Yes I could've been clearer, but what I mean is I'm inclined to let him go if he's asking for too much because his lack of improvement suggests it's less likely he'll improve enough to a point where the price tag is justified.Good post.
But you also take two positions.
You say that if he stayed on a team-friendly deal, great, while at the same time you suggest you wouldn’t be inclined to keep him anyway considering his lack of improvement.
Seems contradictory.
How do you reconcile that?
If instead I thought he were showing consistent signs of improvement and was adding to his game, then I could live with overpaying him based on his current ability/value because there'd be a chance he'd grow to meet/exceed the contract.
If we get him at a fair price, then his improvement is a bonus rather than something we've paid and are hoping for.
