Jacob Liddle - Farah's future replacement

Unfortunately for Mania Cherrington his timing is terrible,

Robbie I reckon will front up at the WTs for another 2-3 years, probably 3 before his powers start to wane.

Cherrington is in the unfortunate position of being his understudy, which leaves him games due to injury or SOO games.

Very hard for him to play in the lower league when he could play 1st grade elsewhere. I would imagine his manager is already looking around seeing what other possibilities there are. Already there are whispers about whether he's off.

Liddle on the other hand is younger, 1st year in U20s, 2 years there, 1 year a grade higher and then he's ready to step into Robbie's shoes.

He has been very impressive in his games sofar. 3 years of adding size, muscle and guile will stand him in very good stead to be johnny on the spot right when Robbie's due to call time
 
I realise I will probably be in the minority, but from what I have seen of both (albeit I have only seen very little of Liddle) I rate Cherrington higher.
 
Farah still has another 3-4 yrs left, that's too far away to plan for a replacement. In 2000, no one had any clue of Robbie Farah and Benji Marshall who debuted in 03\. You never know who is going to pop up out of nowhere.

In my opinion farah will get the tap on the shoulder well before then.

Don't know whether your theory allows for injury. If Robbie gets injured, particularly if it is a serious injury, then Cherrington could get a call up for the rest of the season.

Hard to plan what is going to 4 years ahead when anything can happen 4 weeks ahead. We have depth in both juniors which is great. JT seems to be able to get the best out of players, looking at the improvement in Sue and Sirro, so as GNR said anything can happen.

If Lawrence hasn't been tapped in the Shoulder by now ? neither will Farah.
 
I reckon Robbie will get a final contract at the summation of the 2017 season when his current one expires. Maybe something like $350,000 per year for 2 more years. That is all things being equal of course.

Hopefully he can captain this great club to a premiership in the time he has left with us.
 
Unless Farah suddenly turns into josh mccrone, I think we owe it to him to let him go on his terms.

I don't think Farah is going anywhere soon,however they need to lock one of these future stars into a contract if they think anything of them,otherwise we could be in the position later on of having to scout around and buy a hooker…..

Can't see the sense in that if we have little money to pursue likely prospects....and we let talent slip through our fingers because of one person who could "get injured" .... :smiley:
 
Surely Cherrington needs to be part of our plan moving forward. He is the same generation as our superstars and we need to make sure we keep these guys together even if it means short-term pain, and we need to sacrifice some other talent who won't be around when our 'golden generation' is peaking.

This means reduced money for players like Galloway, Robbie, Patty, Halatau etc.

If the guy is fair dinkum he will want to be around when our team matures. If he wants to chase the dollar too early then so be it…rugby league is littered with big money flops. The feeling I get is these guys are learning so much under JT and the club is finally moving confidently forward we will keep anyone we want to.

Many of us were talking about Farah for two years before he played firsts.

I have the opposite view. If in two years we do not have a side contending, we should look at moving Farah on to ensure either of Liddle or Mania ia retained.

I rate Mania very highly. His decision making is up there with Cam Smith at a similar age.

Havent seen enough of Liddle but I wonder whether people are getting carries away with hi s dummy half running. Thats never been a priority in a hooker for me. I value decision making over the odd scurry. Particularly has NRL defense these days has nullified the ability to make huge metres from dummy half.

Funnily, I always rated Farah's dummy half running behind Stuey Flannagan and Robbie Mears. It was just that he was a far better footballer in all other facets.

I agree. Farah ain't got 3-4 yrs left and we need to start grooming a replacement this year. That's unless you want to go to the market and take a punt on an unproven player Like Lichea (@$400k apparently).

Look at the teams that have let their hookers go without a viable backup….North QLD spent 3-4yrs in the wilderness after losing their hooker to the Warriors? and then wasted a few years after losing Segyaro to Penrith.

Gold Coast losing Nathan friend was the beginning of the end for them.

Last thing we want to be doing is chasing a replacement for Farah when Moses and Brooks hit their straps in 2-3 years time. Its so hard to replace key parts of the spine.....it has taken us 10yrs to find a viable replacement for Prince (this ultimately cost Sheens his job).
 
I wouldn't mind betting Cherrington gets a bench spot in a rotation with Farah in the near future, Taylor has already shown his hand with taking Farah off at the back end of the first half in games. IMO if you want to keep and blood Cherrington Halatau's bench spot is better served with Cherrington, also might give us another different dimension in attack if things aren't working out with Robbie.
 
Farah will be playing less minutes as the years roll on,so Iam sure Cherrington will get plenty of game time,but probably from 2016 onwards. The only problem is, will this satisfy him or will he want more NRL time sooner.The club has made it clear, that anyone who wants out can go
 
Supercoach - I think what the club are saying is "anyone we DON'T want, can go."

I'd be very surprised if they don't want Mania - who wants someone to build up a bit at the expense of not playing, if you don't want them.

The thing is, they need to (and probably already have), say to him you are part of our go forward plans for many years - you need to get stronger, learn and hone your craft and we will look after you. You are Robbie's replacement in our eyes and over the next few years we will be giving you as much NRL game time as we can.

Now with Liddle - he has much more time, Maybe he will be good, maybe he won't.
I wouldn't be signing him long term and letting Mania go. All Liddle is at the moment is a maybe.

Take the good one you have first and for most. The second one, let him stay if he wants to learn and go through the process but not at the expense of someone who has proven himself so far to be Robbie's replacement.

Cherrington is a really, really good player. He has NRL written all over him.

Liddle is showing lots of talent, but will have to do alot more before he jumps him in the pecking order.

I fell in love with Cherrington the first time he saw him as a player and nothing has changed my opinion.
 
Robbie is starting to slow but age is catching up with him, need to lock in the youngsters who will be the next Robbie before other clubs snare them
 
Robbie is already starting to look slow and his decision making has been off this season, but his defence is still rock solid. He'll still be our starting hooker for this season and next barring injury or suspension.

How many 20 year old hookers are there in the NRL these days? Lichaa is 21 and he's probably the youngest. I think he's realistic that he's only ever played about a few hundred minutes against men in his career thus far. He's got to continue to work on his fitness, defence and his decision making while playing at a higher level than the u20s. It's a big step up afterall. Even just to NSW Cup.

Cherrington is full of talent and will play NRL soon enough. No point rushing him and getting injured.

Liddle seems to ve a very good young hooker too. At this stage it's his running game which makes him stand out, but this is only after a few games. Let's see how he progresses. Considering he wasn't one from our catchment area/junior clubs and decided to join us he must see us as a good club to develop his skills at.
