OFFICIAL Jahream Bula #269

There's a real million dollar fullback running around for Melbourne tonight doing things Bula could only dream about.
And it hasn't taken him 4 years to be mediocre in the faint hope that he might do something one day in the future.
Jesus he is great with the ball in his hand but not when he passes and not when he has to tackle anyone .. paps is a million dollar Fullback ,, he is the reason their attack ain’t so slick this year, meaning paps absence , not sua causing it

If you asked me about losing Bula 2-3 years ago when he burst onto the scene, I'd have been very disappointed, but I just don't think he's added to his game a great deal as a fullback. Obviously his speed will always be a strength, but he doesn't quite use it in his running game like a Hammer or Weekes does. Under the high ball he's good, both in attack and defence. Does an OK job defensively. Hasn't really come on as a link man and ball-player as much as I would've liked.

Realistically where does hit sit out of the game's fullbacks? He'd barely be in the top 10.

I understand the risk of losing a player who is pretty good when you don't have a certain replacement lined up, but there's also a risk associated with overpaying an incumbent out of that fear too.

If Bula was showing consistent signs of improvement, I'd be more inclined to keep him. But there just hasn't been much more than incremental improvement and a reliance on his athleticism. While I'd stop short of calling him injury prone, he tends to pick up a few niggles every year which adds to my concern as the build-up of those over time can very quickly take away a player's athletic edge.

If he wants to come to the table and stay on a team-friendly deal in-line with market, great. If he wants to try and leverage PNG or a rival to get something that the star fullbacks should be on, I'm happy to let him go.

They've got him sitting at #7

Yeah off the top of my head I'd have him around 8th or 9th.

Bula's better than Kennedy and I'd take him over the corpse of Trbojevic, but Walsh and Ponga are both better and Edwards is too despite the rating. Think you can make an argument for Weekes too.

Weekes is unreal.
Amazing to watch.

For mine , i think if Bula really wants to stay he should grow
a pair and tell his manager to get a deal done or else.
This. It always amazes me how many players are led by their managers and not the other way around.

If he wants to stay he should be directing Moses to get a deal done. You’d think grown men would want more say and influence over decisions that affect their career and livelihoods.

If its png then the stand off makes sense.

Why would the tigers activate his clause and pay him 900k for a season if hes going to leave the following year.

So if the tigers dont activate, it means bula has to activate on the lesser amount.

if neither club activates and PNG is the preferred option, it means he is without a club for 2027... enter Perth bears who will probably pay overs.

If he wants to move around that and its all about money, then i guess we need to weigh up if he is worth 900k to us in 2027 or whether we can find a suitable replacement in time.

I would think the injury only helps the tigers position.

TLDR - have nfi

It’s a power dynamic. Managers have the connections, the experience, the information, runs on the board, the agendas, the promises.

Good post.
But you also take two positions.

You say that if he stayed on a team-friendly deal, great, while at the same time you suggest you wouldn’t be inclined to keep him anyway considering his lack of improvement.
Seems contradictory.
How do you reconcile that?
