Jahream Bula #269

Age 28, 17 NRL games 1.7m tall

I’d rather the tall athletic 23yo we have whose been a consistent player who will go onto play 250 plus NRL games.
24 years old.

I'm not trying to be snotty, but what was the last game that Bula was truly the best player on the pitch? Honestly. What is that famous Bula game?

I hope he gets asked the tough questions
What tough questions are you expecting? You think he’s gonna get grilled? 😅

He might get asked, but it will be the standard “I’m concentrating on my footy. I let my manager take care of all that”. Which is usually an indirect way of saying you’re gone. His teammate isn’t going to pressure him. May knows the game, knows that it could easily be him one day. Maybe one day soon, given the way the club pulled their contract offer. The interview will be a bro fest. Nothing more.

May is already hinting himself he might not be around much longer … made a joke about it on the KPP interview anyway… might just be a ploy for more money I guess…

He probably is serious. You’d be pissed too if you were just starting to negotiate a new contract, than a new CEO came in and took it off the table. I think he’s a bigger chance of staying than Bula is, but he could easily leave too. The club have so many off contract at the end of next year, I don’t even know where they begin. As beloved as Richo was and still is around these parts, he did a terrible job at not staggering all of these contracts.

In his defence,
The 2 May brothers didn't give him the option.

They managed their contract length based on the other brother in the UK.

I actually believe Latu has the potential to deliver at a level very close to Katoa....maybe not the same ceiling though, on this trajectory Katoa will be very close to a GOAT by the time he hangs up the boots.
Latu is a much stronger and more dangerous ball runner than Katoa.
Katoa at the moment has Latu well covered for structured halfback playing, deception and kicking game.
Very different players, only similarity is their Tongan heritage.

Dont think Latu can throw the pass Katoa did on the weekend. He is such an elite playmaking talent. Latu can be elite too, just in different ways.

He is & is going to be a good player. I'm just saying hyping him up as the saviour in a position he's never played is a bit odd.
I don’t think he’d be a saviour, but I think he’s a better footballer than Bula, and I think he’d make a good fullback. He filled in there in Vegas when Drinkwater went off and he looked sharp as hell. He’s a guy that needs the ball in his hand. He’s wasted a bit in the centres.

I will try and make it easier to understand.
As some of our forum members have quite rightly pointed out, we are absolutely no chance of signing one of the already proven elite fullbacks in the NRL such as Reece Walsh, Kalyn Ponga, Tom Trobojevic, Dylan Edwards, James Tedesco etc anytime soon.
That being the case we are searching for the next elite fullback IF we do not re-sign Jahream Bula.
It is fairly common knowledge that the 2 young emerging players that are destined to be superstar fullbacks, providing they do not play 5/8 are Fletcher Sharpe and Jaxon Purdue.
Surely people are not still asking why Purdue would be an elite fullback ? He is tall, lightning fast off the mark and over a long distance, has very good deception in his running game and passing game, has already demonstrated a decent kicking game, safe under the high ball, a genuine threat when chasing an attacking high ball and is a solid defender. Ticks all the boxes that you are looking for in an elite fullback as does Fletcher Sharpe.
When you consider we are already offering Jahream somewhere around 900k to 950k per season and he has not yet accepted it, we would be plain crazy not to offer an emerging superstar the same, if not more.
My information is we are looking at other players as a contingency plan in case Jahream does not re-sign with us which is just basic common sense really, but I have no information as to exactly which players we are looking at.

People keep stating we are offering Bula close to a million like it is fact (it seems to go up by the day). How would anyone actually know?

I don't think that game exists.

Was excited to see his debut vs Manly at Cambo and thought Sheens may actually be right about this kid, but gee as far as I'm concerned it was just false hope.

Was so impressed with his defence in those early games and thought if this kid can work on his offence surely he is going to be a star, but that did not happen and to make matters worse his defence has turned to crap.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, either we have no idea how to develop a player, and you would think he could pick up a few pointers off Hodgo, or he is just a slow learner.

I don’t profess to know exact figures, but I was told we have made him an extremely high offer for 2 years, or a lesser offer for 4-5 years.
This same information was pretty much stated by Shaun Mielekamp possibly on the ClawsOut Podcast about in a month or so back ?
Based on the fact Bula himself can activate an extension for 2027 at 800k or we can activate his extension for 2027 at 900k, you would assume an extremely high figure would be no less than 900k ?

I see we are advertising for a General Manager of Football, may as well put up an advertisement for a full back as well and see if anyone applies. 🤣
