Jahream Bula #269

No Wests Tigers player in history has ever changed my mind as often as much as Bula. mayyyyybe early Luke Brooks. But yeah, Bula can look world class and terrible quick as a flash. And he's no schoolkid. He's custard and mustard. He's actually started chiming in to backline play a lot lately, really well, and that's what everyone here was whinging about last season.

He'll keep getting better but he's not a class apart from Kaeo Weeks or Jye Gray. Although yeah, Richo said it best the other day when he said he was the new David Peachey. Like he's legit but not someone you base your whole roster around like Ponga. It would really unbalance our side and prospects to pay overs for him, but would be brilliant at the correct price.

Another poor performance.
He would be the only player in the team that's been bested by his opposite number regularly this year.
If we had Kaeo Weekes last night we win by another 2 tries.
Bula just never creates his own opportunities.

I kinda get what you are both saying and yeah, I would like Bula to stay but not on some creamy over priced contract.

Yes he is getting better in some areas, probably fallen off in some others, but when you look at most first string full backs in the NRL you see kick returns and line breaks almost guaranteed a couple of times a game, not sure if I ever see that with Bula.

I have no doubt that he has some injury issues at the moment but he has been pretty timid and appears to be afraid of contact and it seems to have been that way for a fairly long while now.

I understand that Bula would be thinking about starting a family and thinking about long term financial security but he needs to be very careful about making some sort of a contract decision soon because he may have that injury or require that surgery that puts him out of the game for a long time or even indefinitely and it could quite easily bring to an end his long term financial security

Bula is a very good fullback. Not elite, but in that second category and getting better. His initial problem was how weak he was in contact and his passivity in attack. We see him push through tackles a lot more these days and I think he's still going to get quite a bit stronger in the next year or two.

Despite getting stronger he's still very fast and he is highly involved and confident in his play around the ball. In the last year I think we've seen him become much more assertive and decisive in his play. Whenever he sweeps out wide we look very dangerous, so just imagine him as he continues to get stronger with those movements.

And then you just look at his skills already: speed, hands, awareness, size, fitness.

There are a lot of good fullbacks so it maybe makes us complacent when we have a good one. But considering the available options and how they compare to Bula and I don't see anything better and I'm really keen to see how he progresses given his great strides in the past 12 months.

I think he's underappreciated on here. As for contract size, you don't want to pay too much, but none of us really knows what that price actually is. The key thing to consider is how valuable he is to our team and, alternatively, who you think could potentially upgrade that position. I don't see many out there doing that.

Brain fart from Doueihi but he's the one who took the risk in the first place to run it on last tackle so can't be too mad at him.
Sides will be all doing there homework on AD. His one out running is getting predictable and over done. Dont get me wrong there is plenty to like about his game, I just think the backline lacks shape and a strategy, it’s one out or sideways runs

You could also say if our attack was the finished product we will get found out by the opposition and fade at the back end of the year, i don't mind if it evolves and changes throughout the season, as long as it continues to improve and there is significant room for improvement..

Id pay the 1 year option...which buys us some time to identify his replacement plus work out where Luai is going if anywhere..no-one will match his $1.2 mill
Just cant have two million $ plus players who underperform to that salary

I am really hoping that we see luai find his feet toward the back end of the season and we really make a run of it. With Douhei and Luai both firing in their best form, anything is possible.

If Bulla is so good why have the dragons gone after Drinky , I’m hearing the, offer is 3 years and around 1 mill , does this mean Bulla is wanting more money or had agreed to extension with Tigers or Dogs doing dogs stuff in background to grab him later this year

I find it so frustrating that players catch and put the ball under their arm immediately! Both Adam and Royce did this when in space. It denies them the opportunity to draw and pass. I suspect Benji dislikes it as well, with his comment in the press conference re Royce should have drawn and passed

We currently have no option other than to pay him 900k as there is nobody better available and it would upset the team bond if he was to head elsewhere.
The questions are is he going to be happy with 900k, is he going to be happy if we initially only take up our option for 2027 and not extend him any further ?
Not forgetting that if one player is getting very highly paid, all our other high profile players coming off contract over the next couple of years will also expect top dollar and we may not be able to fit them all in our salary cap if giving them all the too dollar value they would like.
Why do you think it’s expensive ?

Drinkwater got more

that’s the fullback market

Because I would expect any player getting paid 900k or more to get their fair share of man of the match performances each season.
Drinkwater is very hot and cold , no doubt he has some very poor games, but he does generally have his fair share of match winning man of the match performances each season.
Based on that fact alone I can’t put Bula in the same class as Drinkwater.
In saying this I thought Jahream was very good for us in the 2nd half on Thursday night, some of his backline involvements and ball playing to create was as good as I’ve seen from him, so it at least shows he is working hard on some of the areas he has previously struggled with and if he continues to improve or simply play like he did in the 2nd half until he got injured, a contract figure of 900k might become reasonable.
We don’t even know if Jahream is happy with 900k, he via his manager could be asking for more for all we know ?
With Terrell and Samuela both likely to be looking for pay rises if they agree to extend their contracts with us, we have to be very mindful of not over paying players if we expect to keep the majority of this current team together.

I heard Shane Flanagan is managed by Isaac Moses. When Flanagan got sacked the Dragon’s out of the Bulla recruiting

I can only see him going to PNG if he leaves. And idk whose gonna wanna go there
Me neither, I don't know what his problem is, the interest closer to home one is a basket case and the other looks to be in reverse, unrest simmering away amongst the supporters is a bad sign.

On the flipside surely he can see things are changing for the better at Concord unless all he's worried about is dollars.
