal.

So someone can only tackle more aggressively than Farah if they have played Origin? That's crazy.

As Phil Gould said when he heard Farah had set a tackling record in origin, "Well, he mustn't be hurting them very much if they want to run at him all day." Farah's defensive effort was miraculous in a few origins, but holding on and getting pushed back 10 metres is not aggressive.

I thinkt this was his best game for us so far.

Unfortunately, doesn't offer the same as MM in defense but really made some strong one on one tackles in the line. Has great speed in attack and defense with the cover tackles esp and crisp service out of dummy half.

Hopefully he can put on some size but so far so good. Happy with his progression.
