Jahream Bula #269

Thats a very good price for a spine player who was playing with not much in front of him and a rookie.
Give him some decent halves and more game time and this will end up been a steal IMO.

The kid has class writing all over him but just like a Walsh or Edwards he WILL have errors and mistakes, but he will develop and only get better. It's not paying overs IMO

Is that a statement or a question - If it's a question - What's the question?
Bula has played a dozen games!!
He's done nothing compared to the blokes you mentioned...
In life - You pay after the value is set - not before.

He's played well, Showed potential,
But he's getting paid more than Dylan Edwards, Harry Grant and plenty of others....

he has already played better then both of them did this year … and in 4 years he will still be getting paid less money …

I like this deal a hell of a lot more than I like those two

I'll bet you anything as soon as 700k in considered cheap for him (If ever) His manager will be shopping him...
Weather to us for an upgrade - Or elsewhere....

It will be 18 months before he'll get close to earning that money.

You are right. It's a win-win for the player. If he performs above his pay grade he asks for more. If he performs below his pay grade the club sucks it up.

If he outperforms his deal, He can ask for more … they don’t have to pay it… but they might choose too… wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world ..

Guys... the NRL cap raised 20% from 2022 to 23, and now I believe it's another 25% in 2024. So, if you're talking $750k, it's equivalent to about $450k 2 years ago.

Everyone still notionally benchmarks in their head against the mythical $1m mark. That should now be about $1.4m.

I would expect Api to be on around $900k - $1m.

If Bula is indeed $750k, that should be about right. Hopefully, they brought forward our underspend this year on his contract.

I wonder who provides better value next year. Bula, Stef, Bateman or Klemmer ? My pick is Bula.

Both Klemmer and Bateman look overpaid based on what we saw this year, particularly as the season wore on…

I see they both turn 30 this off-season so things are looking a bit grim that we will see value for money in what’s left of their deals …

Hope I am wrong

You can't just look at their on-field contribution. They are instilling the culture in the younger guys. Benji always talks about the impact the senior guys had on him early on. Ben Galea and O'Neil.

We've got 3 guys, in Api Bateman and Klemmer, who always give 100% on the field and are fierce competitors. We've got the right guys.

Love Api… he is head and shoulders above the other 2

They had to secure him it's as simple as that
You can argue all day long about his value and lucky to get two people who will agree. You can take the negative view or look at the positive- all signatures come with risk.

If you can’t be optimistic about this news then I don’t think it’s possible to be optimistic about anything Wests Tigers related …. If he hadn’t have wanted to extend so he could ”test the market” then that would have been a disaster ..

Apples for apples....
If the best Fullbacks in the game are on a mill, 700k is too much for one who's played a dozen games.

He may well be one day - But right here, right now - He's got a long way to go to be considered amongst the games top fullbacks.
But they won't be on a mil mate. It will be more.

Do you think DCE would have signed that long-term contract without a provision to have his salary move with the changes in the cap? No way.

The media commentators always latch onto this $1m figure. They haven't moved with the times.

Pay on Potential
- It's the Wests Tigers way....

What’s the alternative if we don’t?

Their is zero chance an established fullback comes our way. Let alone for that price.

If Bula continues his progress rate then that figure could be well unders and very astute business.

If Bula has limited improvement then we are probably on par for his salary over the next few years as all other players in key positions get refreshments contracts.

I don’t actually see it as a negative especially at his age.

Twal is on 500k and yet you've got some on here complaining about one of the best young kids this club has ever seen who just took out all our individual awards in his first season and is a spine player earning 100-150k more than that. I'm fairly certain this will turn out a good deal for us

Moses just signed a 5 yr - 1.25 deal...
It won't be that much more....
All clubs are trying their best to avoid ratchet clauses....
Pretty sure DCE was fixed at a mil, So was Taumalolo.

They got paid big early, So that by the time it got to the end of the deal it's about right...
Funny thing is DCE got better, and Taumalolo got worse.

He signed 1.25 plus significant 3rd party deals which limits what they can offer cap/3rd party wise to other players.

It's overs right now but it's a good bet. Let's see if we are right.
